I was at this game. The sub-text was the Red Wings would have won the Norris with a win, a year after finishing last in the league with 40 points. The broadcast doesn't do justice to the emotion in the building.

It’s not his fault Carson was attempting a one timer…and was bending his knees thus leaving his head as the primary collision point.
Bobby taylor former goalie.....a lot of the old timers sounded like that there were no nat televised games back then.....the few times i heard other teams playcallers back then the sounded funny to me for the same reason. The nhl was a different world back in those days.
So true! Probie was always gettin blasted by Berube, but wrecked pretty much everyone else! I think maybe it was bc Joey Kocur had quicker hands, less of a “wind up”, and was a tad smaller but stronger imo

@@jason-hy8ci oh yeah, the Byers loss was a nasty beating. Berube needed stitches inside his mouth and tongue. He also caught influenza while recovering and lost a bunch of weight. Keenan sent him to the AHL for conditioning after that, but he eventually returned to the NHL. One of his very first fights upon returning was a draw with Byers.
The Philly announcers needed to settle down a bit. Any time there was a scrum or just some pushing and shoving, they were whining excessively and calling for “third man in” game misconducts on the Wings.
Greg Stefan got one. Gene Hart did settle down though. He settled about six feet down in 1999. This was a tight game with the Flyers being one of the best in the league that year and the Wings being a top team too. Add in that they had played a few weeks earlier and had a rough game.
80’s hockey’s way better. better flow to the game and more scoring because the goaltenders are wearing normal sized pads ffs. Not the crazy oversized body armor and extra wide leg pads you see today. It’s so glaring. goalie scouts in 2024: “get me a 6 foot 5 in or above Russian, Swede or Canadian that we can just plop between dem pipes & occasionally go down into butterfly…” for offensive sharpshooters to score consistently-they legit gotta fire the puck into an opening the size of mail slot ffs ! lol thank for coming to my ted talk. rant ova. be well.

Berube was a call up that year and was wearing #34 that season mostly. He switched to #17.
