  • I've noticed a lot of my friends have stopped playing Snap and.. I can understand why. I've also been slowly losing interest for a variety of reasons so today I'm going to breakdown some of the feelings I've had with Snap.

Great video. I think you did a great job representing many people's feelings about the game. In my experience, videos like this are rarely "CZcams suicide" as you put it. People love to know someone is looking out for them.
I think Marvel Snap's biggest problem is that it's most fun when you don't play a ton, but the economy demands you play a ton to keep up. If you want to spend money to help keep up while playing less, too bad, they make spending feel terrible.
So that model just excludes a lot of people from the optimal experience with the game.
They need new ways to play that make it feel better to play more, or they need to make spending feel better.

The least fun i ever had was hitting Infinite super early this season (day 2 I think). Normally I had something to chase all season. This season was completely demotivating, and I think Conquest is a TRASH TIER mode, so what was the point in playing.
Fortunately, this is a good season for homebrew to be competitive. But when you get oppressive lockdown meta's or other overturned periods it feels pointless to paly as you are just (no offense to creators) playing people who just copy and paste creator decks with no creativity of their own, '"because they win".

The monetization has made playing the game a lot less fun because there's no sense of progress. Any rewards I earn don't actually build to anything due to the wildly inflated prices. I still enjoy the core game, but trying to get new cards or even variants of any kind feels like a chore.

If it wasn't for you and the other youtubers that I follow, I would've stopped a while ago. You have a way of presenting this game that makes it very entertaining for me to be a part of. I thank you for it. @williammclean6594 Před měsícem +1

I'm still enjoying it because I love card games but with how expensive even the most basic offer is it makes it really hard to keep up since they don't give you any new cards. All the new cards are super expensive and if you screw up on a spot like cash because the card didn't turn out to be good, you're screwed for at least a couple months

    • @Kogelvis
      @Kogelvis Před měsícem +2

You’re shocked that playing the same game every day for 18 months got boring?

    • @tom2point0
      @tom2point0 Před měsícem +1

The unfamiliar characters will continue because they release new cards WAY TOO OFTEN now. A new character every week is 52 characters/cards a year. That’s not counting those times when we get two new cards a week too. Just wait till we get Ms. Lion from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends as a card! Exciting? Or even better, how about Paul?
At some point, it just becomes less feasible to keep releasing cards at that rate (and all at series 5 likely the way they’re going). You have to come up with unique abilities and you have to play test those abilities against the whole deck to be sure interactions work correctly and aren’t busted. It’s going to get harder and harder to do that.
A new card every two weeks is a better rate and would make it easier to collect, and help sustainability and still allow for meta changes just not as often. The weekly changes are way too quick IMO.

My CL is 15,691. I have been playing since they had a beta in only a few countries. Theres one word for me that summarizes Marvel Snap, Stingy. Even grinding out to get new cards feels like a chore because the systems they have currently are a GRIND and even when you do grind its still never enough. Id love to see some more game modes and id love to see more ways to get various currency keys, gold, credit and boosters. Like alot of people are paying them 10 dollars a month we should see some trickle down in the economy. The 100 dollar cosmetics are dumb but im sure some people buy em. I would of loved to see more free emotes too like maybe they have a freebie emote you get to pick once a month between 3 random emotes. Yup. 12k CL, played since day 1 launch. I feel about the same. It took me 5 and half months to become series 3 complete and that was when I spent all my gold on credits and missions to level my CL as fast as possible. Back when we got LOADS of gold every week just from playing. Now I'm lucky if I get enough gold for a variant every 1.5 weeks. Personal choice since gold bundles are too expensive to grind for and they dont tell us in advance enough which bundles are coming out. I prefer the instant gratification of getting variants. But anyway, yeah I can't imagine how it is being a new player.. its must take longer to becomes series 3 complete now! Dure they get series 4 and 5 cards faster... but the bulk of most decks are series 3 cards. At this point they may as well just give everyone series 3 complete the moment they finish the "tutorial" section of the pool 1 and 2 cards.

Its good to voice these opinions, I think we see them a lot from players but less so from creators so it's nice to see my own feelings around the game be represented here in what you had to say. Snap has a great game concept but it has gotten a bit stale with time, and as such my time with the game, spending habits, and content creation have all decreased pretty significantly.
Their monetization push would def be a lot more palatable if we saw other meaningful things being added to the game, but it feels like outside of some customization stuff the game hasn't grown much. I hope they find a way to bring some life back into the community, because due to the structure of this games progression once creators start leaving (and a few already have) it seems harder for people to fill that void compared to other games. I’m still enjoying the game, but I think I’m on a very similar page as you. The time I’m spending in the game is way lower than it has been since I started.
I don’t have the energy or enthusiasm for lots of Conquest anymore. Post-Infinite Ranked is pretty boring. That leaves me playing once or twice a day to knock out missions - which is when the game starts to feel like a chore. I used to play so much (because the game was fun!) that I’d finish most missions incidentally.
Hard to put my finger on “what’s wrong”, but I think you nailed a lot of it. We get balance changes 3 out of every 4 weeks, but they make such little impact that they’re mostly not exciting. Cards are so expensive that it feels like being punished when you buy a card that turns out to be weak or boring.

Spotlight keys are also rare enough that I will not spend them unless there´s at least 2 cards that I want, and when I pull one of them, I will not risk pulling for the other.

But the monetization just made it nearly unplayable. The natural way of getting cards means there will almost always be two cards released for every one new card you get without spending money on extra credits. Impossible to catch up and you’re never guaranteed a good card. I just started playing again bc of a friend getting into it but I’m already feeling the fatigue.

Every patch is riddled with bugs, the spotlights are a potential punishing dice roll every week, resources are too hard to come by, and series drops are almost non existent ( 1 or 2 per year is nowhere near enough).
The removal of the future spotlights and bundles from the data mines is another thing that doesn't sit right with me either. Having no agency or the ability to make plans for the future releases (along with everything else you've touched on) has diminished my interest in this game to the lowest it's ever been.

Balancing games like this is very difficult another game similar was Dragon Quest Rivals in Japan. They had to go to a playset of 2 instead of 1 to help that game live another 4 years.
So we've seen things like that happen before, if second dinner isn't willing to up playsets only true way to balance this game is to add choice restrictions. For players who don't know what this is, if you put card A into a deck you can't have card B and viscera. Example can be if you have sunspot in a deck you can't have nebula, this feels like it'd be an easy answer to the dry meta. Also releasing cards in series 5 constantly is hurting this game alot their 52 series 5 cards from now to July as series 4 is at 24.

We love how transparent and real you are Drew. All the points you made are incredibly valid. I stopped playing cause I was getting incredibly bored. There hadn't been new content for months. It's year two and they STILL only have two game modes with no new ones teased in the roadmap. They said clans is coming but I have this feeling it'll just end up feeling as boring and repetitive as ranked ladder or infinite ranked latter. I also felt the game felt like it was becoming too expensive (yes I could ignore the bundles as a lot of people mentioned but I actually wanted to buy some of the stuff that they released but really couldn't stomach paying their prices). I get that they have to make profits, I really don't need to hear anyone's explanation that it's a company and they need to make money- just because they do, doesn't mean that continuously increasing the prices is a good thing for a huge portion of the player base.
As you mentioned it seems the game is now completely targeted at Whales or Streamers who can write-off their purchases. To me that's a bad sign for any game. I've seen numerous streamers actually quit the game because they felt it was getting too expensive and I appreciate you pointing this out when a lot of other streamers seem to turn a blind eye.
Lastly I think the overall game experience for me is just awful. They started to release cards like Zemo, which sparked an increase in the playrate of truly annoying cards (Gladiator, Yondu, Cable). Whose purpose is to stop you from being able to draw your cards. What I want to know is - who thought this would create a fun gaming experience?! It feels like they're designing cards like Loki and Zemo just to piss people off and stop wanting to play the game. I'm sure its fun for some but I would bet it annoyed the crap out of others. To the point they just thought "screw this I'm done".
Anyway, appreciate your honest take on the state of the game. Even if I don't play the game I still really enjoy the content you make, and a lot of others do so we hope you stick around even if the game is literally in the toilet right now!

  • @DamianBrownIsCool
    @DamianBrownIsCool Před měsícem +2

To me, my growing discontent comes from that the two "new features" added to the game have been albums + emotes, and then custom borders. Albums and emotes were a flop for me, mostly because of how they were tied together, making them basically unobtainable as a f2p (+season pass) player, so it is a nothing feature to me. I have been actively collecting Jim Lee variants since I started playing during the Wakanda season, Jim Lee Colossus was my FIRST VARIANT, and I still only have 11/12 in the Jim Lee album. Imagine if you could get emotes 1/50 collection caches, maybe replacing a bubble. They could have actually been a part of the game and the community culture. Now they are just badges that say, I spent around 14 thousands gold on variants. You're supposed to see the other player's grind reward and it make you feel like you want to chase after it to. I always just go, well, good for them I guess, not something I'll ever have.
Additionally, the albums were not at all what I expected them to be, which were showcases of complete themes. Not 12 random selection of sub themes. Why do some of Dan Hipps count and some don't, why should I ever care about my collection of Ink Pulp variants when most of them come from gold bundles and spotlight caches and therefore are ineligible for albums. It just feels arbitrary and random, making the effort (or money!) not worth it.
Custom Borders simply is an unfinished feature with no purpose in its current state, and then it will be barely a feature when it finally gets a slight improvement next month. With the UI that they already have, it simply is not difficult to make it easy to move unlocked "components" between variants and mix and match. And they only didn't do it because they thought they didn't/wouldn't have to, and the fact they are dragging their feat to give us HALF of that feature is absurd to me. I assume the only reason they are taking so long is because they haven't figured out a way to monetize the new split effects yet, and like emotes they hate the idea of even giving anything out to people for playing the game without paying the game.
Not to mention the disaster week of bugs with USAgent's release, and the pathetic mea culpa that punished people not for exploiting the bug. I've said this is other places, but SD's only actually limited product is the goodwill in the community. There are infinite spotlight keys and credits, but if they lose the player's sympathy and interest, then they will really start to lose money.
... and they still haven't mentioned card mastery since the trailer like 4 or 5 months ago. Nothing they actually have released make me optimistic it won't just be another feature for whales.

Glad you took the opportunity to share your thoughts. As a player AND a creator, I’d imagine dealing with a game you’re losing some enjoyment for would be tough.
Been playing F2P since launch. I don’t mind the monetization. I don’t buy the pass for cards, so I can ignore the cosmetic bundles. Even bundles that sell keys and tokens aren’t likely to make too much of an impact for their buyers in terms of card acquisition.
I do agree that the game can get a bit boring. I like to hit infinite in the first 2-3 days to get it out of the way. I’d been trying to motivate myself to keep a high rank, but there’s no real point. Once I beat an infinity conquest months ago, I lost interest in trying to do that again as well. A refresher on the rewards for completing that would be nice (inked avatars? Card borders? Intro voice lines?). Now I just grind PG for the shop items.
I do like to collect strong cards and variants and and upgrade their borders and that still keeps me coming back. But I know that since we’re likely only to get Series 5 cards the rest of the year, it’s going to become increasingly difficult to get as many cards as I’d like.
Maybe the teased leagues or clan modes will breathe some fresh air into the game, but I get the strange feeling those modes will breed toxicity.

Agree with you on the monetization aspect; their quest to build out tons of S5 cards for the eventual series drops keeps cars acquisition slow for a majority of the base; they must have data to tell them that’s how they maximize the LTV for a user.
The cards they release that are mid-level effects should not cost 6K tokens out of the gate.
I love playing Silky Smooth with it back in the Meta but I definitely have noticed I’m playing less between more irl plans popping up and the weekly cards not being excited at all. Will probably have an uptick in play with White Widow release.

My biggest complaint is the Spotlight Cache system. I have purchased the battle pass for about 8 seasons. I have used so many keys getting variants that I don't want, instead of featured cards that I really need. Why not let players trade in 1 key for 1 card, simple as that? I get that Snap wants to make money, but some of the hoops they make you jump through is wild. Example: Instead of that Red Hulk you wanted, you get 100 tokens... Great just another 2900 tokens to go. They need to give more power to the players.

I‘m happy that I don‘t have to spend money on bundles as I don‘t miss out on anything that‘s really necessary. I‘m fine with passing on extra gold, tokens, credits variants…and as a player who‘s almost collection complete I either have enough keys to get new cards or have the tokens if I don‘t have enough keys so that the card acquisition system doesn‘t feel too bad to me. I can see why people are mad over the card acquisition system or the monetization but just as you said I also ignore all of this and have a great time playing snap.

Drew, that's because you live in a place where from my perspective the prices are a little cheaper. I've already commented on other channels, but here in Brazil, all these bundles cost 5x more. Which from our economic perspective is very, very expensive. Any bundle that costs, for example, $100 here is R$500. And with that I think, should I really spend it on this when I can buy a triple A game for PS5 and still have R$200 left over? The values practiced in Marvel Snap need to be reviewed and good economic, fun and rewarding practices inserted into the game. As a colleague said here in the chat. Marvel Snap is almost becoming a job rather than a game to entertain us.

I feel you on this. I've skipped most of the recent cards and honestly haven't missed them. I'm also pretty fatigued by the constant stream of overpriced bundles in the shop and those emotes really didn't help matters at all.
As for the meta as a whole - I really think Snap faces a medium to long term issue with the 12-card deck. I see some creators putting out deck lists and taking credit for them, but honestly, with so few cards in a deck and the game as a whole, there's only so many concepts that you can build out.

I went from an avid daily player who would occasionally buy the season pass or a good value bundle to playing maybe once or twice a week within the span of the past couple months. Basically every deck or strategy that I enjoy playing is currently in a spot where its easily countered or key cards are nerfed to states that make the whole deck unplayable. Sure, I can probably put together some kind of meta list, but I often find myself missing important pieces of those decks. I even have spotlight caches stocked up so I can get the cards I want, but I still have to wait weeks or even months before that card ends up in rotation. Countering your opponent is still stronger than just playing your own thing.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective. I have struggled off and on with burn out with the game. The new player experience is terrible imo, I have been playing f2p since last august. I have CL 4673 and still not S3 complete. I think I am close, should hit it next month or two. I have not hit infinite yet, I probably could have but its hard to stay motivated enough for that grind. I tend to just use conquest to complete my dailies and get the rewards from that. maybe the guild system will add enough to keep things interesting, but i have my doubts.

Some changes I would suggest for dev team:
    1. New game mode that rewards in-game currency to buy stuff from a shop. Allow for a f2p or whale section I.e the mode can play for free or you use gold to play for better rewards or additional tries
    2. Clear cadence on card release. What I mean by this is the community should have a better idea of when they will become available in spotlight caches
    3. Add social aspect in game that allows for interaction in game. This isn’t as important than more things to do in game but having some social aspect allows for more immediate deck designing amongst clans/alliances

Played since launch. Game started feeling like a job and started feeling predatory. I decided to quit the week war machine came out. I have 24 keys , 18k gold and 14k tokens sitting there when I uninstalled. I miss watching your content and cozy etc.

I'm enjoying the game, but I can understand this perspective. The last two big changes to the competition of the game were Conquest mode and the introduction of infinite ladder last summer. Power Couples and AvX were interesting experiments, and I hope they try more events like them. The leagues mode they announced for some European markets has me excited.

Yeah I kinda feel the same way tbh. I know infinite isn't everything, far from it - but I've gotten close (94 once, and usually end up around mid 80s) and so decided to try and grind to see if I could hit it and MAN it just killed my enjoyment of the game. Now I feel like I'm done with the game but ALSO I want to try and reach 100 just so I can say 'there I reached it', I don't know why I'm doing it to myself haha

Yeah im frustrated with the lack of new content as well. The monetization doesnt bother me as much but the game needs more F2P engagement stuff. Character Mastery should have been here 2 months ago. Still love the game though, hoping the new game mode coming is fun.
