  • In 1986 the Royal Australian Navy Celebrated 75 years of existence, they invited a few mates over to help celebrate. WOW what a party! I think we (HMS Illustrious) spent 5 weeks alongside at Woolloomooloo in Sydney Harbour. I don't think I was ever made to feel so welcome, by so many friendly people anywhere else in the World, Fantastic time...Thank you Australia.

Great couple of weeks and very well hosted by the Aussies. I was on HMS Amazon. Memories are a bit blurry now but I remember we pretty much made the Bourbon & Beefsteak in Kings X our base.

Loved the whole deployment, a nice police lady took me back to HMS Illustrious, and showed me her stockings, bless her.

I was on the Manchester and I marched through the street's also. This has brought back many great beer induced memories and I was also only 19 years old.Global 86 was a great beer drinking deployment. This also tried to do a documentary, of the Royal Navy going around the world, god knows what happened to those videos.

Remember a few faces from Portsmouth dockyard. I was on HMS INTREPID at that time and we were going through the Suez on our way to Djibouti. Great times.

Thanks Kevin. I have a copy of the Australian broadcast, but had never seen this one. I was a young, single sailor on the USS Foster for that great celebration. Thank you to the Australian people, especially the ladies, for their fantastic hospitality! Much was said about the protesters, but many of them were buying the drinks throughout the nights. That was a party I will never forget.

Before the Review someone set up a “date a sailor” service so that no sailor would be lonely. Half the girls (and a lot of older divorcees) in Sydney registered. Some of those sailors would have left Sydney on a intravenous drip afterwards, they were so busy with the women 😀

I was on Lusty for this Global 86 trip. I was lucky enough to be part of the cable party when we positioned at the buoy. A 19 year old AB(R) back then. Thank you for this video, as my original was on an old betamax version not seen for many years.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have the original ABC VHS but am unable to play it. I was freshly arrived from England to start my new life with my fiance who was in the RAN. I can spot myself in the crowd during the march! Who knew that our daughter would be preparing to be part of the RAN 100th Anniversary celebrations 25 years later.

Aussie runs ashore were epic...Brisbane, Sydney and Fremantle. Still got my copy of this on VHS....Good times. Cheers for posting.

Really enjoyed that, i was on HMS illustrious, 814 Squadron Naval Airman, I remember the foam incident, Harrier landed on deck minus an outrigger, needed a soft landing, unfortunately it blew away all the foam bed mattresses from the Air Department.

It was fun to see the old seven inch disks so this is a good old film :. Chuck Maki (formerly in the USAFSS in Turkey in the late 1950's.) I was especially pleased to see the old aircraft. In my day, props ruled :) I visited a 'stringbag' in Halifax NS Canada...it surprised me that it was so big. I had an uncle who was an MP in WW2, safe in England.

    I was there!
But I'm afraid saw none of that stuff missed it all!
You see, The Royal Fleet Auxiliary is good enough to fight alongside with and to die alongside the Royal Navy but not good enough to be seen with them in public!
RFA OLMEDA was put on a commercial miles from the festivities .....
At leat some Sheila's found there way there even if they were in their fifties!
    Life in a blue suit.

never ever drink with Australian Royal Navy or RN senior ratings. They don't seem to care how drunk they get, they just throw more down and most keep standing, well perhaps a bit wobbly. Certainly the RAAF didn't have their stamina.
After going to a games night in the WO's mess at a Navy base in Victoria near Melbourne in about 1988 ( don't ask me which one) I found it expedient to sneak away early to bed.
