It's not just Berkey - Betrayed by AlexaPure, AquaCera, ProOne/ProPur, PureWell....

  • After I did the Betrayed by Berkey video, I wanted to find out if there were a filter I could use in the old Berkey stainless steel containers to replace the Black Berkey elements I no longer trusted. This would be my "ditch water" filter for microbes and pathogens. Well...I found it!

Here's a swamp water drink test I did with it: • I Drank a Glass of Dir...
But, dang. It's not just Berkey being deceptive.
The ones I named in the title of this video strike me as deceptive. I also talk about some others in the video that may or may not be outright deceptive, maybe just shoddy. Either way, I am not going to buy any of these for filtering out chemicals from house water nor pathogens from ditch water:
    AlexaPure
    Gravity Well
    JoyPur
    ProPur/ProOne
    PureWell
    WaterDrop
    ZenWater
    Outback Water
    AquaRain
AquaCera* - I've learned a little more about AquaCera, and I cannot tell if they are just shoddy or if they're deceptive. Either way, their test results and advertising leave much to be desired - it's unclear.
I also talk about Mike Adams, the "Health Ranger," and his test on water filters - it was either deceptive, shoddy, or both. Here's the link I mention: stpaulmercanti.... I've also seen his other video about AlexaPure and glyphosate, and still, he does not test to the advertised life/service cycle of the filter, so the results don't mean anything in the long run.

*NO information on Fluoride removal - I've included it because Dr. Knappe said he uses it in his home, it filters PFAS, and it's affordable
    Pour-through pitchers and dispensers:
    ZeroWater - amzn.to/3SVQr4l
*IS tested, though NOT certified, to remove Fluoride
*Note* about ZeroWater: I recently learned that ConsumerLab.com found high levels of microplastics added to ZW filtered water. They said it could be that the filter needs have water run through it 4x and then the reservoir cleaned before drinking. They also noted that ZeroWater is particularly good at filtering Arsenic, so if that is a concerned with your water, they still recommended using it even with the microplastic issue. My conclusion is still consider using it, but make sure you flush it 4x and then clean and rinse the reservoir thoroughly. I wish all of these companies would quit with plastic and use stainless steel or sturdy glass, but, alas!
    Clearly Filtered - amzn.to/3CTuy02
*IS tested, though NOT certified, to remove Fluoride

When I made this video, I seriously thought maybe a couple of hundred people would watch it, and I felt uncomfortable trying to make money off of it. More people watched it, and I still kind of feel uncomfortable with monetizing - I posted a video about it - • Should I monetize my Y... . But, I decided that as long as I tell the truth, am as transparent as I can reasonably be, don't hurry, and have people in my life holding me accountable, then it's okay to make some money off of my labor. It's not much money (thus far) compared to how much you need to actually buy food, fuel, etc to live. But every little bit helps!
    ...
REPLACE your filters on time according to how much water you use. Remember to do it! They are virtually useless if they go much past their life/service cycle. Yes, it is merely an estimate, YMMV depending on your water quality, but it's the best most of us consumers can do unless we frequently pay to test our water. However you choose to time your replacements: Set reminders for yourself and change the filters!

I'm getting the impression from these videos that all these companies are buying generic cheap filters and then just jacking the price up. So Berkey probably wouldn't be an issue if we just replace the filters more often. But the problem is their filters are extremely expensive for generic filters.
So is the solution then to buy a generic, cheap gravity fed or under sink system and then just buy and replace cheap carbon filters often?
Also, you shouldn't care about that one woman who was going on about not liking longer content. Water is an important topic, the more details the better.

Check out the CWC Labs video on testing water filtration systems for glyphosate.... they tested the berkey and other systems.....they found that Zero pitcher water filter worked 100% filtered glyphosate. If you are looking for a cheaper option....try Zero pitcher filter. If it can filter a water soluble chemical it can filter most of the other chemicals you might be concerned about. We got them due to the claim of fluoride removal and back then there were nearly none who claimed fluoride removal. We live in Hawai'i now and brought the tanks with us. Now we don't pay extra for the fluoride filter because Hawaii is smart and doesn't put fluoride sludge in the drinking water. But all I found crickets in,seem to proudly list and boast their food has crickets. I did find one company that listed the bugs scientific name in ingredients instead of "cricket flour" but that's on you if you buy something without researching ingredients. The biggest problem I have is carmine red,red # 40? that has been used for decades in many sweets and foods, yet never labeled as coming from crushed bugs.I don't think I will be reading too much more Mike Adam's as he seems to be joining the "fear mongering" community. Seriously, if you claim they are SNEAKING bugs into our food, at least have lab tests showing they found bugs in the foods that were not listed on the label. I save crickets from drowning in outside dog and cat water bowls of animals I rescue and watch over, so no way in hell I will be eating crickets or any other bugs.I sure do want to know of any and all products that contain any bug so I can avoid them completely, but can't just take someone's word for it, not even Mike Adams.

You have to understand, when a lab tests to 200 gallons, that means the amount of water they ran threw the filter for that test, NOT that the filter was done and couldnt filter any more.
If the claim is that it will filter up to 3000 gallons, it may only clean 2000 gallons if the water was exceptionally bad. If you ran pristine distilled water through it, it would never need to be replaced. Manufacturers recommend time based intervals because components in some filters are time sensitive, like activated charcoal.

Pure copper is another to look into…although, too much copper has been said to create ill-effects. I would also look into pure gold just to research.

Safest drinking/cooking water strategy revolves around reverse osmosis systems, then additional water treatments.
We use RO in the lab and test the results personally. The commercial gravity filters have their value, but primarily only a pre-filter.
RO doesn't remove some impurities (dissolved gases e.g., hydrogen sulfide, some smells e.g. rotten egg odor.
And more importantly, some pesticides, solvents and volatile organic chemicals.
So after pre-filter and RO, we test for impurities, then devise additional water treatments to suit the objectives.
But if after pre-filter and RO treatments, if testing reveals additional, non-removables...,
we usually don't use that water. It's quicker and cheaper to pass and just go get water that RO is effective making acceptable, passing all tests.

I have news for everyone: all purifiers don’t filter as long as they claim, and they don’t filter as much as you like. But then again your tap water is likelier shittier and you survive. The point is that these purifiers are still a good thing for prepper survival. I would buy not buy them for everyday use. It is futile to take contaminants out of tap water and still have a retirement savings. Short term survival is the only place where these costly so-so purifiers can help. And even then I would still boil it.

Robert, I learned an early lesson involving politics. It's called 'the brick wall'. Looks like you're running into the same thing with a class of merchant that has an unwritten (or mebbe a written) rule about advertising. Nobody rocks the boat and all sail on unmolested. You used to see something similar in yellow page advertising. The plumbers, for instance would, most of 'em, would all buy the same size ad. Then one day a new jackleg outfit would come along and buy a BIGGER ad which would force the others to follow suit. Get what I'm saying? They'd leave well enough alone as long as possible. That's what I'm seeing after viewing your sterling but unrewarded work.
Early this summer using 5 gallon buckets I made a water thingy using the device with the best claim of all...the Sawyer. Luckily the water source that would be put into use here is an eternally flowing nearby underground waterway with good water even before it's filtered. Again I commend you for your super work. It really shouldn't fall to you to have to step in and do the work others are PAID to do.

Thanks for your research and hard work. What a murky world water filtration is. I recently purchased a waterdrop lucid pitcher which I watched a youtuber get lab results on. It's supposed to only be good for roughly 200 gallons but water definitely tastes better and the results were good. I came to the conclusion that I may aswell buy lots of new pitcher filters instead of buying an expensive water filter that probably lasts the same amount of time.
I think that there needs to be a fresh lab test done on each filter so that we know the truth and everybody should stop buying them until then.
Many years ago I worked for a filtration company called Pall Filtration and they did lots of beverage filters. I don't know why I don't hear that name mentioned ever.

I appreciate your videos. As a result of the Berkey vid, we're not buying one. We MAY install an RO unit. Or not. For now--and maybe indefinitely--we get RO water from nearby grocery stores. 25 to 35 cents/gallon. Yes, you have to haul it, but we go to these stores anyway to buy food, so it's not a major inconvenience. We use RO water for drinking and making coffee, tea, etc. and use a Pur pitcher with the lead reduction filter for water for cooking.

    • @_JustinCase_
      @_JustinCase_ Před rokem

The issue I have with store produced RO water is, who's maintaining the system? That's a critical aspect of RO purifiers and I guess my trust ends there. I know you can't just remove the initial cost of say, a AquaTru countertop RO device, but if you do and only calculate the cost of replacement filters, the per gallon price is less than 10¢. I look at the initial cost for the device like a one time expense for any other "kitchen" item (i.e. coffee maker, mixer, toaster oven, etc.). If you use the cost of a KitchenAid mixer to get the average unit price of a baked cake... you get the idea. 😉

I inverted it on top of a 5 gallon bottle and filter through that. The filter seemed to work well for about two weeks. Then needed to be flushed more and more. I smell chlorine in the water so I'm not sure it's doing much. I've only ran tap water through it. I noticed Sawyer and Lifestraw both list that massive amounts of water can be filtered. Reading the fine print this applies only to tap water and not the outdoor water their adds promote.

The 7" Doulton/Berkfeld elements work just fine in a Berkey (as far as size). I've read they fail the red dye test, but many filters do, I'm only filtering well/rain water mainly and I'm probably reasonably safe from nonsense like hexavalent chromium and the like where I am, I'm more worried about bacteria - the Superstearasyl filters will accomplish that just fine.
If you want the purest water then you want an RO system or buy a distilling system (though I'd still recommend filtering water before the distiller just to get the bulk of impurities out).
