AnalogPlanet's Editor Michael Fremer Interviewed

- The day before he received the L.A. & Orange County Audio Society's Founder's Award, AnalogPlanet Editor Michael Fremer sat down for a lengthy interview with film maker Ben Williams (who remained off-camera). Williams calls it a "guest monologue".
In this edited series of occasionally hilarious excerpts Fremer discusses his '90s era national publicity tours on behalf of TDK promoting vinyl records including a nerve wracking appearance on The Today Show sitting between Bryant Gumbel and Deborah Norville, and a later tour during the "laser disc days" explaining home theater and surround sound to a mostly unfamiliar audience.
While the TDK tours were intended to show people how to transfer vinyl to cassettes and later to CDs, Fremer used the radio and television appearances to promote vinyl records at a time when it seemed the format was doomed.
Fremer also describes the unusual health threatening circumstances under which he resigned from The Absolute Sound magazine and later joined Stereophile, where he's been senior contributing editor for the past 24 years.
You are guaranteed to laugh more than a few times and perhaps barf at least once. If you enjoyed this interview why not listen to an AnalogPlanet Radio show? You can find them on the AnalogPlanet website under the "Music" drop down menu. All the tracks were vinyl sourced and even compressed they will sound great...and I tried to make the shows as entertaining as was this video!

Why can I not stop listening to Michael Fremer? What a great storyteller.
Me too.... but don’t say he is a humble guy ... Even Fremer say that he is not a humble guy 😂
But passion there is in spades 🤓
I get the feeling that working at The Absolute Sound was a real pain in the ass
It's funny how stress manifests in the body. I've had glass jaw, shoulder joints, upper leg/pelvis joint crushing pain, and yes, the dreaded hemorroid, all from stress, all the while telling myself, I'm not stressed. Once the stress is relieved so is the condition I have also found. Pretty fascinating mind body connection stuff. Glad you recovered. The rest is history!
Great interview
I always enjoy your videos but this one really took the cake. Keep up the great work and congrats.
I loved this, you should totally do an episode here and there of some stories. I could listen to you tell them all day. All the best LM
Michael you should do more stories about your past experiences, you are an expert story teller and your personality would allow you to be successful in any field - love the factory tours - Cheers 🍻
Hey Mikey, You are a gifted story tellers! I enjoyed this and other stories you told on your channel. I especially enjoyed the story about you being an "Expert Witness" in the Quincy Jones vs. The Estate of Michael Jackson Trial.
That's a great interview...well deserved award.
Improbably fascinating. Thanks for trusting. Best wishes.
Well done, Michael! I'd LOVE to hear some HP stories. My first go around in this hobby, he was a mysterious, almost mythical creature. No one not connected to the biz ever saw him. Then in his last year(s), there were photos of him at LAOCAS (which I couldn't get down there for), etc. Must have been an interesting guy.
So working at The Absolute Sound was literally a pain in the ass. Great story!
great story, very different from what I expected :D
I laughed my ass off! 🤣🤣🤣
Good stuff Mikey and good on JA for taking that chance!
You are a superb storyteller . I enjoyed this immensely.
Bravo on your amazing courage Michael.
Great stories, you’re a standup guy Michael. Saw you at the Florida audio show and look forward to introducing my 14 year old daughter to you next year who has acquired much interest in vinyl with me. See you at Axpona!
Michael , Great story .. Gotta love it !! Jimmy .....
I have written Fresh Air and Terry Gross numerous times suggesting you for a guest. I know that Gross is a big record collector.
Awesome Butt/Air Stress Story. You kill me.
Ben Williams, nicely done. I like the retro style and the Jazz.
You made me properly laugh with this video. Great stuff as always, long may your vinyl crusade continue.
Michael your acceptance speech at the Gala had me on my knees laughing hysterically!!!!
Hans any chance you could review the NAD M10 please. This looks very interesting.
This is a good one..Laughing out loud here!..haa
Im Embarrassed that he’s not embarrassed the amount of expensive gear this guy owns.
As someone who has dealt with hemorrhoids for many years, your story was both on the edge of your toilet seat interesting and hilarious, Michael. Motion picture material for sure!!
Only Fremer could somehow turn an interview about his career in to a graphic story about his severe case of hemorrhoids, and make it all work.
He's a national treasure.
Never witnessed this abrasive tool makes ANYTING work. He's not well spoken, has no manners and is just plain awkward. Basically, he's an asshole.
@@jeffl4909 He is a poster boy of everything that is wrong in the audio industry.
I reckon Fremer does not pretend to be a nice guy ... he cares about his music a lot and if people think that he is a jerk that’s their problem... noone pushes you to watch these videos guys!
Personally I like this a lot 🤓
Any extra copies of your comedy album. It is a bit hard to get
Can you make a vid about harp music? It seems hard to come by, let alone to know what is good... cheers!
Keep rocking!
Did NOT expect any of that, but it was...wonderful..?
I nearly died laughing!
"I have a very healthy butt" LMAO
Michael,.... Never knew you did such a great Daffy Duck impersonation....... They actually paid you for showing people how to tape record vinyl albums on to cassette... ...Wow!
TDK was always the best tape in my opinion!
I had trouble with the TDKs starting to squeak after being in a hot Texas car. Maxell did not. Used a lot of Maxell Chrome.
@@inforobob A cassette tape review in 2019. I love it.
I prefered Thats.
The true test is digging out old tapes from the 70's and listening to them today. While most either decompose or sound like pink noise as you play them, all my BASF still sound excellent.
@@4Kandlez but they came out a lot later, at least ten years after TDK and Maxell Chrome
OMG!

Hello Michael. I think you are wonderful, keep up the good work. So glad that Vinyl has come around as you had always predicted. Your fan from Australia
This happened when?... when you were about fart-y years old? 😉 Yet again, some of the younger generations who haven't experienced this won't see the obvious humor and just see it as a "fart joke" but the older of us who have, will be ROFL. Great stuff... you should have been a standup comedian like Milton Berle.
What do you like best about Vynyl ,the clicks, pops, scratches, or thunk its thunkita at the end of a record played on a tonearm with an end of record lift, or speed variance in on a belt drive table without a micro ground rubber belt?
I like the fact that a dumb asswipe like you comes here to show us all how incredibly dumb you are and how little you know! Thanks for the entertainment!
Fremer seems like a really nice guy.
Esteban Nemo He truly is. I did a tongue and cheek interview with him for Dagogo.com and spent the day with him here in Vegas. Lunch, interview and then to the serious stuff - record shopping at a local used vinyl store. Very gracious and a great mentor.
You are hilarious with that story
Well you know what they say.... when life gives you butt-grapes, make grape juice.
Song at end of video?
Dunno. Producer knows. I will ask..
By the way what does the word "shill" mean?
Someone who endorses something for money but doesn't make that clear
an accomplice of a hawker, gambler, or swindler who acts as an enthusiastic customer to entice or encourage others.
a person who pretends to give an impartial endorsement of something in which they themselves have an interest.
I like the eccentric personality he possess. The point is that this is one hardworking, wise and witty guy who is passionate about his work. That is the fundament for living a meaningful life. I wish you all the best Mr. Michael Fremer.
1 name and 2 words, Lou Reed Tribute Band! Are you related? Just breaking your bollocks. I have a thrift store record player although I use to have a pair of Technics 1210s. Wish I could afford those again but im considering the pioneer plx 500 or something better in that price range since I'm sure there is. Anyway, great videos. Im not an audiophile but I enjoy the adventure and info in your videos.
Little more information than I was expecting.
Can you please review Origan Line arm and turntable. I totally enjoy your humour you old sock
Funny!
“Michael Fremer Interviewed” ???turns camera on himself and says, “ACTION”
I did not do that. It was produced by Ben Williams at his place in CA. Learn to read, knucklehead.
Amzing stroytelling, Michael. You deserve a talk show. I never in a million years thought that story would unfold in that manner! My stomach hurts from laughing so hard! I should probably cauterize my asshole shut just to play it safe.
"Home taping is killing music, and it's illegal!" Don't you remember? :)
Bowers & Wilkins logo 🤔🏆😁
Ben Williams!
Sorry, just liking my speakers 🔊
Wonderful story.
Great interview!
if you wanted absolute sound, you should've used Bose.
PlatinumEagleStudio's For What
Hemorrhoids are the worst but thank god it was not cancer.
Unfortunately the people who desever to be rich and happy have to work hard at it , Thanks Michael Thumbs UP 👍
I prefer Maxell XL-II
A life wasted
Hemorrhoids can be caused by stress?
Glad to know Before it happens to me...
AH, get-out-of-here. Huge bigger stage, more air, more open, more everything...
Michael Fremer = legend
