you can buy 999 moons, but to get the special unlocks at the end you need to collect all the moons that are scattered around maps and not buy them from the shops

I'm at 310 moons atm. Already beat the boss level on the dark side. 500 moons unlocks the Darker Side and the secret ending. That's what I'm working for. I've been playing for the last week.
I can tell u I have 797 moons and the darker side is totally worth the work, after playing for 4 years I speedran the game in 1:38

I actually used his same method for coins, except I did it in the Flower area. You have to go to the secret garden entrance, get a seed from the robot, then get up the tall metal tower were peach is, and throw it onto the dirt mound.
Usually, when I try and get 9999 coins, I go to Cascade kingdom and spam the T-Rex part with all the hedgehog things. Hope this helps :)

The actual proven fastest coin method is the dinosaur hat door in cascade kingdom. Due to the dinosaur’s multiple hitboxes, the game thinks you broke the rocks multiple times giving you many more coins.

Fun Fact: The New 8-bit costume is the new most expensive with 9999 coins aswell.
If you finish dark side you get the crown hat and outfit the last world is darker side if you complete it you get the invisible hat it makes you completey invisible

You can buy 10 moons whenever you have at least 1000 coins. You can buy up to 999 moons but won't get the 999 moon ending untill you've collected every moon.
