Fast forward a year and I accidentally bought a competitive list.

If that is true, we can hold out some hope yet that unique BA units and HQs like Sanguinary guard might not only be getting kits, but also useable sanguinary guard rules that can keep the character of the chapter (and peoples older models, which are still fantastic to play against) legal on the competitive table. As for community games… Fuck ‘em, firstborn are always going to be welcome as my opponents, and I don’t care what GW officially ‘bans’, they made a domino effect of dumbass decisions in the Primaris handling and I’m not going to let them police my opponent’s veteran army with that. I barely play anything outside of story matches with locals anyway, so if something doesn’t work, fuck it and have fun with existing rules :)
It's honestly kind of amazing how Assault Centurions have gone from being a maligned F-Tier unit to something people are more than willing to put into their lists these days. Obviously AoC helped, and Steven Box from Vanguard Tactics shone the spotlight on them, but they aren't only good in Blood Angels. Sallies ones are great for various little reasons, White Scars ones can advance and charge (and get up to flat 4 damage), and Iron Hands Successors(Born Heroes/Whirlwind of Rage) ones can be hitting on 2's with exploding 6's all the while spamming a 5+++ for a mere 1CP every time they come under threat. And let's not forget a Black Templar Centurion Sergeant with Champion of the Feast and The Crux Obsidian to turn him into a little monster! Fun times.

Lastly, Sallies have a bunch of strats that you can use on them that aren't Core-locked. They've got 2CP to max flamer shots, 1CP for 3 MWs with flame weapons, 1CP make flame weapons pistol type to fire in combat, 1CP for essentially "All Is Dust", and 2CP to Overwatch for another friendly unit plus Heroic 2d6" afterwards.
Honestly, while it isn’t Assault Centurions (though I do have two units of them), I’m looking forward to building a Crimson Fist slowly-advancing wall of ludicrous bolter output. Each devastator centurion takes both Heavy and Hurricane bolt launchers, with every single six from their many shots triggering another shot (from the first part of their Chapter trait) and every unit being the minimum number, three, so that shooting into anything with at least five more models than themselves gives them a benefit to hit (the other part of their Chapter trait). The troop tax is some manouvreable rookie intercessors, with auto bolt rifles (the more shots the better, and can still shoot while advancing to be a nuisance), and the rest of the army beyond a captain is devastator units and two assault variants with hurricane bolters and flamers. Sure, it’s not going to be the cream of the crop, but so long as I keep practicing rolling on mass quickly so I’m not a pain for my opponent, and catch top-meta lists in the community off-guard with a 2:1 lead-to-air ratio, I think this is going to be magnificently malicious fun. It’s taking the slept-on units and instilling the fear of God that really keeps the competitive scene interesting :)

Ultramarines are basically normal Space Marines. Only few unique units. There are around 3 major differences. 1. They have excellent strat to reroll 1s to hit for 1 CP. You can use it on any Core unit. So never worry about overcharged plasma, just pop it. Plasma Inceptors suddenly don't need Jump Pack Captain for example or Hellblasters can operate independently. 2. They can redeploy 3 units at the start of match. This is especially strong with Invictor Tactical Warsuits as you can simply deploy them in range to MOVE, SHOOT and CHARGE if you go first or hide them if you go second, first round. But can be used on most other units. 3. They have excellent relic: Seal of Oath. This lets you reroll everything (hits and wounds) with all units around bearer against 1 enemy unit. This can be very strong not only because it is strong but also because it potentially enables you to skip Captains/Lieutenants if you wish so (and use Dreadnought as reroll 1s aura giver if nesesery against different targets for 1 cp). So you can run for example Bike Chaplain + Chief Librarian as HQ to save points. 4. Suppressors have some nice power, they can move and shoot no problem in tactical or even you can give them all doctrines and move shot no penalty+ better ap. Of course Calgar is VERY solid Chapter Master and beatstick that is INSANELY tanky. Victrix Guard can be useful as small unit, Tigurius is VERY decent Librarian with great buff -1 to getting hit for 1 unit and Gulliman is probably going to get buffed into the outer space in the next codex. Tyranic vets are so so, and other characters have some uses but not all that great. Uriel Ventris is pretty fun captain since he basically have 2 very nice relic weapons on himself (but weak warlord trait, sadly). So they play just like chapterless space marines with this few small twists and few additional characters.

Funny tale: At my club we were running a crusade to make a lore based narrative campaign, but most people brought competitive lists to it, si yeah, no lore from their part. As for me, I usually ran a normal Primaris Captain with Auto Bolt Rifle and Artificier Power Sword. I got a lot of critics from other people due to my captain not being a Chapter Master nor being a Jumpy/Bike captain. (It was a narrative, so I wasnt gonna put a captain as chapter master when Dante is still around) Still, my captain may not be fast but he moved from cover to cover until he reached combat and man was he a beast. He had Soulwarden plus Artisan of War, giving him the Adamantine Cloak for a 5+++, his relic was the Encarmine Warblade (S+2, AP-4, D3) with 2MW on 6s to wound besides the damage. He pretty mucy obliterated anything he went across with

Great list I use alot of Sanginary Guard in my army along with Dante, Mephiston, and either a Astreus or a Whirlwind and Redemtor Dreadnought setup. The list works well and I am winning alot right now.
I always get goosebumps when I read Dante’s codex entry. Especially may favourite part: “To describe him as a legend is an understatement bordering on insult”
Baal Pred Overcharged engines would work if the Baal also came with 'Lucifier pattern stabilisers' or something which made all Heavy weapons Assault weapons when it advances. Also needs a rule where the turret weapon at least gets 'Rending' on unmodified 6s to Wound it gets AP-4. Furioso Dread should be our Venerable, so WS and BS 2+ and Undying 6+ FNP. The Death Company Dread should therefore get a base 5+ FNP (with the stratagem Refusal to Die providing 4+ FNP), or T8 like the Ironclad. Both the Furioso and the DC Dread should be M8", or get Advance and Charge. Tycho is dead and should just be removed from the Codex...Legends. The Bladeguard Ancient needs a blade...I'll say no more... Stormraven WAS iconic for Blood Angels, but then everyone got them, so now it's not...then most other chapters (DA, SW, DW) got cool unique flyers...thanks GW. Whirlwind not only provides a table-wide-ranged Fight last but also denies Overwatch from any unit! That is why it is Tier 1 bordering on Sanguinary Tier for Blood Angels imo as it also provides a unit you do want at the back to hold backfield objectives and still effect the game in an obscured position. Astorath needs the Wise Orator 2+ Litany ability for being a Master of Sanctity. The Master of Sanctity ability alone should come with the 2+ chant rather than the trait which should be tweaked. Similarly Corbulo needs a Jump pack and free restores of the Selfless healer. Corbulo is THE apothecary of 40k, but he's outdone by everyone's homebrew Priests/Apothecaries. It is a nice feeling that as a Blood Angels player we can finally think about squeezing in an Assault squad or two, but ideally I'd also want an Outrider Detachment option where if you take a Jump pack equipped HQ your Assault squads get Objective Secured and +1 Attack per model. As it is costing you not insignificant CP. Not sure Servitors and Company Vets are Tier 2 anymore, used to be, not now in Nephilim. Not sure Intercessors are Tier 1, the Phobos ones are Tier 1 due to concealed positions and guerilla tactics however. Key point on the Chaplains is that you need to spend a CP for Wise Orator triat to get the 2+ chants, bit annoying. Would have been good to tier list the Stratagems too, even though Blood Angels don't have many good ones, but Angels Sacrifice as you mentioned is a key one. The Sanguinary Guard HI one is also very good.
No kidding about our dreads, really miss the 8" move and the extra 3" pile in/consolidate on the DC dread. Also how are they like the only dreads in the game minus Leviathan without core still is beyond me. Don't get me started on the Baal predator hahaha why GW just why.
Note, technically, both the Blood Chalice and the stratagem that allows you to put one unit into any doctrine only provide the benefits 'each time a model in that unit makes an attack'. This means that they can't declare the bonus attack from their super-doctrine, and only get bonus AP, as per RAW. People usually aren't aware of that (Auspex Tactics definitely missed it here), and play as if the bonuses activated during the attack declaration step, before making the attacks, though. I think this needs a clarification or errata.
The Codex Space Marines FAQ already clears this up: CODEX SUPPLEMENT COMBAT DOCTRINE BONUSES In each of the Space Marines Codex Supplements, you will find a detachment ability that confers additional bonuses to units with the Combat Doctrines ability while a particular doctrine is active for your army (e.g. Scions of Guilliman in Codex Supplement: Ultramarines, Savage Fury in Codex Supplement: Space Wolves etc). Whenever a rule allows a unit to gain the bonus of a particular doctrine even though it is not active for the rest of your army (e.g. the Adaptive Strategy Stratagem, page 104), then whilst that rule applies to that unit, that unit will also gain the benefit from any such detachment ability.
@@kokevinny You are referring to the issue that got errataed a few months into the 9th edition when it wasn't clear if the relevant stratagem activated super-doctrines. That was a separate issue. It got fixed. You have not read my post. The relevant super-doctrine does get activated, but it only becomes active when models are making attacks, i.e. after all the attacks are declared. BA super-doctrine gives them +1A, but, again, in this context it is activated too late.

Unless I am mistaken, when it comes to a Deepstrike charge don't you have to make a 9-inch charge due to the text specifying "more than 9 inches from an enemy model"? Then the closest you can get to an enemy model is 9.1 inches, meaning that you have to move 8.1 (have to round up) inches to be within engagement range. Thank you for cranking out quality content!
you are correct - you have to deploy your troops 9" away from enemy models still. However, with the +1 to all charge rolls, you effectively only need to roll a 8 or higher to get in.
drop pod is pretty nice for Death Company Dreadnought, but given that anything with jump packs has death from above so you can drop anyways just not round 1, its almost worth it to hold on to it until your round 2 or 3 mass drop counter charge
I actually do pretty well with a single squad of Supressors. I split fire them because the hit on 3"s from a board away and are bound to stop Overwatch from squads when I make a charge. Also I have one squad of Heavy Intercessors with hellfire bolt guns and play them midfield or executors from the back field and they're a solid Ob-sec and haven't failed me unlike my whirlwind(or dice)
Our baal keyword is dead( poor Baal predator), we should have good bikes, good flyers and SO SO SO Strong Psykers by lore. Mephi can be as strong as ALMOST MAGNUS NOW. I've always found it weird that we have the strat to let a psyker get one more cast, i understand lorewise why they're strong but fail to see it come into gameplay terms with how lackluster our powers are besides the wings and quickening combo

Blood angels are true space marine main faction. Even with papa smurf and wolves. They have flaw, they struggle, they fight and have best hawk boy as Father. even Blood ravens are their copy x).
I keep hearing about the Whirlwind, but not only are you paying a CP for that fights last, but shooting indirect, it’ll only go off in they score a hit on a 4+ And call me crazy but I’d rank Assault Marines over VanVets. Way cheaper with free upgrades - but they also don’t take an ever essential Elite slot
i've always wondered about how first born chapters are variously described as only 1000 strong but also significant battle field forces on a planetary scale. As I have read no novels, I wonder how authors get around this glaring anomaly. As for blood angels I suppose we'll have to wait for codex blood angels to see how their uniqueness carries over into the new squad types: can we get to see angel winged suppressors? does the perfection of the primarus gene preclude the worst defects of the blood-angels black rage?
It is also stated that 1 Space Marine is stronger than 1000 normal soldiers, he is a walking tank capable of destroying buildings and vehicles with his bare hands. Of course 1000 almost immortal insanely experienced super powerful soldiers with the best wargear and weapons is a significant planetary force. 1 company (around 100 marines wity some vehicles) is capable of conquering planets.

Shame the Baal Predator is so low on the BA tier list. Would fit happily in a Salamanders list with all those flamers if they weren't exclusive. It feels like it's trapped in a bad marriage.

Tiny note, sang priests don’t put units in assault doctrine (unfortunately) they make the you have attacks you have behave as if they’re in assault doctrine. So just a pip of ap.

The thing about the librarian dreadnought is that wings of sanguinius gives it temporarily the fly keyword which means you can get it into terrain

Baal Pred Overcharged engines would work if the Baal also came with 'Lucifier pattern stabilisers' or something which made all Heavy weapons Assault weapons when it advances. Also needs a rule where the turret weapon at least gets 'Rending' on unmodified 6s to Wound it gets AP-4.
Furioso Dread should be our Venerable, so WS and BS 2+ and Undying 6+ FNP. The Death Company Dread should therefore get a base 5+ FNP (with the stratagem Refusal to Die providing 4+ FNP), or T8 like the Ironclad. Both the Furioso and the DC Dread should be M8", or get Advance and Charge.
Tycho is dead and should just be removed from the Codex...Legends.

Whirlwind not only provides a table-wide-ranged Fight last but also denies Overwatch from any unit! That is why it is Tier 1 bordering on Sanguinary Tier for Blood Angels imo as it also provides a unit you do want at the back to hold backfield objectives and still effect the game in an obscured position.
Astorath needs the Wise Orator 2+ Litany ability for being a Master of Sanctity. The Master of Sanctity ability alone should come with the 2+ chant rather than the trait which should be tweaked.
Similarly Corbulo needs a Jump pack and free restores of the Selfless healer. Corbulo is THE apothecary of 40k, but he's outdone by everyone's homebrew Priests/Apothecaries.
It is a nice feeling that as a Blood Angels player we can finally think about squeezing in an Assault squad or two, but ideally I'd also want an Outrider Detachment option where if you take a Jump pack equipped HQ your Assault squads get Objective Secured and +1 Attack per model. As it is costing you not insignificant CP.
Not sure Servitors and Company Vets are Tier 2 anymore, used to be, not now in Nephilim. Not sure Intercessors are Tier 1, the Phobos ones are Tier 1 due to concealed positions and guerilla tactics however.
Key point on the Chaplains is that you need to spend a CP for Wise Orator triat to get the 2+ chants, bit annoying.
Would have been good to tier list the Stratagems too, even though Blood Angels don't have many good ones, but Angels Sacrifice as you mentioned is a key one. The Sanguinary Guard HI one is also very good.
No kidding about our dreads, really miss the 8" move and the extra 3" pile in/consolidate on the DC dread. Also how are they like the only dreads in the game minus Leviathan without core still is beyond me. Don't get me started on the Baal predator hahaha why GW just why.

Note, technically, both the Blood Chalice and the stratagem that allows you to put one unit into any doctrine only provide the benefits 'each time a model in that unit makes an attack'. This means that they can't declare the bonus attack from their super-doctrine, and only get bonus AP, as per RAW.
People usually aren't aware of that (Auspex Tactics definitely missed it here), and play as if the bonuses activated during the attack declaration step, before making the attacks, though.
I think this needs a clarification or errata.
The Codex Space Marines FAQ already clears this up:
CODEX SUPPLEMENT COMBAT DOCTRINE BONUSES
In each of the Space Marines Codex Supplements, you will find a
detachment ability that confers additional bonuses to units with
the Combat Doctrines ability while a particular doctrine is active
for your army (e.g. Scions of Guilliman in Codex Supplement:
Ultramarines, Savage Fury in Codex Supplement: Space
Wolves etc). Whenever a rule allows a unit to gain the bonus of a
particular doctrine even though it is not active for the rest of your
army (e.g. the Adaptive Strategy Stratagem, page 104), then whilst
that rule applies to that unit, that unit will also gain the benefit
from any such detachment ability.
@@kokevinny You are referring to the issue that got errataed a few months into the 9th edition when it wasn't clear if the relevant stratagem activated super-doctrines. That was a separate issue. It got fixed.
You have not read my post. The relevant super-doctrine does get activated, but it only becomes active when models are making attacks, i.e. after all the attacks are declared. BA super-doctrine gives them +1A, but, again, in this context it is activated too late.

Unless I am mistaken, when it comes to a Deepstrike charge don't you have to make a 9-inch charge due to the text specifying "more than 9 inches from an enemy model"? Then the closest you can get to an enemy model is 9.1 inches, meaning that you have to move 8.1 (have to round up) inches to be within engagement range.

you are correct - you have to deploy your troops 9" away from enemy models still. However, with the +1 to all charge rolls, you effectively only need to roll a 8 or higher to get in.
Well I just bought a combat patrol box ladt night as my first 40k miniatures so this is great timing!
drop pod is pretty nice for Death Company Dreadnought, but given that anything with jump packs has death from above so you can drop anyways just not round 1, its almost worth it to hold on to it until your round 2 or 3 mass drop counter charge
I actually do pretty well with a single squad of Supressors. I split fire them because the hit on 3"s from a board away and are bound to stop Overwatch from squads when I make a charge. Also I have one squad of Heavy Intercessors with hellfire bolt guns and play them midfield or executors from the back field and they're a solid Ob-sec and haven't failed me unlike my whirlwind(or dice)

I've always found it weird that we have the strat to let a psyker get one more cast, i understand lorewise why they're strong but fail to see it come into gameplay terms with how lackluster our powers are besides the wings and quickening combo

The Salamanders version of this video must take like 3 minutes. Quite astonishing the difference between support GWs favorite chapters get compared to the left overs.
Not surprising, blood angels used to have their own codex, while salamanders were just codex suppliment, it's not much to do with "favourites"
Blood angels are true space marine main faction. Even with papa smurf and wolves. They have flaw, they struggle, they fight and have best hawk boy as Father. even Blood ravens are their copy x).
I keep hearing about the Whirlwind, but not only are you paying a CP for that fights last, but shooting indirect, it’ll only go off in they score a hit on a 4+
And call me crazy but I’d rank Assault Marines over VanVets. Way cheaper with free upgrades - but they also don’t take an ever essential Elite slot

i've always wondered about how first born chapters are variously described as only 1000 strong but also significant battle field forces on a planetary scale. As I have read no novels, I wonder how authors get around this glaring anomaly. As for blood angels I suppose we'll have to wait for codex blood angels to see how their uniqueness carries over into the new squad types: can we get to see angel winged suppressors? does the perfection of the primarus gene preclude the worst defects of the blood-angels black rage?
It is also stated that 1 Space Marine is stronger than 1000 normal soldiers, he is a walking tank capable of destroying buildings and vehicles with his bare hands.
Of course 1000 almost immortal insanely experienced super powerful soldiers with the best wargear and weapons is a significant planetary force.
1 company (around 100 marines wity some vehicles) is capable of conquering planets.
It is a mistery to me how the sanguinary guard dropped by 2 points....

This was FAQd a good while ago. The unit counts as being in the assault doctrine and gains all benefits of that for the purposes of Savage Echoes.
Wrong reasoning, but correct conclusion. They do put units into Assault Doctrine, but only after all the attacks are declared, meaning that yeah, it's just bonus AP.

The ability to make them go off on a 2+ is from the warlord trait, the keyword lets them know and recite 1 more litanie
