  • One of the hardest parts of nomadic living is maintaining health care and I'm sorry to say it's one that I have few answers for. Fortunately, there is some hope; In today's video, we meet my friend Suanne who received 100% totally free dental care at a RAM Rural Area Medical clinic. This amazing organization has provided free medical and dental services to over 740,000 people since 1984, including Suanne.

I've worked one of those as an RN. Started at the vital sign station, then quickly got moved to assisting an Oral Surgeon doing tooth extractions. Seriously.. the number of people we were able to help in one day.. simply because we got to do the care and not have to spend half an hour per pt doing documentation.. which is really only for insurance / reimbursement purposes. Take insurance rules out of the picture.. and focus on the pt.
Do realize.. not everyone can be seen, and if you need vision and dental, depending on how many staff are present, you may get one or both, or not. They work as fast as they can, but if they have 10 stations and 400 people show up....
don't expect "hundreds" of dental chairs at every clinic. .maybe 10-20 in many places. All are volunteers, many may be dental students etc or currently licensed physicians and nurses.

It's really comforting to know this. I recently lost my dental and eyecare insurance because I didn't have money to pay for the insurance or the care. I have some serious issues with both that have been weighing on me. It's good to know there are people there that can and want to help.

Very much worth it for those who don't have other access to services.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why the US doesn't have universal health care. In Australia, everyone gets free health care. Health insurance gives you extras like free medicine or a private room but no one ever has to have crap teeth or be sick or blind. Everyone benefits rich or poor. Good health is a human right not a privilege of the rich.

    • @belindabean3903
      @belindabean3903 Před 6 lety +9

Annette Huppatz In the US, it is a political issue. Republicans are opposed to universal health care, tons of money is spent to scare voters into believing they will lose any benefits they have, and voters go along with the difficult and expensive system we have. Sad, but true.

    • @matthewronson5218
      @matthewronson5218 Před 5 lety +8

Why? Because we're not twits. You praise the same government that does not trust you to own a firearm. You think this was all "free"? You don't even know that things don't appear out of thin air.
Good Health is a personal responsibility first and foremost-not a right. A "Right" in this case means you demand others pay your way through life-ultimately under threat of a gun that now only the government allows its thralls to possess. .

    • @songlyon

    • @matthewronson5218

@@songlyon We could all be like all those War Veterans that died waiting for health care due to 'socialized medicine' of the VA due to systemic and intentional fraudulent and deceptive practices.
If the gov't cares that much about War Veterans-how much are they going to care about anyone else-including you and your loved ones.
I don't have much more use for the Republi-cant's much more than the Demon-rats, who are two sides of the same coin for political theater so people can impotently quibble amongst themselves and point fingers over the same fiat token while they play bread and circuses (which includes political theater) to distract the sheeple as they play them.
Take for example: the established fact that the Bush's and Obama's being best buddies. They are just playing their role. All the World's indeed a stage and the audience laps it up from the trough. and utter simplistic slogans as they've been conditioned to do-which effects precious little except the emotional state of the sheep.

Columbus Ohio has a free clinic on Monday night's that sounds very similar. All the medical personnel are volunteers. They offer the same services for free.
They use the health department building, and it's starts at 5 pm.
The staff there are also so caring and compassionate!
You do have to wait a while, so I brought snacks, a sodoku book, something to read, water, etc.
I was diagnosed with Diabetes there, and received medicine, and a couple sessions with a nutritionist. I also got an eye exam and free pair of glasses!
I worked as a temporary for 8 years, and could not afford the super high medical benefits through the temp agencies, so this place helped me so much, and treated me wonderfully!
Nice to know there's options on the road, thanks for this video!

OK, things I like about this:
Free and not financed by tax money.
These people are volunteering to do this because they want to.
This is charity on the giver's terms, as it should be. Wonderful.
They are mobile, and apparently highly efficient.
Looking at the RAM budget numbers from their financials on thier website:
They are well funded, and no frills.
They demonstrate quite well that high quality health care need not cost anything close what insurance companies and huge corporate hospitals are charging.
Things I don't like(these are minor and, I realize, unavoidable in many cases).
Can be hard to get to, depending on when you get sick.
May not have anyone who can provide the care you need if no one in the area of expertise you need shows up.
May not be able to get to you in the time they are available if too many people need one kind of care.
Overall, I applaud this. I would also like to let people know of a place called Surgery Center of Oklahoma. They are a part of an organization called the Free Market Medical Association. They post all prices for direct self-pay on their website for al the procedures they do. I know two people who went there and they both gush about the place. The care is top notch, the doctors are excellent, and the prices are 1/6th to 1/10th the cost of the same procedure, using the same treatments and equipment, and often performed by the same doctor as would do it at the Baptist Memorial Hospital up the road, if the insurance company were paying for it.
I have long said that Obamacare is wrong headed.
Before Obamacare, thanks to a lot of Great-Depression-era idiocy that should have ended long ago, we had doctors, hospitals, and patients all competing for insurance money.
After Obamacare we have doctors, hospitals, patients, and, to a significant extent, insurance companies all competing for tax money.
To bring down the cost of health care, we need is to get doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies all competing for the patients' money.
The way to do that is do make mandatory what Surgery Center of Oklahoma does voluntarily: to post all prices for all procedures, products, and services on the provider websites and in their offices, and to abolish the tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance, thereby forcing providers and insurers to deal with the patient to get paid, not corporations and government agencies.
That will not solve every problem with the health care system, and it will take time for market forces to sort things out, but it would probably bring health care costs down by at least a third for routine procedures and checkups within a the first year, and get the process started.
