  • The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is a (sub)compact crossover with a big chest of off-road features. Do the G.O.A.T. modes really matter? Or is this just another mall crawler with aspirations to greatness? In this video Ryan tests the Bronco Sport First Edition with a 2-liter Turbo engine, by climbing mountains, driving roads, testing the 0-60, economy and then how well it can handle deep, late-season snow in the Cascade Mountains. It's a Bronco Sport adventure like none-other.

    The Snow Climb, for people who are not used to driving in snow, once you spin out you are basically creating ice below your tire. Starting from the spin out won't work unless you have studded or very aggressive tread. You have to back up and get a small run to get past the smooth icy spot you made, or back up and take a path that gets fresh snow under your tires.
    Same thing happens when you spin out on a snowmobile.

    @CarGroves Před 3 lety +14

    A couple of gripes about your very well shot and edited video. 1) 6.5 0-60 in a 4x4 suv in this segment is pretty fast. Trail Edition 4runner is 7.9 2) The 4runner didn't do any better through your uphill ice bowl, you just hit it at a faster speed, which if you off-road much, helps a ton. Speed is king.

    • @donnie90000
      @donnie90000 Před 2 lety +2

      I agree! You just spoke my mind. It’s a great video!! But, this vehicles capability on computers and non standard mechanical 4x4 and ‘slightly’ less approach angle, is just almost at par with the 4runner. Almost coz of lesser articulation and super low gearing, otherwise, its PRETTY good for most ‘non rock crawly’ trails!

    • @jak3est
      @jak3est Před rokem +4

      Ikr it literally made it up to where even the 4runner trd got stuck. Only bronco had no settings on and he never added power to the 1mph trail control. That is an unfair comparison if he just drove up it at a real life speed in snow setting he wouldn't have gotten stuck

If a car is cramped, if it is noisy, if the seats are uncomfortable, if it demands a high level of concentration to keep it centered it can make for a grueling 8-9 9hours. I'm impressed by this little crossover. I wish this thing was available last year when I bought my Tacoma. I originally had my heart set on a Forester but after watching your channel and TFL I ultimately decided on the truck because I was concerned that the Subaru wouldn't be capable enough. After seeing this Bronco, I hope the new Maverick pickup has similar levels of capability.

      @@jcoats5529 Of course. Comparing a body-on-frame truck to a crossover is apples to oranges really. However, keep in mind this Bronco Sport 1st Edition is worth over $40K! which is definitely within the price range of a 4x4 Tacoma. At the end of the day, I feel I made the right decision to purchase a truck. It has more capability than I probably need plus having a bed is super useful. Do I wish it had better fuel economy and was easier to park? Sure, but had to compromise somewhere

      @@Honeybadger_525 Not everyone needs a truck, me for example. Everyone I know has a truck. And they are just a phone tap away. I prefer my Jeep. I'm into jeeps and 4-wheel drive. A jeep will eat the bronco alive in almost every conceivable way. That's why you never see broncos rock crawling or trying to follow a jeep. Structurally everything on the jeep is thicker, heavier, and better built. Tyrod's are like chopsticks on the Bronco. The jeep has a 6-cylinder Diesel motor, turbo charged, locking rear differentials. Slip control, #4 snow ,sand, wet and mud settings. And all of this under $50K . I'll take the Wrangler 4 door. But to each their own. But with a jeep wrangler, you won't be walking home. Mine will climb a tree. And twice the storage area as the Bronco. They look big they aren't, inside, cramped actually. Smaller than you would ever dream. Tight compared to the jeep. And the jeep gets a lot better milage to boot. And the turbo diesel is a beast. Peace.

      Don't be fooled by great advertising. The sport is a 3 cylinder, he has a #1 of a kind bronco. It cost a lot more than $31.000. All sports are #3 cylinders except the Badlands model. Which starts off with a 4 cylinder. Standard. They cost more too. The sport doesn't have a #1-piece frame. And everything under it isn't made for off road driving. Inside is cramped like he said. Sports run up to $45 k. For $31 k I can get a 6-cylinder 4 door jeep. For 43k I can get the jeep sport x and a 6-cylinder diesel turbo charged Beast. This was on my shortlist when I was car shopping, but the smaller backseat/cargo area didn’t fit my needs as well as others. I am also always hesitant getting anything in its first model year. That said, this is a very impressive piece of kit that I’m sure many enthusiasts will love and will prove to be a very popular vehicle in the compact off-road community. It has more capability than I will ever need since I’m just going to be dealing with some snow and a fire road or two in the mountains.
    At the end of the day though, I ended up ordering a Forester Sport, especially after your glowing review and x-mode demonstration.

    Great review! Thanks for pushing it a bit, it performed considerably better than I thought it would. I figured it was an Escape with some aesthetic cladding, it appears that's not the case.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 2 lety

      Its still based on the Escape, but with a more refined and aggressive AWD system with somewhat better clutches for more bite for power transfer front to rear and the twin clutch rear adds to the traction capabilities as well which the Escape doesn't have...probably could swap rear drive units to give an Escape that feature if you wanted though.

    I’ve already decided that this will be my next car. I’m planning on getting one this year, replacing my last car of 14 years! I would go with the regular Bronco, but seeing as how I do a lot of city driving and commuting, I think the Sport is going to be much more comfortable and more economical on the commute. It’s definitely a much better balance.

      That is how I felt when I bought mine. It is a better easier daily driver than some other options. Yet it seems to have so much capability that I find myself thinking of 30”-31” WildPeak tires one month after having bought my Badlands Sport to give it more ground clearance (guessing 9.8”-10.8” ground clearance respectively) given it seems ground clearance is the limiting factor on off-road capability for this car. Even without a low gear box, it seems quite capable of most all off-roading, except most extreme rock crawling/off-roading. That is my first impression one month into it. I am concerned bigger wheels will change driving dynamics on a daily basis, though. It is a catch 22.

    Nice review overall! Love the testing and throughouness - huge fan of this little thing. Those floor mats do slide around a lot since the floor is rubber, though shocked Ford doesn’t have little plastic fasteners to keep them in place. Lack of some common features is disappointing, but this little thing looks impressive!

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 2 lety +1

      I'd take those floor mats and throw them in the trash, totally defeats the purpose of having a rubberized non-carpeted floor...and can cause the accelerator pedal sticking issue that Toyota had from floor mats getting bunched up under the pedal causing it to get stuck.
      Good to know the floor mats sliding around is still an issue in vehicles 30+ years newer than my Bronco 2 and Ranger though HAHA!!!!!

    • @omarayala1820
      @omarayala1820 Před rokem

      The Badlands with rubber mats has a perfect fit that does not move an inch over the rubber non-carpet floor. My car detailer complimented the rubber floor and rubber mats on the first wash of the vehicle. Even asked me to get them for my Land Rover, which has rubber mats witch clip holders 😮. I guess he meant to add rubber non-carpeted floor below the rubber mats. 😊 Anyways, the rubber mats on top of rubber non-carpeted floors n the Bronco Sport excel in my experience & opinion.

      Comparison to a Land Rover Discovery Turbo Diesel V6 and some of the cars in your list. Hope it helps: I bought a Badlands one month ago. I test drove a RAV4 TRD, a RAV4 hybrid, and a 4Runner 2x4 on freeway. Bronco Sport superior to RAV4 TRD and similar to RAV4 Hybrid in road performance and acceleration and cabin insulation and refined ride quality on short freeway segment. Bronco Sport seemed to have better acceleration and better suspension over road cracks on rear axle than 4Runner. I have not tried any of the other cars in your list and cannot opine or help you with those.
      I do have a 2018 Land Rover Discovery Diesel V6 which is perfect for family outings and adventure and has all desirable off-road and on-road capabilities. It is probably “The Gold Standard” for SUV’s, period. Having the Discovery as my daily driver since 2018 is what probably sold me on the Bronco Sport. It feels so, so much like a smaller budget version of the Land Rover Discovery both on-road and off-road. It is not as competent on either extreme on-road, nor off-road driving. But it feels as a mini-me budget version both on-road and off-road. The Toyota RAV4 TRD not even close. It might be more reliable long term, but the experience is not even comparable to drive. The RAV4 Hybrid is very refined on-road. Compares on drive quality to Bronco Sport but has on-road tires and it seems highly specialized on-road. The RAV4 Prime seems to have programming similar to my Porsche Cayenne eHybrid, but I could not drive it, so I cannot opine on ride quality, but its philosophy seems intriguing for on-road. I do not know off-road. I know my Porsche Cayenne eHybrid has impressive towing and off-road capabilities except water fording which is significantly hampered by the eHybrid system compared to the regular Cayenne. I wonder what is the case for Toyota Primes and water fording, if that is important to you.
      In summary, I feel and think that Bronco Sport Badlands feels like a small, budget Land Rover Discovery Turbo Diesel V6 that excels in mid-range on-road & off-road performance scoring just below a Land Rover on these mid-range situations. It has similar mpg performance compared to the Diesel V6. I think BS is better in city, Discovery Diesel is better on highway. Diesel is cheaper than Premium, which I chose to use on BS for better performance and engine noise and economy. All and all Diesel might be a little better but it is not apple to oranges. Did you buy any, yet? Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Regarding your snow action, keep in mind AT aren't really all terrain tires. I'm wondering if snow tires or ice tires would have changed its performance on that hill.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 2 lety

      A dedicated snow tire would make a difference, but so would not stopping while trying to navigate up that rutted out hill...in the video he's testing to see what the system can and can't do, but anyone with a brain would simply just keep moving and not stop in the middle of a snow/ice covered hill LOL. Tires would make a difference, and keeping up the forward movement of the vehicle in normal driving of course would make a huge difference as well. Those tires that come on the Bronco Sport from the factory are a slightly more aggressive street tire with a snow rating. A true set of snow/ice tires like Bridgestone Blizzaks with studs would make a huge difference, much softer rubber compound and the studs to bite through the ice that's under that snow.

    I NEED AN ASSIST:
    I've been wanting this vehicle since I heard of it coming out back in Sept. My wife is against my choice, because she wants more room in the back seats for our reverse carseat and my daughter's booster with a wide base AND enough room for our two small dogs in the middle section.
    While the back seat is lacking this vehicle still checks all the boxes for our off road camping trips and beach runs and it is affordable for our budget.
    What I need an assist on is convincing her that this is a good buy. I'm also willing to make a box to extend the rear seats' mid section out more to create a platform for the dogs if necessary. It would come up to the center console and give the dogs more room to lay down. It's an easy project to do with plywood and black felt imo.

Most dealerships in America doing that got in big trouble because it voids safety warranties meaning the dealership is responsible for all claims. Not to argue, the Xterra has that back-seat head space (i still have my 2000). The roof lifts up and give the rider an extra 3 or 4 inches of head space. The seat is higher than the front seats also, giving that stadium seating effect. I dont know if it would be considered in the same class as the Sport, but i think so because the Xterra is not gigantic like the full sized Bronco. I'm finally thinking of getting a new vehicle and every day i research, the Bronco sport looks like it is going to win. Thank you for your review!
