    The Yamato was the flagship of the Yamato class of Japanese Battleship, one of the biggest on the seas of her time. She was built with her sister ship, the battleship called Musashi. Built by the Kure Naval Arsenal, she was 836 feet long and weighed 72,800 tons. Laid down on the 4th of November 1937, she was launched August 8th, 1940, and commissioned December 16th, 1941. The Yamato was named after the Yamato Province in Japan, she was Japan’s only hope of destroying the allied fleets off the coast of Okinawa, she was outfitted with 9 18.1-inch cannons. However, without the proper air covering and fuel her last assignment was doomed to be a suicide mission, struck by 19 American Arial Torpedoes the crew of the mighty Yamato watched and fought back in horror is their ship sunk. 2,498 men out of the 3,332 crew members died that day. They didn’t go down without a fight however, the Yamato went into battle as a “naked battleship” without any cover from aircraft, after only two hours of fighting the Yamato and 5 other Japanese ships had been sunk, over 4,000 people lost their lives in the battle. It took 10 American aircraft to sink the mighty battleship. Today the Yamato is seen as the most feared battleship in the Japanese navy in WWII.

    bit of history: IJN Yamato was sunk a few miles off the coast of Okinawa during the massive US invasion. She was part of Operation Ten-Go and was supposed to beach herself and act as a massive floating fortress. US submarines spotted her and her task force which resulted in over 300 US aircraft to launch and attack the fleet. Yamato was hit so much that the japanese attempted to counter flood the other side but that only bought the ship around 30 mins of life before she capsized and broke in two from the largest magazine detonation on any warship. This detonation was caused by loose shells colliding with each other and the sides of the magazine.

    • @kellykimble665
      @kellykimble665 Před 2 lety +6

      Another fun fact: There were three main classes that were planned to be bigger than
      HIJN Yamato, which came in at 263 meters, but never made it to production. 1. The Montana Class Battleship. Made by the U.S, the Montana class would be 17 meters longer than Yamato, at 280 meters long. Yamato displaced 65,000 tons, Montana would displace 70,000. 2. The KMS H41. Essentially a scaled up Bismarck, H41 was 282 meters long, and displaced 68,000 tons.
      For anyone who decided to scroll down, you get lucky! Bonus Information: HIJN Musashi, sister to HIJN Yamato, was marginally larger than Yamato. Sadly, I can't find information for just how much larger she was.

    How Yamato sank
    On 1945 April 7th the American operation 10 go was an operation to destroy the Yamato. Apparently, it was the hardest battleship mission for japan when they launched it but the Yamato was actually planned from 1935 and it took them from 1935 to1943. and what Yamato'smission was to protect the island of Okinawa. Then in 1945, they launched the mission or operation with 7 aircraft carriers which = almost 400 planes but they used 396 to attack and I think 148 went down from her, to be honest, she is a mad lad. anyways the Yamato sank before she capsized she was on a 45-degree angle on port and then she capsized and 1 min later she blows up in the main magazine which was so strong to split her in half then she sank in an up-side-down v-break. 3405 death on Yamato and 5 other ships sank.
    there you have it

  • @launcesmechanist9578
    @launcesmechanist9578 Před 2 lety +16

    The IJN Yamato was one of three 'Super Battleships' and it along with the sister ship Musashi were the largest battleships in the world and the only ships fitted with the massive 18.1in cannons. According to the story, the bombs dropped at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 were actually armor-piercing shells from Yamato and Musashi that had been modified to be fitted under aircraft and dropped as bombs.
    The Yamato was also the pride of the Japanese Imperial Navy. So much so that on her bow the Emperor of Japan had his seal, a chrysanthemum, made of solid gold, affixed to show that the Yamato was as much his ship as it was Japan's. Kinda how like the USS Houston was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's favorite warship.
    Bit of history, USS Houston was in the Japanese Navy's 'Bingo Book' meaning that every time Japanese forces spotted her they made every attempt to sink her and numerous false messages were sent out claiming 'Mr. President, we have sunk your ship!' Yet Houston remained in the conflict until finally being sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait in 1942 as part of the ABDA (America, Britain, Dutch (Netherlands), Austrailia command alliance) rout. The Japanese, so infuriated by this ship's constant escapes and near-misses, machinegunned the crew in the water as they escaped their sinking ship. Her Captain, Albert Rooks, received the Medal of Honor for his heroics and the ship's chaplain, George Rentz, was awarded the Navy Cross when he gave his life jacket to another crewman in the water who couldn't swim.
    In some ways, the story of the Yamato and Musashi are similar to the Bismarck and Tirpitz with the exception that both ships died fighting while Bismarck was sunk fairly quickly at the start of the war and Tirpitz hid in a river for the rest of the war.
    The third ship of the class, Shinano, was converted to be an aircraft carrier after the events of Midway but was sunk by the USS Archerfish, a Balao-class diesel submarine while moving to a new harbor for final fitting and arming.

    The yamato had 9 main guns all of witch were 18 inch they were so big that the British navy had 1 ship with a singular 18 inch gun (the HMS Furious) when fired its crew said that it snowed inside the "snow" was sawn off rivet heads. If the Yamato's guns were ever fired all at once it might have been heard halfway around the world
