한 달 반 만에 VIXX 2016 CONCEPTION 마지막 이야기 [Kratos]로 돌아왔다.
2016년 한 해 동안 빅스가 선보인 VIXX 2016 CONCEPTION ‘케르’는 총 3부작으로 이어지는 대형 연간 프로젝트로, ‘운명’과 ‘파멸’이라는 키워드를 통해 장대하고 다양한 스토리를 풀어냈다. 케르 프로젝트 중 가장 마지막 앨범이지만 전체 스토리상으론 시작에 해당하는 [Kratos]는 ‘힘과 권력의 신, 크라토스’를 모티브로 하였다. 절대적 권력 위치인 켄의 모습과 파티에서 만난 여자를 두고 펼쳐지는 엔과 레오의 대립구도 등 은밀한 거래와, 서로 잡고 잡히는 혼란스러운 관계를 가면이라는 아이템으로 비밀스럽게 포장하였다. 그리고 이러한 가면을 직접적인 표현 보다는, 레이스 안대를 통해 빅스만의 은밀한 섹시함으로 표현하였다.
타이틀곡 'The Closer’는 지난 [Hades] 앨범의 타이틀곡 ‘Fantasy’를 작업한 작곡가 임광욱, Ryan Kim을 필두로 한 프로듀싱팀 디바인-채널(Devine-Channel)과 다시 한번 호흡을 맞춰 탄생된 곡이다. 'The Closer'는 세련된 일렉 신스의 테마로 시작되는 도입부분이 인상적인 화려하고 센시티브한 멜로디의 곡이다. 후렴구의 세련된 멜로디는 사랑과 힘을 노래하는 여섯 남자의 화려한 모습을 가면이라는 아이템과 함께 트렌디하면서도 섹시한 분위기로 표현하였다. 빅스는 이번 타이틀 곡으로 1년간의 프로젝트의 대단원을 장식하는 만큼 또 다른 명작의 탄생을 보여주고 있다.
이번 앨범의 컨셉인 ‘힘과 권력의 신’ 크라토스에 맞춰 비주얼에서도 기존 빅스가 선보였던 수트 스타일링에서 한층 더 업그레이드 된 클래식 수트와 판타지 컨셉의 종지부 제복 컨셉을 통해 그동안 빅스가 보여준 비주얼 판타지를 또 한 번 실현하였다. 크라토스 컨셉을 가장 잘 표현할 포인트인 제복 수트와 화려한 골드 견장 액서세리, 짧은 헤어 스타일 변신 등을 통해 빅스만의 피지컬을 더욱 돋보이게 하고, 강인하면서도 세련된 빅스만의 남성미를 강조하였다.
타이틀 곡 ‘The Closer’의 안무는 빅스의 성숙한 섹시함과 제복의 남성미를 강조하기 위해 트렌디한 힙합 안무가 Willdabeast (윌다비스트)와 지난 [Hades] 앨범 시 ‘Love Me Do’ 안무로 많은 사랑을 받았던 최영준 안무가의 협업으로 탄생되었다. 매 앨범마다 다른 스타일의 안무로 계속해서 변화를 선보이며 1년 프로젝트이지만 각각의 앨범으로서도 완성도를 높이고 있다.
이번 앨범 뮤직비디오는 독특한 아이디어와 색감으로 주목받고 있는 신희원 감독과 작업하게 되었다.
[Zelos]에서는 레오의 언약식을 훼방 놓는 스토리가, [Hades]에서는 사랑하는 그녀의 마음을 얻고자 사랑의 묘약을 만들기 위해 암흑세계로 찾아갔던 스토리에 이어, 1년간의 ‘케르 프로젝트’ 스토리 중 첫 시작이 되는 이번 [Kratos]에서는 그동안의 꼬여 있던 실타래가 풀리게 된다.
마치 시공간이 멈춘 듯한 상태를 통해 하나의 상황과 하나의 시선으로 시간의 순서를 조정해 가며 같은 상황속의 다른 움직임들을 관찰한다. 켄이 ‘제우스’로서 만들어 놓은 이 모든 상황들을 그의 시선으로 관조하는 듯한 연출을 통해 그동안 빅스가 시도해 보지 않았던 새로운 뮤직비디오로 완성되었다.
레오와 엔이 한 여자의 마음을 빼앗기 위해 대립을 벌이는 과정과, 그들을 도와주면서도 방해하는 라비, 홍빈, 혁의 모습까지, 그들의 은밀한 관계도도 함께 엿볼 수 있다.

‘신화’라는 새로운 모티브를 바탕으로 한 세계관으로 1년을 관통하는 프로젝트를 선보인 빅스. 그리고 드디어 장대한 프로젝트의 대단원의 막이 내렸다.
2016년은 빅스에게 있어 새로운 시도와 도전을 하는 한 해였고, 한 층 더 업그레이드된 모습을 보여주기에 충분했다. 그리고 다가올 2017년, 빅스는 또 어떤 새로운 컨셉으로 대중들에게 신선한 충격을 줄 지 기대해도 좋을 것이다.

Don't think of these babies as underrated just because their MVs have low number of views. They topped every music shows every comeback since voodoo doll. They also won awards which you guys should be proud of. These January they won 2 Bonsang awards and that is amazing. They are recognized as matchless concept-dols because there's no concept that they can't pull off. They work hard and always thank us every now and then. And that made me their Starlight. I admit sometimes I get sad because of the comments saying they are unappreciated and think how do they feel if they read those. Let's not be like that and be happy for them and pray for their health, their careers, and hopefully no mistreatment whatsoever.
Let's keep the fandom alive and bright! Let's do our part as well like be responsible with our behavior, streaming, voting, purchasing (I mean no to piracy as it affects them as well) and most especially, NO COMPARING. These leads to fight among fandoms, ah the drama, no please. To US, they're the best. We don't need to explain how awesome these giants are. I know sometimes we might be pissed when someone insults our boys but let's be mindful of our words. Let's give them lots of love love love and stay 'til they no longer take it like Njumma does to his babies.
Love your comment! I know comparing is bad, but I think everyone at least subconsciously does it. And it's hard not to, when you see other groups being more successful. It's not that they do not deserve it (I'd be the last person to start a fanwar, and all idols are working hard!), but it keeps reminding me of how VIXX could still be getting more attention. I know that they are highly respected, esp. by their colleagues, and that always makes me feel warm inside. VIXX clearly is no group for which fans need to worry if they can even continue. They have a stable fandom, stable quality and always stand out. And yes, they keep winning, but there's no way to deny that they have seen better times as well, with The Closer getting only one win at music shows.
But you're right, I also don't want neither VIXX nor Starlights to feel bad because of any of this, since VIXX keep doing a great job, are always kind and thankful and Starlights try to pay them back as best as we can. I, personally, am mostly happy that I got to know VIXX, I enjoy their music, their shows etc etc. But sometimes you might read this "they are so underrated" comment by me, too, which is not at all meant to make them feel bad, on the contrary. It's an occasional, and usually very emotional of communicating that I cannot believe that not everyone (at least every KPopper ^^) loves this group as much as I do. So yes, let's be mindful of our words, but I don't think that wishing these guys only the very best would hurt anyone. Let's just stay by their side (at least virtually ^^) and give love, as you said.

I would be stupid if I say I'm not comparing at times, but I just keep it to myself, because I believe everyone knows idols really work hard as you said to be in their best every time. That's what I mean that if we say something or kind of defend them, let's be mindful of our words. And yes, sometimes I say they should be recognized more because they're awesome. I sometimes feel they are unappreciated, but I always look at the bright side as much as possible. Hope these babies do too. And reading your wonderful opinion made me realize that we should be more determined in whatever we do, which I believe these boys are striving for.

I know this didn't connect with general audiences much, and most Starlights didn't love the song either, but The Closer has been my favorite K-Pop song ever since its release. There's just something weirdly captivating about it.
And I think it's interesting that, despite the lack of attention this song got at the time, this is the direction they stuck with. Both Shangri-la and Scentist went for a similiar music style as The Closer, even though Fantasy and Dynamite especially were bigger hits and the entire Conception era as a whole didn't have the same amount of success previous comebacks had. Shows that they found something they wanted to do, and rather than following trends, Jellyfish decided to stick with what would be the most interesting music to work on. I can't say that I understand the decision from a buisness standpoint, but I am glad that they were able to do this. Because in my opinion, their music quality, which was always good for K-Pop, took a giant step up with Conception.
That's what makes them special, they're unique and not afraid to try different things.
One of the reasons why it didn't get that much wins is that k-starlights have a boycott because Jellyfish forgot to credit Hakyeon for his choreography in Desperate. It was a good song to finish the trilogy.

the vocal melodies in the pre-chorus combined with the elongated beat that starts off the chorus and the way it seems to go up just to suddenly drop you and then pick you up again. it's very captivating because it plays with your emotions.

The quality of VIXX's MUSIC is just High level! Their music is full of theatricality, i think they have the best among all kpop groups! Plus their concept is just alway on point. They aren't called Concept Kings for no reason. They own that title completely. It's just a shame that not everybody prefer their music.

I literally don't understand kpop fans. I've been a fan since 2005, I'm 24 now. I've listened to literally any group that's come out. First groups i stanned were tvxq and suju. This is PURE talent. I get jellyfish isn't a huge company but I still have always favored talent over looks and whatever bullshit these kids are lookin at. I cannot believe the low views on their content. I guess since I'm their age I relate more but it's just crazy to me how people can bypass raw talent for a cute face or little dance. Don't get me wrong when exo came out I was all over that but when you get older(especially if you're into music in general. Like theory and composition) you realize talent when you see it. Not to say exo doesn't have talent but realistically it goes to show you it's who you know that determines how successful you are in entertainment and that's just the truth. Again no hate to EXO , just using them as an example because I was SO into them but look at beast and btob and other groups that don't get the recognition they deserve. They aren't in the big 3. What a shame guys. Kens voice is immaculate . The pure raw vocal taken he posses is crazy. Leo same thing, to have such a high range for a male. Amazing. You keep on saying that you’re not hating on EXO but everything you said indirectly discredit them. I have only been into Kpop for 4 years but my first group was 2PM and Miss A which meant the only shows I watched were of them with older groups which opened up my heart for older groups. I'm mostly a second generation stan. But I disagree on you placing Exo as a example. They are a very talented group that works hard. The Closer: Ken and Ravi team up to mess with Leo and N for fun. They hold a party to gather their victims (the part where they all are gathered in the party). N and Leo are rivals, you see, as they both are in love with the same girl. Only this girl genuinely loves N (reaching out for him when he fell). Out of jealousy Leo makes a deal with Hades: to make a love potion so that she falls in love with him. In exchange Leo is cursed with the Evil Eye!!! In order to make the potion Ravi takes the girl and uses her as an ingredient for the potion (Ravi held her by his side). After this is done Leo steals her away (sprinting with the girl). N realizes this and sprints for her, with Hyuk trying to keep him from doing so. Hyuk feels as if this is a trap - and it is. Ken kills everyone to send them to the Underworld (sending N over the ledge, crashing Hyuk's car, making Hongbin slip).
Fantasy: Ken has now sent everyone to the Underworld, but this isn't the end. Ken mischievously persuades N to make a deal with Hades (Ravi; Ken pointing to Ravi over N's shoulder) as Leo did, only this time N wishes for everyone to be revived, and with it a chance to take back his girl. Hongbin attempts to persuade N to do it, as this is a potential way to become alive again. Hyuk, AGAIN, tries to prevent N from doing so but he does it anyway. N sells himself to Ravi. N is then used to complete the potion, as well as Leo. Leo crossed the River Styx for this purpose (Leo and N on the boat, both tied up in the alchemy lab). As a result, N is cursed with the Evil Eye, but his wish is also granted. So is Leo's. The potion is complete.
Dynamite: Everyone is revived and Leo has made the girl drink the potion - they are now getting married. HOWEVER N is here to try and get her back. With Hyuk and Hongbin at his side, he destroys the wedding. Ken and Ravi join in on the fun.

I remember when this song dropped, watching the video for the first time I was just captivated. Not many groups can steal your breath, but their concepts, the look, the aesthetic, the ominous vibe---everything about them are perfect. From "I'm Ready To Get Hurt" they just went for it, trying new things without even knowing if they would hit or miss. Like how many groups nowadays would try half of what these guys did, experimenting, pushing the envelope even to the point of repulsing some people (as On & On did when it dropped)?
And talent-wise? Not a throwaway member in the entire group. Each of them are talented and full of charisma, and really, Ken and Leo are the most underrated voices in KPOP. Like the fact that people slept on their power vocals and only woke up around the time of Shangri-La is shameful. Like, these guys gave us the masterpiece that was ERROR! Criminally underrated and underappreciated.

This song has made me a fan of VIXX. Since I got into kpop over a year ago, I liked all of the comebacks they had (Chained Up, Dynamite, and Fantasy), but I never really became a fan. their music, mvs, and stage performances always remind me more of performance art than 'kpop' which is how i explain to myself why they are so underrated... i think people don't want to sign up for such deep concepts or artistry, which is sort of a shame. they deserve better. i respect them for not compromising on that front for more popularity though.

I feel like this is one of the most under-appreciated VIXX songs out there. Personally, it's my favourite VIXX song (aside from On and On) and it makes me so sad that it was slept upon.

Can we just take a moment to realise the awesomeness that is vixx. The way Leo's and ken's voices melt into each other giving the signature sound of vixx. The way ravi's raps seamlessly plays off the instrumentals and creates another rythmic dimension to the song. How n's voice instills a peaceful tranquil quality to the song before the cutie chic main vocals attack with their voices. How we finally hear hongbins and hyuk's voice and I can finally have a complete collection to what vixx sounds like. Hongbin be hitting them low vocals and semi rap talk style which he excels in. Plus hyuk's drastic improvement and voice adds a richer texture to the melody.
