I love Slovenia. A tiny marvel with mountains, lakes, caves, castles and blue sea.
As a Czech, I feel a relatively strong relationship with Slovenia. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities. I have never been to Slovenia, but from the things I have seen and heard, it seems to me that we really have a lot in common, it even seems to me that more than we Czechs have with Poles and Slovenians with Croats or Serbs. Zdravím do Slovinska naše braty!
From what Ik there is a strong argument to be made that Slovenians were sort of a bridge between west/south Slavs in their early history, large chunks of today's Austria used to be the original Slovene homeland and ik Czechia used to stretch further south into what is todays Austria and some people posit that they were both part of Samo's Kingdom.
Slovenes dont probably realise that, cause we arent direct neighbors, but our Czech and Slovene histories and cultures are incredibly similar. Im no expert on this but i would say Slovenes have more similar history and culture to Czechs rather than Croats or Serbs. Holly Roman Empire -> Austrian Empire -> Austria-Hungary. Then Czechs formed Czechoslovakia and Slovenes formed Kingdom with Serbs and Croats. Then both countries had socialism, then both went relatively early NATO and the EU. We both have a lot of Germanic cultural influence, Poles call us Czechs Slavic Germans while others call Slovenes as Slavic Austrians/Swiss. We are two most developed Slavic nations, with this kinda practical, relaxed, cold-headed, peaceful mentality focused on well-being and development. Also Jože Plečnik had a huge influence on the architecture in Prague, he for example re-developed Prague Castle which is one of the most famous heritage we have. Also the hilly landscape is quite similar, although we Czechs dont have sea and rather small mountains.
@@Aggoenix Res je, kar ste zapisali. Slovenci smo vedno imeli tesne kulturne vezi s Čehi. Češka in Slovenija sta gospodarsko najuspešnejši državi med Slovani z visokim življenjskim standardom itd.
I just returned home from that beautiful country after staying there for 1.5 months 🇸🇮💚
Bog živi in blagoslovi našo prelepo, prekrasno in samostojno SLOVEnijo, slovenski narod, jezik in kulturo! Živela SLOVEnija, Slovenke, Slovence in slovenstvo! Živela svoboda! 🇸🇮❤️🙏🇸🇮🙏
Slovenia is one of those countries that are just chilling.
It's a wonder that a Slovene nation still exist, there wasn't much of chilling through history for us.
@@valentintapata2268 C'on! Just a Hapsburg vassal. No drama at all.
@@manos5464 It wasn't under Habsburgs all the time and there wasn't honey and milk when it was. Slovenian lands were colonies in all but name.
Was in Slovenia one time, was jogging around some mountains and I met a Slovenian girl who kissed me and then ran away. 10/10 would go back.
I’m half Slovenian. Wish there were more videos like this. Most Americans haven’t even heard of Slovenia.
Which is sad after having the First Lady from here
I also understand it's had to keep up with every single country and its origins unless you develop a curiosity for it.
On my Mother's side my family is from Gorizia
love to Slovenia from Finland!!! :)
Slovenia is cool, very underrated imo
Very good video. In almost 3 minutes you covered our country much better than Geography Now did.
Love your profile pic, tovariš
I really admire your dedication to this series and your channel. It’s really fantastic!
thank u Mr History for another cool vd
Great video!
We're glad to border with Slovenia 🇮🇹 🇸🇮
Excellent video
List of regions I’d like to see after you’ve done every country: Tibet, Hawaii, Siberia, Crimea, life for the indigenous peoples of North, Central, and South America, as well as the indigenous peoples of Australia, Africa, and New Zealand. And by life I mean how they lived before and after European colonization which led to say Canada or America. Great Video by the way! Keep up the good work!
Just got a pretty sweet Slovenian military surplus jacket. Figured I’d learn a bit more about where it came from. I’m not disappointed
fun fact: if you go to any coastal slovenian city and shout trst je naš the people there will love you (this is not a joke)
For all non-Slovenian speakers: "Trst je naš" means "Trieste is ours".
Slovenes dont probably realise that, cause we arent direct neighbors, but our Czech and Slovene histories and cultures are incredibly similar. Imagine this Poland-Czechia-Slovakia-Slovenia cooperation, that would be awesome.
you da goat fr
We are exceptionally good at sports in general. For the fact that the population pool is 2.1 million, we have an insane amount of extremely good athletes in many disciplines. We have won gold medals in different olympic sports, Tina Maze is arguably the best female skier of all time, youve shown Luka, there is also Dragič, we are also very good at cycling (Pogačar, Roglič) and many more.
I came to see this video cuz I wanted to learn about Pogi and Rogla country. =)
Thanks mate, I am looking for more on Slovienian Identies if you could help?
This Slovakia episode it’s good
Hahaha, they also part of this Country, separated from mother land in history by invading Romans!
Slovakia and Slovenia are two different countries. But don’t feel bad. George W. Bush couldn’t get them straight, either.
@@valerietaylor9615 Bush was an idiot.
damn that was really fast :D
Can you please tell me what your next countries are going to be
Slovenia does look beautiful
From what we're taught in history class in Slovenia there was a massive amount of opposition to joining the rest of the South Slavs but we reluctantly did due to the fact that Serbia had international recognition while Slovenia & Croatia had none due to being just regions of Austria-Hungary essentially.
It was more of a "we kinda have to..." rather than "YAAAY WE LOVE EACH OTHER :) " but in fairness there wasn't any deep animosity either.
You should have joined Czechoslovakia hah. I think you have far more similar culture and mentality to Central Europeans/Western Slavs rather than this South Slavic/Balkan vibe. We also managed to get loose from Austria Hungary in 1918, even though we had fully indipendent Czech kingdom since around 12th century and then semi-indipendent electoral kingdom in Holly Roman Empire. And we both had relatively a lot of cultural influence from Germanic countries. And Plečnik was massively influential on Prague architecture. Also this cold-headed peaceful bit introverted mentality focused on well-being, peace and development is very similar. Serbs, Croats and even Slovaks, maybe even Poles tend to be more hot-blooded and "slavic" in my experience than Slovenes and Czechs.
didn't know this country was so based
Slo-DUO part 2! Solomon Islands are next.
Slovenia is basically like mix of Chechia and switzerland
For one because being under someone boot made them be able to survive as country many years later due to good economy management by opresor and second because they isolated from the rest of yugoslavia at time of the war and it only showed how smart nation they are
The notion that Slovenia has anything to do with Switzerland is yet another blatant lie created to make Slovenia look better than it actually is. Fact is that there have been _no_ historic ties between Slovenia and Switzerland historically and that just because they share a mountain range, they don’t automatically have something to do with each other.
And when it comes to Czechia, no, we don’t share anything with them nowadays either. Completely distanced from each other in the past 100 years.
Also the hilly landscape is quite similar, although we Czechs dont have sea and rather small mountains. But both landscapes have this magical hilly romantic central european vibe, full of valleys, hills everywhere, lakes, old farm villages and catholic outdoor shrines, its a perfect setting for some medieval or fantasy game or a movie or some backpack outdoor trips.
Why is this so short, I would prefer it to be at least slightly longer - at least long enough to be exactly like the previous videos in accuracy - Romania video was exactly perfect in lenght and detail - this one was a bit lacklustre
"then they fell to the german franks" ...
I love how people who are not into history get confused by "german franks" XD
Hello im a slovanian love the video but you didn’t mentionthqt we gave the ship materials to america
Don't forget Melania!

Slovenia is a great gateway to the Balkans, though I can't forgive them for creating Talking Tom.
Up next... the Solomon Islands! 🇸🇧
I'm Slovene and I never knew *we* were responsible for that abomination.
Is Russia not considered a Slavic country? Doesn't Russian oil make it richer than Slovenia?
By the way I loved the Brinjevic I was given by my Slovenian hosts when visiting this beautiful country
It said per capita, not as a whole. Obviously Russia is the richest out of the Slavic countries, but much of the population lives in poverty with poor wages. Slovenia is richer per capita, which in simplest terms, basically means that the average person owns more wealth than a person from a different Slavic country. Obviously it gets more complex than that, but that is all that is really needed to understand the basics.
@@deutschegeschichte4972 It makes sense now. Thank you.
That is not a super quick history, but the full version
You could make 2 days long video and still wouldnt be close to full version. He literally completely skiped over some of the most important parts of our history
Compared to Srbija, right?
Nice! But one thing you got wrong: it depends on source, but czechia is the actual richest per capita slavic country.
Joining Yugoslavia is the single greatest mistake Slovenia ever made.
Why so?
@@crsx1861 Because it was fucking communist. It decreased the progress of Slovenia, tax money was stolen, Slovenia is now associated with yugoslavia and the balkans even though it was part of it for only 70 years, it was plagued with communists who persist to this day.
Not really. Considering Yugoslavia's war industry and relatively strong (or hyped?) army, Slovenia was pretty safe during the cold war. Otherwise it could be taken over by Soviets as a buffer zone, similar to Hungary, Czeckoslovakia, Poland etc. That's one part of a history that has strong advantages and equally strong disadvantages.
I do like that the Austrians did not Austrianize people they ruled. Other countries would've at least force the language on them. Or did they, does anyone around here know?
They did. Slovene was not accepted in any kind of public work and schools were in German with children risking a beating if they even greeted someone in Slovene. However Habsburgs didnt meddle too much in speaking habits at home and in rural parts which is why language wasnt under direct threat of extinction like under Italian occupation for example
Great info. Thanks for sharing!
Most of Austria was Slavic at one time...
Germany enforced it's language for only a few years around WW2 - but most Slovnes at that time spoke or understood a bit of German due to it's history w Austria.
@@amberanubis8336 Otto v. Habsburg was the first to lobby for Slovenian recognition after announcing independance.
I clicked because I thought this was a Slovakia Video, I am thoroughly disappointed.
