  • (www.TFLoffroad.com) The 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country is aimed to be a compelling, dirt-worthy alternative to a crossover - even those from the Swedish brand's own lineup. With a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, can this wagon make it to the top of Tombstone Hill?

    As the owner of a V90 Cross Country, I’m going to say that people don’t buy these to go off road. They are bought to make it up into the mountains to the trails, through snow, mud, whatever, and to be incredibly comfortable and efficient on the highway getting there (which it is). I know the older ones were meant as SUV alternatives, but once SUVs started coming out of Europe, all of these “active” wagons were moved a bit up-market and seem to be more meant to appeal to “car guys”. As had one of the original A6 Allroads and that car was much more off roadable than my Cross Country, but the Cross Country is way more comfortable and just as off roadable (by that I mean not all that off roadable) as the Audi Allroads or the Mercedes equivalent (maybe the Mercedes is a bit more off roadable). Totally enjoyed the review, but would even think of taking my Cross Country beyond a bumpy dirt or gravel road or an unplowed street.

      Another V90CC owner here and I am the rare owner that isn't afraid to (respectfully) beat the ever-living crap out of it. They definitely aren't as rugged as they used to be, but i've never had close to any issues on any of the loose sand, deep mud, rough rocky "roads" I sometimes end up finding myself on. I came from Subaru and expected more of a difference between the Haldex and their AWD system, and there's certainly a different feel to it. The haldex just needs the driver to trust it a little more than Subaru's and it'll keep up pace. Are the V90CC and V60CC designed and built for these tests? nah, not really, but if they can do it, why not?

      agreed, i have an XC70 T6 AWD, turning off the DSTC or changing it to Sport DSTC mode is the only way to do difficult offroad things. it will still brake the wheels feely spinning but it wont limit engine output.. also in my experience wont cook transmission like having DSTC enabled and unable to move basically locked in place. not sure what is happening to cause trans to get so hot with DSTC enabled i suspect its that holding like 3-4 grand constantly as soft limit sets in for DSTC and ad just perched in a spot like that it doesn't have enough power when brakes are locked like that so its siting on clutch packs ripping them apart maybe? but with wheels spinning, never had trans over heat waning..
      tires are another thing to consider, obviously. all season wont have enough bite. my XC70 has similar ground clearance, i think 8.5 inches and im pretty sure with falken wildpeak tires my wagon would climbed that no issue with DSTC enabled.. on the all season verde/scorpion tires i would absolutely need to disable DSTC to make it with all that wheel spin. infact im running wildpeaks right now and im am amazed how good these tires off for tricky loose terrain, also decent for snow!

Besides how comfortable and smooth the ride is, it's actually somewhat fun to drive (once you get it up to speed) ...I was a little spoiled - had an AudiS3 that was modified to get 400hp - but the best part about it is that not everyone has one. Its low, stealthy, somewhat sexy and yes a wagon - so you can tote 8 industrial size packages of T.P. ... which came in handy during the pandemic shortage!

    Yes. Nobody expects this Volvo to compete off road with your project truck - old Ford Diesel Smokey which just walked uphill and downhill with no drama.

    There is no oil pan to puncture as the car has a protective plate/cover underneath. you have to apply some drive otherwise you are wasting your time!

    It got hot because you were too gentle and did not allow it to go. You had a dealership demo and were afraid to hurt it because you would have to pay.

    You really need to learn to stop hooking your thumbs around the steering wheel like that while driving off road, a tire could go into a hole and quickly turn the wheel and screw up or jamb your thumb.

    Not bad but not great either i feel if you wanted more Off road worthyness you upgrade to a X60. The cross country isnt what it use to be cause most wagons dont sell anymore its all about SUV and CUV for the mass portion of the demand. Still a good looking vehicle though.

      The question is would the XC60 truly be any better. Other than the optional T6 drivetrain for gas engines and likely tires, transmission and awd are the same between the two.

  • @Colin623
    @Colin623 Před rokem

    If you want to go full off driving buy a full off road vehicle, risking such terrain in a soft roader is asking for trouble, to start with it doesn't have the right tires or ground clearance, plus you will find the guarantee will be scuppered, not the best of ideas, all you achieved was to put even more stress on the drivetrain having to creep up that climb causing the car to stop on multiple occasions, so in short that should of told you you were risking damage not only to the underside but also the gearbox.

    • @CarThings___

    • @weedmastersr

      They do if you turn off traction control, which Tommy is not doing for some reason.

    • @CarThings___
      @CarThings___ Před 3 lety

      A lot of cars do better with traction control off on roller tests, they should try turning it off when a car is struggling

  • @weedmastersr
    @weedmastersr Před 3 lety +2

    With some taller off-road tires and with the traction control turned off, this would've done all portions of the course without issue.
