매 앨범마다 독보적인 컨셉을 보여주는 '빅스'가 2016년 '신' 컨셉의 [KER] 3부작에 이어 이번에는 무릉도원이라는 새로운 '동양 판타지'를 선보인다. 마치 '빅스' 멤버들이 무릉도원 속 '한 폭의 그림'이 된 듯 아름답고 신비로운 신선과도 같은 분위기로 아름다운 5월을 노래한다.
가야금을 활용한 인트로 부분이 인상적인 타이틀곡 "도원경(桃源境)"은 마치 한편의 시를 읊는 듯한 아름다운 노랫말과 컨셉돌 '빅스'만의 스타일로 무릉도원이라는 새로운 감각적 동양 판타지를 표현하고 있다. 타이틀곡 "도원경(桃源境)"은 "Fantasy", "The Closer"를 작업한 프로듀싱팀 '디바인-채널(Devine-Channel)'과 다시 한번 호흡을 맞춰 탄생된 곡이다. 'Devine-Channel'은 'Ariana Grande', 'B.O.B' 등, 유명 해외아티스트들의 작곡 참여를 비롯하여 '엑소', '소녀시대', '트와이스', '방탄소년단' 등 국내의 수많은 아티스트와의 활발한 작업활동을 이어 오고 있는 실력파 인기 작곡가팀이다.
"도원경(桃源境)"의 안무는 2016년 "Fantasy" 에서 독특하고 강렬한 퍼포먼스를 보여줬던 세계적인 안무가 'Keone & Mari'와 다시 한 번 작업하였으며, 여기에 '빅스'만의 동양판타지를 극대화하기 위하여 유정완 안무가가 부채를 활용한 퍼포먼스를 추가하여 한층 더 파격적인 무대를 만들어냈다. 마치 무릉도원 속에서 풍류를 즐기는 신선들의 모습을 표현한 듯한 퍼포먼스는 '빅스'만의 '동양 판타지'를 표현하고 있는 이번 앨범의 백미이다.
'무릉도원'이라는 배경을 현대적으로 표현하기 위하여 이미지 표현에 집중한 뮤직비디오는, 떠오르는 뮤직비디오 감독 ETUI '김우제'와 함께 하였으며, 동양적 느낌과 모던함이 공존하는 무릉도원(도원경)이라는 새로운 공간을 만들어냈다. 무릉도원 속을 넘나드는 멤버들의 모습을 통해 영상의 기승전결을 몽환적이고 아름답게 표현해 냈다.

1. #도원경(桃源境)
"도원경(桃源境)"은 긴장감 있는 신스와, 색채감이 있는 가야금의 테마로 시작되는 도입 부분이 인상적인 퓨전 R&B이다. 몽환적이고 나른한 느낌의 verse, 후렴구의 선명하고 감각적인 멜로디는 마치 그림을 그려내듯 도원경의 풍경을 묘사하는 노랫말과 어우러져 동양적 색채를 표현하고 있다.
2. #INTO_THE_VOID
"INTO THE VOID"는 'VIXX'만이 표현할 수 있는 다크함으로 꽉 채워진 퓨쳐 베이스 장르의 곡이다. 가슴이 울리는 베이스 사운드 위에 얹은 피아노 리프를 바탕으로 스트링이 가미된 사운드가 특징이며, 읊조리는 듯한 보컬이 뒤틀린 사랑에 대한 가사를 더욱 매력적으로 표현하고 있다.

"Black Out"은 신나는 비트와 묵직한 베이스를 기반으로 한 딥하우스 계열 장르이다. 멤버들의 농염하고 그루비한 보컬로 몽환적이고 섹시한 가사를 표현하여 빅스만의 세련미를 돋보이게 하였다.
4. #다가오네
'Ravi'와 'PUFF'가 함께 작곡한 "다가오네"는, 잔잔한 사운드 속에서 풍부한 감정들이 느껴지는 R&B곡이다. 이별이 다가오고 있음을 느끼는 남자의 슬픔을 섬세하고 시적인 가사로 담아냈다.

Honestly, I kind of like how they aren't as big as some of the groups popular today, because it allows them to explore themselves artistically and really create unique and quality concepts that might be too risky for the global market. To any and all newcomers, it is important to understand the meaning behind Shangri-La. Contrary to popular belief, Shangri-La is NOT a Chinese concept; it is an 'oriental fantasy' concept, as dubbed by VIXX themselves. While it is rooted in Chinese folklore it is a fusion of several East Asian elements. It is meant to embody their beauty as a whole.
( *Disclaimer: I do not claim to know everything there is to know about Korean culture (or any Asian culture for that matter). This post was created simply to highlight all of the Korean elements interwoven into the overall concept.* )
1.) *SONG TITLE*
The song title is written in both Hangul and Hanja (Chinese characters incorporated into the Korean language)
도원경= Hangul
桃源境= Hanja
Roughly translated, it means: "heavenly place filled with peach blossoms"
Note: Korean literature and poetry was written in Hanja until the 15th century, when Sejong the Great introduced Hangul. It is still used (to a certain degree) in every day life throughout not only China, but Korea and Japan as well.
2.) *SONG TITLE ORIGIN*
'The Peach Blossom Spring' is a fable written by Tao Yuanming, a Chinese poet, in 421 CE about a chance discovery of an ethereal utopia where the people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world for centuries.
The word 桃源 (peach orchard/garden) has become a general term used to describe a place like heaven, a utopia. The English title of the song, 'Shangri-La' was chosen because of its similarity to the "heavenly place" in the novel 'Lost Horizon' by British author James Hilton.
3.) *FOLDING PAPER FAN*
**EDIT: 10.19.18** Traditional (Korean) folding paper fans, 접첩선, originated during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) The fans used throughout the music video and promotional cycle were designed especially for VIXX, incorporating such things as their birth flowers and stars i.e Wind of Starlight.
(If you wish to learn more about the origins simply Google "한국전통 접선", as I am not particularly educated on this subject.)
4.) *HANBOK*
The cut of the hanboks used for Shangri-La isn't that of a traditional hanbok. It was a very conscious stylistic choice by their designer (IG: @/aranayeon) The long overcoat is called a 두루마기 (Durumagi)
5.) *INSTRUMENT*
The instrument used throughout Shangri La is NOT a Chinese instrument; it is a 가야금 (Gayageum) (a Korean zither-like string instrument, with 12 strings) It is similar to the Chinese 古箏 (Guzheng) and Japanese 箏 (Koto).
Also, Shangri-La does not contain a single English lyric. It is 100% Korean.

I have to admit when I initially saw the view count was only at 2M after 2 days I first thought well how is that anything to celebrate when other groups cross 10M views in less than 24 hours? BUT then I remembered right after that Starlights are 1) a smaller fandom and 2) even though Vixx is relatively popular they still don't really get a lot of support (which is a shame). So while these views seem small to me (as I belong to the previously mentioned fandom) for Starlights this is a big deal because I recalled how long it used to take previous comeback mvs to get to 1M views or even 500,000. So Starlights I want to say congratulations on working hard and achieving this for your boys. They may not be my UB group (they're #3 for me) but I do love them and their music and you're working hard to reward them and I think that's really sweet because I remember when my own fandom used to struggle w views too. I'll be doing my part to help stream and I genuinely hope the boys win EVERY SINGLE music show promotion because lbh, this song and mv are on another level and totally first place material! So good job Starlights, keep working hard and you've got ARMYs supporting you and Vixx ❤

This MV is very unique with that oriental vibe and the song is very pleasant to listen to. This is the first time I like a song from another boy group with just one listening. I really have to say this MV is produced with very high standard and very pleasant to watch. Well done to VIXX, and I wish these boys will win in all the music shows during their promotion.

thus far i've told myself to stay away from the comment section to avoid reading malicious and unwanted fanwars, insults, etc. but now more than ever i see that our growth in views is not just due to starlights, *it's the ever-growing milky way.* i don't care if you're an army, once, thrice, apple, pear, tree, or whatever--thanks for clicking on this mv and giving our bois a view they deserve. sure views don't always measure the quality of the song, but it still gives vixx stepping stones to getting more awards (although they don't need them, it's still nice to see them on their encore stages doing cute stuff!!). so, if you're trying trashing starlight reputation, or even another fanbase's name, i encourage you to do it outside of these music videos, such as unrelated kpop forums. if you're about to pick a fight with some anonymous person, just remember they're definitely not worth your time. neither vixx or their music need to be validated, or compare their skills to the amount of views they get; their music does it for them.

You two just say everything i have in my head 😂 but it's something thing that we have to deal with and accept it when VIXX start getting more and more well-known, like a "side effect" i guess. I too, miss the old time when the fandom was much smaller than now and we were so struggling to reach 1M views in a week, and the comment section was full of praising, cheering, thanking,... everyone was so happy and cheerful whenever some one from different fandom pass by to say hi and supporting. It's not like there aren't any of those now, it's just less than before.

Increased popularity is a double edged sword. As our boys get more noticed, it means new fans and others waiting to put them down. The down side with new fans is that they are going to be some immature ones and they are usually the loudest. All we can keep doing is just spreading positive messages about our boys and trying to be polite to other fans and fandoms. The best way to drown out negatively is to brutally murder it with kindness and the occasional sarcastic remark. :D

If I could introduce kpop with one song, I would definetely pick this one. Why? Because it has everything that a great kpop song needs to have. Beautiful vocals and people, breathtaking MV and choreography. It also indroduces korean culture a bit and gives you a special vibe which is connected to traditional music, just as to pop music. So basically this song is like the definition of kpop for me.

some aspects of this concept are chinese (like the story they got inspired by), but mostly it IS korean culture. for instance, the instrument you hear played is the korean instrument gayageum (and there are multiple articles talking about this) and their clothes are inspired by traditional korean clothes (korean fashion students analised their outfits. you can see a translation here: twitter.com/hakyeonni/status/859988014239367168 ) so while this may seem chinese, korean is the most prominent in this concept. but if you are still on about how this is chinese culture, u may instead think of this as combination of both, like in their heroes of remix performance :)

VIXX is definitely a special group. Perhaps it's also due to the fact that their company does not have a cookie template, as compared to bigger companies who have produced successful groups. Even though it saddens me that after 5 years of being active and there's still so many people who've never heard of them (especially Koreans), the people who bother spending time getting to know them get drawn to them because they are different and special. I like how they have mostly been involved in the creative process when it comes to their work, and that each and every one of them is also able to pursue their own interests and personal goals in addition to their goals as a team.
How many idol groups have we seen getting destroyed because less popular members were getting shoved into the back seat etc.? To date, not one single VIXX member has been left cold. I believe that is important in "levelling up" the team as a whole and that they will only keep getting better cuz they all get to mature individually as well. What they decide to do or experiment with has never been and probably will never be in "what's trendy at the moment", they just do what they want and think is good, which is also one reason why I admire Ravi.. despite constantly getting so much hate from the hip-hop fan community, he still continues to make the music he wants and loves, cuz y'know life is too short to want to please people who don't matter. Oh, and if you follow VIXX, chances are you'll never be bored cuz they probably have an overflowing bank of creativity waiting to be crafted & shown to the world. And whatever they do you can be assured that it's of the best quality they can make. I really like how with every comeback they get to say "We tried something that isn't really like our style, but we hope you like it as much as we do."
Honestly I don't care if they never get as popular as groups like EXO etc. I probably also like VIXX a lot more cuz they're not as popular. They have a strong fanbase that is surprisingly calm and mature despite the age group of the majority and I feel that that says a lot about VIXX because fans reflect the idols. I am a SHINHWA fan and haven't really been a big fan of another idol group until VIXX came along. Hopefully their team & friendship gets stronger and perhaps, one day they will be able to be like SHINHWA :)

I'm an ARMY but VIXX is one of the groups that deserve more attention. I've been watching them for a while now and it makes me so sad that they're not getting the recognition they deserve. Their music is addictive, their concepts are very unique (haven't seen anything like it before), and their visuals are stunning. Their dancing skills are ON FREAKING POINT. I hope that with time, people will start to like them more and more instead of listening to crappy music. VIXX produces real music. Period.

It sometimes frustrates me that VIXX is constantly under-appreciated in the Kpop community when it comes to their dances. They have, and I'm stating this as a fact, ONE of the most impressive series of choreographies.
Let's start with Voodoo doll (not in chronological order). The choreography had to be altered because it was too scary for some broadcasts. Can you believe that? A dance had to be altered not because it was too sexy, but because it expressed a horrifying subject just from dance. Not many groups are able to pull of such a concept with the dance so well, and yet some people still think they're not the concept kings **sips tea**
Error- I can't express this enough, they told an entire love story of a machine though dancing. Every part of that dance was a story, each member had their part of helping each other out, powering each other up (literally). Had one member been missing during this dance, it would've been EXTREMELY difficult to dance, because the dance used *each* member to tell a story. Look at Hongbin's part for example, literally EVERY member is becoming a part of him or controlling his movements.
G.R.8.U - This isn't an impressive or over the top dance but Hakyeon/N choreographed it. They were still considered very young rookies at that time (a year after debut(???) and for N to choreograph a title song is incredible. He is such a good dancer and yet he's often overlooked simply because his dance is more elegantly manly (contemporary/ballerina/jazz) rather than those extremely hard-hitting, in your-face dances. Dare I say he has one of the best stage presence I've ever seen? I wouldn't make these claims if I don't believe they're true, I've been a Kpop stan for 4-5 years now, with being a huge multifandom, and just stanning VIXX two months ago, so I would like to believe that I'm not being completely biased here.
Shangri-La - they're dancing with fans, need I say more? They make it seem so effortless opening and closing the fans, and I'm just in awe. I have actually danced with fans a few times before, and trust me, there's so many rooms for errors. This is just another example of VIXX doing something new.
Fantasy- I can't even explain this one, you just have to watch it to really understand what's so great about it. The song is full of slow and fast parts, and for their body movements to flow with EVERY part of that song. This dance is nothing but pure talent and hard work that some people have been sleeping on. (especially the extremely fast part where they move frantically( 2:04 of the Fantasy dance practice))
Hyde- yes, I'm adding Hyde, which is something I stupidly didn't add in my original post. For the people who don't know, Hyde is based on an old story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Mr Hyde was Jekyll's alter self). The entire concept of Hyde itself is about someone being in an abusive relationship where half of them wants to hurt the person while the other half wants to love them. It's a very dark story as they try to hold back their alternate selves, but VIXX executes that entire concept perfectly, and once again this is why they're Concept kings.
Okay back to the dance, the dance itself is the epitome of control. Throughout the entire dance there are tons of moments where half of the members become the other. (SO for example one member's arm would basically look like another's arm as if they're controlling them), or that half of them would be doing one thing and the other would be dancing another; and that's so important because to truly maximize the importance of this concept, vixx really needs to convey the storyline of having two halves of personality as a dance. I truly suggest you watch this dance video if you haven't. The dance is the internal struggles of good/control vs chaos/evil, and the main Chorus dance is extremely important. They're reaching out with one hand (almost as if they're involuntarily doing it) and eventually then holding themselves back with another, again this has everything to do with the storyline, and the most obvious part is when the dance goes "just can't control" and they're holding their hands next to the head. One of my favorite parts is when Ravi begins rapping and he's literally controlling all the members for that brief time. Hyde is an extremely powerful dance that you can enjoy without knowing the lyrics, but once you do, the dance is no longer just a powerful dance, it's art.
There's so many more dances from VIXX even their B side-track dances are great. (Love Me Do; Hot Enough; Desperate; B.O.D.Y; Black Out; etc.) it's so awesome to know Starlights appreciate them so much, it feels like VIXX is our hidden treasures sometimes. I really do hope more people understand truly what makes VIXX's dances so great and unique

Jiayi Chen You pointed out a really important aspect about VIXX. Yes they have top choreographies all the time and I am not saying this just because I am a STARLIGHT. They are such hard choreos to follow with no move being a simple one. Even in that Chinese reality show they did, their performances were the best. The sync, the creativity and the hardwork is so evident😍
I don't even have to read your comment to know that you're damn right!! I have to admit, at first (before really becoming a Starlight) I didn't quite realise how great their choreographies are (though NEVER did I find them bad or boring!!), but I came to appreciate them more and more because there's so much in those dances, so many details, they just don't get boring no matter how often you watch them, and its incredible how well they fit the concepts, and there's so much more I could say about them!
I thought about mentioning other songs that you didn't, but I wouldn't be able to stop any time soon, I guess, so I won't. As you said, they have so many noteworthy and impressive choreographies!
Jiayi Chen I started paying attention to Vixx because Eunhyuk from Suju complimented their concepts but it was Hyde's choreography that turned me into a Starlight. I've been a kpop stan since 2009 and love many many many groups but Vixx has the best choreography in the whole damn industry that's just scientific fact.
ah how could I have not listed Hyde! Good thing I can just continuously add to my original comment as I have more free time to write more of VIXX's dances. Do any of you have any other suggestions or can you guys share what your favorite choreographies from VIXX are?
