  • De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a painful condition that affects the area on the thumb side of the wrist. Symptoms include pain over that area when you rotate your forearm, pick things up or try and do a pushup.
An easy test to see if you have DeQuervain's tenosynovitis is Finkelstein's test. However sometimes it can give a negative test (it isn't' painful) but you still have the problem.
In some cases the pain will come with wrist extension and on weight bearing. It’s important to rule out other causes of wrist pain like fractures and ligament tears. The pain is caused by irritation to the tendon as they pass under tight tissues into the wrist.
Here is what is in the video:
1:00 Over view of what De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is and how to test for it.
2:00 Exercise 1 - whole arm stretch on floor to help loosen muscles of arm and wrist.
2:20 Exercise 2 Whole arm stretch kneeling
3:07 Exercise 3 Supination Exercise using a resistance bar
3:40 Exercise 4 strengthening with a resistance bar.
4.25 Exercise 5 Forearm stretch with rotation
    5:33 Exercise 6 Forearm massage
Follow these 6 steps through and you will start to notice a change. Don't worry if it is painful when you do the exercises. But you will know if you have over done it if the wrist is more painful the next day...that is a sign of increased irritation.
You can buy the resistance bar at: www.dmoose.com/

I’m pretty active, rock climb, play basketball and ride motorcycles. But I’m slightly embarrassed to say I think it’s come from my other passion - playing video games. One fighting video game in particular.. lots of fast repetitive actions over n over. Not good!!! That with phone use (which has gone way up due to lockdown boredom) I think has done it. I also play guitar (again maybe repetitive straining) Do you think I’ve diagnosed correctly? And is this the vid for me? Thanks so much

Yes, functional medicine doctors are the future. I'm glad the cause was found for you. Low thyroid is important for many conditions, thinning hair, weight gain, joint pain, slow digestion. But we can't say it is the cause of all these things as there might be other causes. Same goes for De Quervain's. In your case it might have been, in mine or the next person's it might not be. Keeping an open mind is the key.

Recently started to suffer with this in one hand and as a yoga teacher it's a nightmare. Being able to do a push up is crucial and it's basically excruciating. Other than that though, I only really feel pain when I wake up in the morning, assuming it seizes up over night? Once I'm up and get some movement it's fine but still painful if I put my weight on it in push up position. So I'm hoping this works...

Hate to break it to you, but what you had is almost certainly not de Quervains syndrome… Finklesteins test is the gold standard for this condition, and there will always be pain. I’m guessing the mri just showed swellings in the area, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily de Quervains. Given that there were “shooting” pains, it was most likely a nerve issue, affecting the radial or median nerve.
