  • Choreographer Carlos Acosta, Cast Christopher Saunders, Philip Mosley, Alexander Campbell and Akane Takada, and Conductor Martin Yates discuss their experience of rehearsing and performing Don Quixote. Find out more www.roh.org.uk/productions/do...
Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa's much-loved 19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus's score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding 'vision scene' and the famously bravura and breath-taking Act III pas de deux.
Carlos Acosta's production was created for The Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company to the stage. Acosta created new choreography for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of Tim Hatley's vibrant designs.

I love that this ballet makes the dancers seem to play on the stage rather than dancing and performing for the audience.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!!! Please can this production with this cast be released on DVD too? The cinemas in my country don't have screenings of the Royal Ballet. I'll sure be one of the first to buy it ;)

I saw Carlos Acosta's Don Q in Covent Garden 4-5 years ago, with Iana Salenko and Steven McRae in the lead. It was the best. No other production could ever come close! Would love to be able to see all the casts but alas I live so far away... Hoping to catch a show if I'm ever in London again!

Saw Bolshoi London Summer 2007 I think.
A very young Osipova was 5th principal or something like that. ENO on the spur of the moment decision. Friend's birthday, we celebrated on a whim, having coffee outside by St. Martin's in the Fields.
I saw the advert and went in to buy tickets.
It was hugely imaginative and Pancho, gypsies were incredible dancers the whole production was a Saturday afternoon matinee of the highest standard/ quality dancing
Seen Bolshoi 3 x but this was best production ever.

There are a few comments about how Akane Takada is "not Kitri". I don't agree: Takada just gives a different reading of the character and brings her personal emphasis to the story. After all, she is in a serious, even desperate situation: she may be forced to marry a rich but idiotic man, sealing her fate forever in conservative Spain. So she has to run off with Basilio - something well brought-up girls did not do at the time and which could have led to her being ostracised from the family and village. Kitri does not necessarily have to be a playful, coquettish, always smiling girl. Actually, Takada plays her more as a woman who definitely has a serious side to her; she is deeply in love with Basilio and chooses him over what society thinks. I think Takeda and Campbell are very well matched on stage and give a wonderful performance.

Thank goodness its not Osipova at last RB giving others a chance to shine !!! Dancers can only gain experience in acting technique etc if given the chance Otherwise we are going back to the time when only Fonteyn Nureyev appeared and all the other up coming dancers were passed over Wall Dowell Seymour Park all suffered under that regime Took many years for them to make their mark Some were too old or went to other companies.

Helen Wang I disagree about RB not giving Osipova many chances, her joining the RB was huge and highly publicised. You can scroll back to see videos posted by this channel before 2018, a large number of them had Osipova in them. RB was trying to milk her fame for all it was worth

I have written a separate comment, talking about what a few people think about Akane Takeda's portrayal of Kitri. I believe that this exquisite ballerina gives an authentic reading of the character.
