    What I tend to do on the second day is spritz some water (with a little bit of conditioner in there) on my hair and then with my hands scrunch the hair again, it dries pretty quick and revives the waves quite nicely without requiring a full wash

    Yay more wavy content! I love seeing the transformation!
    My biggest lesson from my journey was that protecting waves overnight is the key. I put my hair in a "pineapple" (loose yet secure bun on the very top of the head) and sleep on a silk/satin pillowcase to minimize friction on the mids-ends. In the morning I slap on a shower cap while bathing, gently remove the cap and pineapple, allow it to settle for about 10 minutes, then glaze/scrunch a mixture of light-hold gel and water to tame some frizz and restore a little definition and shine.
    A little dry shampoo on the roots gets me through day 3, though I often also do something to style it - pin back some front pieces, half-up/half-down, low bun, etc.

    To make my curls last to day 2 I loosely pull my hair up into a silk scrunchie which sits at about the roots of your bangs so it is out of the way of the pillow damage. Hope that works for you. Love the bounce you are getting.

    This video was really helpful! I'm convinced my hair is actually wavy because the shorter strands and ends get clearly wavy in high humidity and sometimes right after a shower even if I'm not doing anything special. However despite loving the look of wavy hair I could never do the "standard" routines, I don't have the patience. But I think I'll experiment with incorporating some of these elements you're using to see if I can get some effect with minimal effort.

      Have you tried going through the motions of washing your hair (for me, a good scalp scrub in the shower) but only under warm water rather than using shampoo? I used to be a stinky itchy greaseball if I didn't wash every other day then about a decade ago I discovered half my problem was the shampoo and conditioner residue on my scalp and the other half was constantly stripping all the natural oils out of my hair with shampoos for oily hair and dandruff treatments... The grease problem took maybe a month of no shampoo to realize it didn't need to keep pumping it out at that level, and now I've had to start oiling the ends a few times a week when it's really dry here. But my hair is longer and stronger than I've ever gotten it before, despite that I started colouring it again a few years ago (not up to my scalp, just streaks and highlights). And when I'm being a disgusting cave troll, I can go two weeks without washing it, with minimal stink, minimal grease and still nearly no dandruff. It doesn't work for everyone but I'm never going back to every other day shampooing!

      It's seborrheic dermatitis and I have recently had the worst case all over! Now wash hair weekly after an overnight scalp mask of aloe vera and tea tree oil and running a boar bristle brush through it twice and then I give my head a good rub and rinse it every day or two. Acne spot treatment gel, and tea tree oil in a carrier (I use argon oil or olive oil) after washing (at night, just rinse in the morning) and I use all natural baby mineral sunscreen which is helping heal all the sores from it. I have health issues too, so mine got extra bad fast.

      @@vedrolina4338 I'm not diagnosing so much as sharing information. The original comment I replied to mentioned specific symptoms I also had which are indicators of a very common skin condition, also known as dandruff. Do some research before you go jumping down someone's throat for trying to be helpful. The original comment I replied to even mentioned how nobody talks about this, even though it's extremely common (just an imbalance of the microbiome, like thrush) and easily treated. I spent nearly a year with giant freaking holes on my face, chest, arms and back that wouldn't close because nobody talks about it so I had no idea dandruff was caused by a microbe or that it could spread. So forgive me for wanting to save someone else from a disfiguring condition, but I'm not going to keep this information to myself simply because someone else might feel I'm being rude. Also I highly suggest you look up seborrheic dermatitis and the medicated shampoos designed to treat it: head & shoulders, selsun blue, you know dandruff shampoo. I find that after scrunching out as much water as I can putting in my leave in conditioner before I put my hair in the microfiber towel helps my hair recover it’s waves quicker because all I have to do is rake in my gel and then scrunch my hair in. So that might help.
    And loose French braids or French twists really help my hair through until I wash it again.

    Hi, long time CGM girl here ~ I loved the way your hair turned out! I have fine, wavy hair and a strong wind can blow the waves out 😂 What I noticed you did and what I’ve learnt: I think your hair was too dry when you started adding your products, you could see all the hairs that already had separated from the clumps. I think it was because you’d plopped which removed a lot of water. I don’t remove any excess water from my hair until I’ve put all the styling products in and then I just use some paper towel to scrunch the excess. To distribute the products evenly use a wet brush (that’s what it’s called). I also use the wet brush for styling. I take a section of hair, curl it around the brush and then let it go, works really well, especially for covering the cowlick at the back of my hair. I think being a wavy is hard work but think it does look very pretty when you can get it right. Sharing with the aim of helping 🌻

      @@mommingpursuit ah, good question because people who seem to know about hair say the curl has memory and so the more times it’s allowed to curl the more it will curl on it’s own, which would indicate straightening in between is possibly not the best thing to do. Sorry, not knowledgeable enough to give a better answer. I only wash mine every 5-7 days and in between do a refresh which means mine is curly all the time.

    I have 2b-c hair that a little more curl resiliant. But it's fine and down to my waist so the hair is heavy and the curl is fragile.
    Here is the post wash steps that helped reduce frizz. Part my hair in the shower with a wide tooth comb. Squeeze water out with my hands. Use lightweight water based leave in conditioner. Use microfiber to squeeze out excess water and conditioner. Lightly scrunch in gell. Use same wet towel to scrunch curls.
    The wetter your hair is when you scrunch. The less frizz. I prefer to air dry, diffusing kill the curl definition for little volume payoff. And then I use a serum to soften the cast

  • @ItsThatJo
    @ItsThatJo Před 2 lety +6

    I'm glad to see your progress in your wavy journey, Lucy! Loving your results! I think a lot of of people in the wavy-curly hair world preach advice as if it's a one-size-fits-all solution. I have a similar hair profile to yours: oily scalp, fine to normal strand thickness, low hair density (which, like yours, goes through cycles of shedding every few months). The only difference is that my hair is curlier than yours (my strands start at 2C near the roots and end with 3B ringlets, so I think that I may one day reach cohesive 3A or 3B curl with the right routine). I have also found that most advice doesn't work on my hair because so much of the styling process depends on your hair being able to handle heavy products, and mine really doesn't. Curl creams dry it out in the long run, leave-in conditioners weigh it down, mousse doesn't give me the curls I want (though I do like the volume) and gel application+diffusing is a long, tedious process that dries my scalp a lot and leaves it itchy the next day. I've just been giving it a break lately to let it heal up but I'm seriously at a loss as to what on earth I can do to style it properly. I want to give gel styling another try soon, because despite the itchiness, I did love the results and could see the long-term potential of consistent use. I also tried doing what you do, applying leave-in conditioner and then gel, and my scalp did NOT like that. I hope that following your journey gives me insight as to what I can do to my hair as well!

      Have you tried plopping with gel and letting it sit in there for a while before air drying? That's the routine I followed when I was taking really good care of my hair and it worked fairly well for me. not as much volume as drying but if you have time to let it sit for a bit it comes out p good :))

    • @ItsThatJo
      @ItsThatJo Před 2 lety +1

      @@brynna8792 Hi! I haven't tried plopping, but what I did was adjust my gel application. I started applying less gel and then only diffusing it until I could feel the cast on the ends and my roots dry. I don't waste time trying to diffuse my hair until it's completely dry anymore. The results have been better for sure! I have also since then gotten a big haircut and my curls are forming much more easily now, so I believe it's also a matter of my hair being better with a shorter length. Nowadays, I also alternate between products and try not to give myself a hard time over the definition of my curls and my hair feels super healthy! At the end of the day, it really was a matter of not caring so much and not trying so hard :)

    That seems like an awful lot of work. Then again, my hair waves no matter what I do to it, but it lives loosely braided as soon as it's dry so it usually doesn't matter anyway. When I want it extra wavy, I lightly scrunch the whole thing into a loose bun secured with a clip so the weight of wet hair doesn't pull itself straight over my scalp while it dries.
    When I it has dried straight cause I forgot to scrunch it, I can often get some wave back by scrunching dry hair with wet hands or in a damp cloth, especially if there's any kind of product in my hair. but that might be because my hair's default is wavy...
    I do have a question though... if getting it to set quick is the key to keeping the waves you want, and you're ALREADY raking all the wave out while it's wet when you put in the leave-in conditiner, can't you just towel-turban or rub it dry for a few minutes to get some extra water out so that when you scruch it, you don't lose half your setting product with the water you squeeze out??

I like the bonnets with wide elastic bands instead of a thin elastic band; it's more comfortable and doesn't leave a line in my skin like the thin elastic band does. Try to go for a lined bonnet so there's not seams against the hair but it's just for sleeping so you could wear it inside out if you can't find a lined one.

    I have a VERY similar type of hair to yours, I guess it's just a bit thicker, but since I'm growing it out, I've noticed I lost it A LOT. It's been going on for over a year now, and I"ve done so many blood tests and nothing comes up wrong... I also of course excellent shampoos & conditioners AND take vitamins... And since I've always heard that it's better not to shampoo to often, I really try my best to stretch too but... I used to wash it every other day as well when it was short and never had this problem. What you said at the beginning of the video just made me have a lightbulb moment, I'll definitely try to shampoo every other day or every three days to see if I get any improvement ; ;

    To get the waves on your next hair day: try to get one of those continuous spray bottles on Amazon. They will get your hair wet with the least amount of water possible... so your hair can dry in 20 min... dissolved with the tiniest amount of your preferred leave-in holding creme.

    i have also not had luck stretching washes, usually I can only manage a few days during the winter. I recently discovered Twist by Ouidad products at Target and I like the conditioner and light hold gel from them a lot because the conditioner has protein.
    I would also totally recommend a protein filler like Colorful Neutral Protein Filler, its a clear liquid of hydrolyzed proteins that just bonds to your hair. it really takes to my wavy hair well, and helps the curled waves become more pronounced. I just douse my damp hair in it and plop it in a tshirt while it dries.

    I have found that my waves are getting kinkier/wavier every day and as I get older. I don’t have an oily scalp, but I do have thin/fine hair that’s not quite as long as yours. When my hair looses its definition in the waves, a spray bottle of water and some of the gel to recrunch the waves helps. Just rewetting and adding a little bit more gel helps. I hope you are having as much fun as I have been having discovering this new hair look! It’s fun yet frustrating after living so long with straight hair. 🙂

    Fellow wavey fine haired here, who , before curly method, thought she had straight hair. I too would get the frizzy poof after dry brushing. In fact the reason I started doing it was because I've lost so much hair and wanted a fuller hair style. I'm surprised you can't stretch your washes. I had the same problem with oily hair the next day, but after curly method I now only wash twice a week. When watching your last video, I was thinking you need to get more of the water out and use a light leave in conditioner before the gel. Try styling before you dry it. Then don't touch until dry. Seems like you are already doing all that. Looks great.

I have 3C-ish curly hair, and have worn my hair naturally curly every single day since 1992!! Even when I do vintage styles, or braids or any styles like that, I just use my own natural curls. I wash my hair every day and have never had a single issue from that. I don't follow CGM, don't think it was even a thing back in my day. I just do whatever I feel like doing. I love my hair and am grateful for it every day, gray hairs and all! :)

    I'm quite lazy so when I want my hair to be wavy I follow a simple routine: after towel drying my hair I put a mousse on it, blow dry my hair about 80% focusing on my roots, than I wet my hand and put a leave in conditioner on my hair to make it slightly wet again and scrunch it, than I just let the rest of my hair air dry. This way I get some pretty waves easily.

  • @lasphynge8001

    I'm here with you on the every other day wash. It seems to be a common issue with fine hair, I think it's not even that our scalp is particularly greasy, there's also not enough hair to soak up all of that oil, and probably also low porosity issues for straighter textures (which is my case, zero waviness *sigh*). Like you, I tried diligently, tenaciously even, to stretch my washes for a whole year, and it only got me discomfort, more hair problems and quite enough public shame, so I came to the same conclusion as you... every other day is fine, I just make sure to use a very gentle shampoo.
    Also I'm at the beginning of the video still, but flax gel masks have been a game changer for me. My ends look very much like yours, very dry and foamy, and I've found that doing a flax mask before a shampoo at least once a week (taking advantage of the week-end) really resuscitates them. They look much more moisturized and my hair feels overall so much suppler, softer and shinier... so I'm very hopeful that you'll have as much success!
