    Last year I did the same thing last year, I purchased a Starcraft Alaskan 15, I ordered the Suzuki 25hp manual start for simplicity and I live and boat at 5000' in CO with me alone my 270LB boat hits 25MPH, I really love my motor!!! I've had 8 M/C's and my Suzuki was my favorite, they make the best stuff, you did good buddy!

      I wish I could have gotten the 30, but my transom being g for a 15 shaft prevents red that. The Alaska is a great boat ! I'm sure the 30 will do it justice

    Jeff, I will probably go with the 30. I have a friend who has a 40 on his and it sits way to ass heavy (230 LBS or 140 KG). I will build an aluminum adjustable jack plate that I have currently mocked up in cardboard. The issue people run into with the catamaran hull is the turbulence created by the sponsons and finding the sweet spot for the engine cavitation plate.There is a keel that runs down the center of the tunnel hull which I am sure was developed to provide more laminar flow to resolve cavitation problems created by the sponsons on cat boats. Ideally, I need to set the cavitation plate even with the bottom of the keel but there may be some fine tuning depending on the loading in the boat and sea conditions. Our water access is the Sailish Sea, Straits of Juan de Fuca, and the Pacific Ocean so the sea and weather conditions are continuously changing. I will utilize a 20" long shaft as when we get into a 4' to 6' swell off shore there is a tendency to have engine ride too high when cresting swells and cavitation results, so the engine needs to be set deeper for those conditions.Yep, there are a bunch of folks here who run skiffs off shore, just choose your weather carefully. It is about 12 to 15 miles across the straits to Canada and the sea state in the straits often mimics the ocean. The catamaran hull lends itself to incredible stability in these sea states. There are periods of time especially in the summer when high pressure sets in and this area is like a lake. Go at first light as the wind usually comes up after lunch and things change quickly. So, recognizing all the variances, it is probably a good idea to have more HP to get home. I have wrestled with this decision for awhile so thanks for your input as It confirms that the 20 is too small for my application. I enjoyed your video. Tim

      Thanks Tim, yes the Suzuki is very surprisingly powerful engine, that 3rd cylinder is key in our applications. I wish I had a cat to work with but up here in Upstate NY, I am basically only on lake and river water. Please see my other videos if you’d like to hear the Suzuki perform on the water. I have it on a 2019 Smokercraft V14 Voyager. Sounds like you need that power tilt and trim. Send me a link when you get her set up ! - Jeff

    Thanks for these videos of the 25hp Suzuki. Question: How did you lift it onto the transom? I’m considering the the 15” standard model weighing 136 lbs. I think i could handle it but just wondering how others do it. Thanks

    • @1minibean
      @1minibean  Před 4 lety

      I had to lift it by my self - I lifted it up straight from the box with the skeg on a pad so it didn't get scratched, then I opened up the clamps, then I bear hugged the motor and lifted it up and hung it on the transom. I don't recommend anyone to do this. Under the cowl, there is a lifting eye attached to the top of the motor, if you have any kind of overhead hoist or engine crane. Most of us don't. 2 guys to manhandle it is all you will need.

      I got my neighbor's two teenaged sons to help me lift the motor onto the transom. Once in place, I fine-tuned the mounting by placing a "Little Giant" - style ladder over the motor and suspending a come-along from the top of the ladder, hooking the come-along onto the eye hook on top of the motor. This allowed me to suspend and center the motor above the transom while fitting the wood onto my aluminum transom.

    Any particular reason you went with the 25 instead of the 30? I am trying to decide whether to set up my 13' fiberglass Livingston 350 pound hull (catamaran) which is rated for a 40hp, with a 20hp or 30hp. I like the efficiency and simplicity of the 20 @ 96 pounds. I am afraid I will be disappointed with the 20hp over all performance as opposed to the 30 @ 163 pounds. The 30 requires me to build and install a jack plate as the transom is too narrow to accommodate the larger mounting frame. Not a big deal, just one more step in the process of refitting this boat.I understand the 25 and 30 are the same engine with the electronic fuel injection adjusted for more HP on the 30. I would be curious to see your boats performance once the 25 is installed. Ironically the company you purchased the engine from is there same company I plan to purchase from. I have owned a Suzuki 115 HP in the past and it was the best. No more large boats for me. Simplicity is key these days. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Tim, Olympic Peninsula.

      @1minibean  Před 4 lety

      I agree 100% with you as I went through the same challenges. You will be disappointed in the 20 HP. It’s not enough grunt to push your boat the way you want. I went with the 25 for 2 reasons over the 30. First reason was I have a 15 inch transom, second reason is the difference in price. I bought the electric start model without power trim and it’s at 137 lbs I think it was. I wish I had got the power trim and 163 lbs because the extra weight isn’t anything, believe me. Please do your self the favor and look at the new Yamaha 40 before you buy the motor, only because on Boats.net, you will see this engine for $5349.00. It’s a absolute gem of an engine at that price, and the same or close to the Suzuki 30. You are correct on the 25 and 30 about the power, but the mounting holes are the same. The 25 Suzuki will move your craft quite nicely too. Please see my other videos on this motor on my boat as I have 5 I think with speed testing. Online outboards has exceptional service. I had it in 3 days to NY where I live.let me know if you have more questions. Thanks - Jeff

      Also, the Suzuki 30 only comes in 20 inch shaft, no 15 inch available for that engine. I have had great success with this Suzuki engine, and It is super quiet, and very fuel efficient. It has an 11 pitch prop and runs my boat with 2 adults and 1 kid at 29 -30 mph every time I use it. It will jerk them off the seat if they are not holding on when I hit the throttle even when I’m running full speed (3/4) throttle. There always seems to be that extra punch even at max. What a nice engine it it so far.

    One thing I noticed about my motor is that when I hook up the hose to the clam thing to flush no water comes out of the pee hole, however there is a little cap you remove to flush with the engine off which is OK but for oil changes it's a hassle filling up a trash can to submerge the cavitation plate, when You flush you motor with the clam thing could you tell me if yours does the same thing? Thanks so much, BTW if you have the common problem of the steering tensioner (on the tiller steering model) loosening up after a day of boating I found a cure, you need to tighten up the 12mm nut above the tensioner lever however it will just loosen up again, (frustrating) the fix is....wait for it... a drop of red thread lock permanently fixed the issue after you re-adjust the 12mm nut. I'm now on my 2nd season and have not had to address the issue!

    • @1minibean
      @1minibean  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I use the hose fitting side adapter that comes with the motor and it does come out the hole this way.

    • @1minibean
      @1minibean  Před 4 lety

      I've have never tried the muffs, so I don't know. I bet there is not enough pressure to push it out the pee hole with muffs, because as you can see with muffs, most of the water just sprays everywhere down low. With the fitting, I have actually used a pointed nose nozzle on my hose and it pumped it right out the pee hole instantly. Secondly - yes, my steering tensioner also loosens after 2 hours on the water.....I used blue permatex thread lock on mine and seems to be much better. That was a weak design I agree. Love my DF25. I will post a video when I do the ecu and restrictor plate mod.
