  • Growing up in the 2010s and the era of tumblr, infinity scarves and flower crowns, it's hard to not remember the influence Lana del rey had on the world and the internet when she first popped onto the scene with her viral self edited song "video games''. With her following album, Born to Die becoming an immediate international success. Lana del Rey's melancholic, vintage, dreamy aesthetic was and is very engaging & immersive and helped to garner her cult status relatively quickly. To many, del rey has come to mean so much more than just a celebrity or artist, but someone who has an irresistible air of mystique within her persona and her music .Her music has been noted by critics for its stylized cinematic quality; its preoccupation with themes of tragic romance, glamour, and melancholia; and its references to pop culture, particularly 1950s and 1960s Americana. All these factors help Lana to truly make a name for herself in the music world and American pop culture.
-Today I wanted to talk a bit about Lanas background and success before also explaining why I feel like she resonates the way she does with her fans, including myself.
Lana del Rey was born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant on June 21st 1985 in Lake Placid New York to parents Rob and Patricia Grant. Lana had a pretty quiet early life because of her towns seclusion and very small population. Around the ages of 14-15 she began to develop an alcohol dependency and she was sent to Kent boarding school to help become sober.
Lana has said quote "That's really why I got sent to boarding school -to get sober."
Lana has said she had a early preoccupation with mortality and the idea of death saying in a 2012 uk telegraph interview: quote
"When I was very young I was sort of floored by the fact that my mother and my father and everyone I knew was going to die one day, and myself too. I had a sort of a philosophical crisis. I couldn't believe that we were mortal. For some reason that knowledge sort of overshadowed my experience. I was unhappy for some time. I got into a lot of trouble. I used to drink a lot. That was a hard time in my life"
    - anyone who is hip to lanas unreleased canon can see the evidence of her rebellious and shock value tendencies like in the lyrics of the unreleased song Boarding school
When Lana left boarding school she eventually moved to Long island to live with her aunt and uncle while becoming a waitress. Lana eventually enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx, where she majored in philosophy with a big interest in metaphysics. Shes quoted as saying in a Rolling stone interview , "I chose to study the subject because it "bridged the gap between God and science... I was interested in God and how technology could bring us closer to finding out where we came from and why."
Meanwhile, she lived with boyfriends, and crashed on couches. "I was writing, writing, for years," she says. "Trying to figure out what I really wanted to say and why I was consumed with this passion for writing, where it came from. It kept me up all night. So I was waiting to see why. That was a really whole separate world."

Wow… i just gotta say, i’ve been a die-hard fan of all things Lana Del Rey since she first came into my life during *the* tumblr days, and i am absolutely blown away with what you created by blending your experiences with factual and informative storytelling to deliver such a powerful love letter to Lana and her work. on the subject of lana appealing to lgbtq people - as a femme lesbian, lana and her music really helped me realize and understand that being feminine and “delicate” and being a sort of hopeless romantic is okay. and that it’s not something you should feel ashamed of or try to hide. ❤

this!! Through the discovery of being a lesbian, trying to appeal more masculine to be validated as a lesbian is such a huge deal to so many people including myself. I, too, wanted to explore my feminine presenting side and feel delicate as well as strong and live those little movie moments that Lana sings about and we always see on screen but don’t feel like we can truly perform because of societal treatment and/or self-judgment/fear of “gayeing wrong.” It feels freeing to explore that side of myself while still being as much of a lesbian as ever!

knowing that she was mostly performing for friends in those club shows makes a lot of sense when she talks about having stage fright, cause she wasn’t performing for a lot of people before going on SNL…if you look at her performances from before that time she was singing very strangely, kind of bluesy, kind of off the cuff changing the melodies and doing weird pronunciations….she wasn’t used to singing her songs for lots of people or singing in a ‘normal’ way

  • @cutiexclub

Being a teenager discovering Lana really changed my life. Her early songs romanticised being sad and getting validation from guys, doing f-ed up things and feeling really cool about it, which to be fair was what I was also doing and I really related to it. I eventually grew up and matured, so did she. Her recent music is more about looking inwards, discovering and loving herself. Her new music also explores taboos and polarising topics. Not to mention she explores a lot of genres of music, and is not afraid to try new things and you just can’t get bored of her. It’s like we grew together and learned so much about life. I really enjoy her music, her artistry, her lyrics, her growth. Simply put, her music is really poetry, voiced by one of the best voice of this century. Just my two cents as someone who isn’t from the Americas, I haven’t experienced the culture so I can’t comment on that aspect. You put this together very eloquently, in a very captivating and enjoyable way. Thank you.

This video was so good. I feel like her willingness to be so emotionally vulnerable in her songs and not always have to pretend to be stronger or a better person that makes her music incredibly relatable. Like some people claim she romanticizes abusive relationships, drugs and alcohol, and depression, but those are realities a lot of people have had to cope with and it feels good to be validated.

Lana was to music in the early 2010s what Kate Bush was to it in the late 70s and early 80s... Like the latter, she birthed a whole generation of new musicians to whom she showed there's an alternative way of making music... she changed the entire landscape and even established and mainstream pop stars borrowed elements from her (you know when Lady Gaga fans make those 'pop stars before gaga and pop stars after gaga' collages? Lana sort of did the same... in a way she de-gag-ified the landscape lmao). And just like Kate, she was controversial without trying. Both are introverted and a bit reclusive yet inherently provocative by just being themselves... Such global cultural treasures that we should never cease to cherish

Alot of people I think under estimate Lana(Lizzy) because of her looks, aesthetic and stage presence. She's portrayed by critics as this "bimbo" type but beneath the surface she's a thinker. Just watching this video and reading articles about her you can tell her mind is a powerful thing. She's poetic and philosophical. It's a tragedy that great women thinkers are overlooked and underestimated due to the same reasons great male thinkers are praised. In association with drinking and sex men are viewed as lively and well lived whereas women are viewed as cheap and worthless.

Something about Lana feels like an Old Hollywood star Like Elizabeth Taylor Eva Gardner or Audrey Kathleen you know Glamoruous Elegant and Beauty. Songs like National athem, West cost, Florida kilos, Ride, etc makes me felt a strange nostalgic feeling for something I've never live. even the way she mades cameos to American pop personalities Like Elvis and Marilyn or even female poets like Silvia Plath just made her sounds a lil bit more more especial And I sure Lana Del rey will rember as one of the biggest American pop culture Icons.

Lana was fundamental for my adolescence. Her music comforted me in ways no person ever did during those times. She helped me cry and taught me to take my time and understand my pain, find beauty in it, make the best of it even. Her Lizzy Grant and Sparkle Jump Rope Queen era were awesome too, and the May Jailer album was beautiful! unfortunately they are underrated and mostly underground 🫤

The best video on Lana I've seen, I love how you focus a lot on her early/unreleased music and I totally relate to you in that listening to Lana really helped me to romanticize my life more (especially as someone who was born in Florida but now lives in New Jersey lol, love her unreleased songs where she mentions the Jersey shore). Also, your editing style is amazinggggg!

This is an amazing and well done video. Just like you I started listening to Lana Del Rey back in 2013, and I feel privileged to grow along with Lana. Her entire discography had a huge impact on me, and I’m still in awe at how brilliant Ocean Blvd is, lyrically and musically. One of the main reasons as to why I love her is because her story can be so relatable sometimes and I think you conveyed her story beautifully in this video. Once again, well done ❤

SO WELL DONE, should be required viewing, thankful the algorithm sent this my way! I was a huge LDR stan when I worked in the music industry, got laid off off around 2017 and was casually observing pop music from afar. Her…questionable statements during the pandemic left me wondering what kind of integrity she had left and if she’s even worth stanning anymore. Your experience perfectly captures why her base is so strong and I wouldn’t have gotten this perspective from anywhere else - and I listen to a LOT of pop podcasts! Thanks for your contribution!

  • @christina5kids16grands
    @christina5kids16grands Před 11 měsíci +2

This is SO thorough, thoughful, insightful, and creative! You shared the LDR story, but also included your own personal pain and why you embraced her music. I'm so glad you were comforted by her music. I've never even knew who she was until I saw she'd done a collab with Taylor Swift (as small as it was..although it sounds like that song is being re-recorded with her being more included), and I had to come find out about her. I saw a live performance done by her recently, and that concert totally confused me. It was in Brazil, and she has a LOTTTT of obsessed fans there!
