Estonia had a window to the western world via Finland and Finnish TV and in and around this hotel Viru (at the photo, where the Finnish tourists were staying) there was a black market of anything from T-shirts and jeans to music. Our languages are close relatives, so it was easy to communicate AND pain in the ass for Estonian communist party as they saw all this "horrendous bourgeois influence" coming.

The KGB used to operate in the the top floor of that hotel. The official statement was that the floor didn’t excist or that ”there was nothing interesting for the guests to see”. KGB agents spied on tourists and visitors from other countries with michrophones (sometimes hidden under plates or ashtrays) and cameras.
