As a Malaysian myself, this is how I see it. Since Malaysian football is still developing in recent years, and we are not fully mature or developed as those powerhouses like Japan and S.Korea, here’s our idea 💡, concept or mentality:
*It’s not about how many goals we can defend or stop 🛑 ✋. It’s about how we can still manage to not lose the game despite being conceding goals😏😎.*

    • @synnell88
      @synnell88 Před 5 měsíci +2

From what I see, Malaysia is like a Technical (machine gun on Toyota car). The defense are bad, but the attack are good. If Malaysia is against Indonesia eg., Malaysia can win but with score of 3-2 or 4-3, which means the goal deficit is small but with a large score. So Malaysia is an extremely attacking team but with palpable defense. If Malaysia faced an opponent that can absorb their attack, Malaysia is totally finished.

For me, Indonesia is finished. When they drew the Philippines, As a Filipino I'm proud but As a follower of them, I'm worried that they couldn't get a single point in this Asian Cup. I hope Indonesia can gain a ton from this and carry this over for the future and I hope STY stays in the long run. Their best chance is vs A Vietnam team that has a ton of key players out due to injury. For Malaysia, If they beat Jordan, I think they can make past the group stage but their form is very scary, If they continue that, big hope for them. Malaysia just needs to fix their defense. Thailand is aging but there are young players coming but Coach Iishi must wonder how will they adapt to his system in a short period of time. Vietman, many key players are not in the Asian Cup due to injuries, so I'll not be surprised if they lose to Indonesia.
    Indonesia and Vietnam: Finished
    Thailand: Divine Intervention Required

I don't know if Thailand can realistically advance. Kyrgyzstan has proven to be highly dangerous with a shock 1-0 win over Oman, yet both teams are in the same group with Thailand. Oman is historically never scared of Southeast Asian teams, Oman has proven many times that it always stands superior, and this is not helped by the fact Oman is playing in Qatar, a country that is so familiar for many Omanis. Oman's radical tactics, using extreme speed and fast technique, have always been troublesome to even the strongest of Asian continent, so Thailand is nearly hopeless.
But Vietnam is a quite freakishly mysterious one. The more you underestimated them, the more likely Vietnam to make more shocking results. Back in 2007, Vietnam was underestimated by every team in the group for being too weak yet they ended up advancing and not Thailand. Or most recent 2019 edition, Iran and Iraq took the charge but Vietnam was not eliminated.

Call me biased “Because i am.” for malaysia but hear me out, i do see them having hope in their group because recently they just drew against Syria once again for the second time now, the attacking and midfield options are excellent but what worries me are the defence, attacking wise i can vouch that they are the most exciting team to watch at “for the moment” since they have been heavily focused on their flanks when it comes to their attacking, and they are very versatile when they are attacking as well, their left back and right back can be attacking fullbacks if needed, especially Corbin Ong who can transition from a traditional defender to an attacking one if needed, but that’s where the problems arrises, since they are heavily focused of attacking, sometimes their back lines will become a three man back lines, giving more space for their opponents in the flanks if they do transition into attacking and i think that’s where the “problem” if i can even call it that, of getting scored at during the first half, but another thing that should be noted with the Malaysian team is that they are stubborn like mule type shit stubborn when it comes to winning, they would do anything to win heck even send their defenders to the front if needed which happens a lot, well that’s one of the traits that i like about the Malaysian team, is that they just won’t GIVE UP🔥🇲🇾

It's actually five, since Australia is technically Southeast Asian by its membership virtue. By counting this in, only Australia has anything to win it again, although their form is quite sluggish at best.
If you are counting the four indigenous Southeast Asian nations, then there are questions to be take:
*Malaysia* has the brightest, because Jordan and Bahrain are not in good shapes. With only South Korea taking the role as big boy in this group, Malaysia can play to their fullest against Jordan and Bahrain. The bet is they can advance.
*Thailand* will have to require a lot of individual intervention if they really wish to make it through. Saudi Arabia is certainly too much, but Oman and Kyrgyzstan are neither easy. Oman has been historically a very, very troubled foe for every Southeast Asian nation, and Kyrgyzstan recently has proven their worth... by shocking everybody with a 1-0 win over Oman. Given this, Thailand needs to accumulate at least a win over Kyrgyzstan or they are likely doomed.
*Indonesia* is not cohesive as a team and they have proven with a poor 1-1 draw to the Philippines. If there is no improvement right now they will face a huge problem.
*Vietnam* is plagued by injuries like never before and in fact it is the most hit team in this competition because of Troussier's radical duel tactics. Yet this is a team that has always, at some points, managed to defy logics, as the team has proven in 2007, 2019 Asian Cups and 2022 WCQs by snatching a win each.
In many aspects, I think Thailand has to prove a lot, as they failed to live up to expectation many times. Malaysia should feel lucky with this given opportunities. Indonesia is nearly hopeless and Vietnam is... I don't know.

In my country, every football club helps fostering grassroot movement, for simple Athletic Bilbao nurtured players with Basque origins, Barcelona blossomed players with distinctive tiki-taka playing style, to how Atletico Madrid builds career for players based on strict discipline (previously Atleti was an air force club) or how Sevilla embraced the beauty of football with its Andalusian origin. This clearly fosters Spanish football and provides Spain with a cause to believe for.
In Southeast Asia, however, football seems to be run by corporators or hooligans, not football fans genuinely. In Vietnam for example, it is shocking that the military, the police and even businessmen named their clubs as properties and not for football fans (examples being Hanoi Police Club or Viettel The Cong) - both violated the unwritten laws of football club not being a property for any state institution - hell why Vietnam has never seen its potential. Meanwhile, Indonesia has a poor management team and thus clubs are largely operated by corrupt businessmen and hooligans, hence so many cases of deadly violence. Even in Thailand, long seen as model, Thailand's clubs are deeply influenced by figures with tie to the monarchy, rather than being promoted from grassroots, hell why Thai clubs are so successful yet their national team sucks.
Southeast Asia should get rid of institutional, hooligan football, or Southeast Asia will never learn to progress.

I am surprised that some people still think Thailand has more opportunities but they don't mention what kind of opponents they are going to face. Thailand is not facing Bahrain or the UAE, but they are facing Saudi Arabia and Oman. Have anybody forgotten that Oman is a team combined with skills and their East African origin players? When the Omani Empire expanded to East Africa in the 16th century, they enslaved and brought home many East Africans. East Africans are notoriously renowned for being physical, agile and very fast, hence why East African nations are very successful at marathon, such as Mo Farah (British Somali) or Haile Gebreselassie (Ethiopia). Oman has perfectly combined the art of skills and East African genes, hence why they have always triumphed over Southeast Asians.
Considering this factor, Thailand should try to neutralise Omani runners first before trying to score, which is, sadly, something they did so poorly in the past.

All South East Asian teams suffer from the same issue… size. They all lack overall size and physicality (e.g. Thais looked very small against China in their recent World Cup Qualifier, it was a thing that stood out to me in that match). Don’t know how they solve this tbh, maybe they should start selecting for size over technique, or naturalize larger players.

As a Czech-Viet myself, I can see why people distrust Vietnam's chance. However, there is another reason: Vietnam's policy has always been Bilbaolesque, which is based on the paranoia of race, language and culture (a typical Athletic Bilbao alike). Whereas Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia practise relaxed naturalisation policies, Vietnam's naturalisation process has been hampered by demand that this person must know how to speak Vietnamese, behave like Vietnamese and live like Vietnamese, and that having origin from Vietnam alone doesn't guarantee you a place in the national team. That's why Vietnam has, in the past, rejected players that have Vietnamese origins just because they don't feel Vietnamese enough. This troublesome Athletic Bilbao-style policy should not be applied to a national team.

I'm Indonesian and it's obvious that on paper we're not expected to win against Iraq and Japan or even Vietnam, but somehow a portion of our fanbase (the glory hunters) are furious about it. This is our first ever Asian Cup in 17 YEARS, yet they expect the team to perform EXACTLY like we did against non-armed Argentina months ago. That was a FRIENDLY MATCH, while this is a REAL COMPETITION, and with a total of THREE hard opponents in the same group didn't help much either.
On the other hand I understand that our squad are filled with talented young guns who are still raw and not blended enough tactically and mentally, so I just want them to enjoy the moment, play well, gain experience, BUT not to lose in ease so they can shape themselves for years to come. We are definitely an underdog in this tournament, so let's just support them and reduce our expectations, Indonesian fans!
I want to note that Shin Tae Yong's contract is going to be expired by June this year, and the final talks of his extension will mainly evaluated from Indonesia's performance in both Asian Cup and WC Qualifiers. Some of our local "pundits" and "fans" are now pulling the agenda of firing him despite the progress that he and his team made for these five years (minus two years of Covid). As a fan, I'm afraid this would be happened and as a consequence, the development of our national team would be stalled and have to start all over again with no real deal after it, given that our federation PSSI virtually have no real visionary roadmap for the football development in Indonesia (unlike Japan's JFA with their 100 years plan), plus some of our local "pundits", "fans", and even the "executives" inside the federation are RACIST to the half-blood/ancestry-based players. They are the same people who push for Shin Tae Yong exit while also blaming him for the lack of local players from Indonesian league in the national team, despite the quality of the league itself is low-tier.

Iraq won 5-1 because Iraq played at home, which Indonesia did not prepare and the problem was that many of the players were late because they were still playing at their clubs, and there were main players who were injured. when playing against Philippines, Indonesia is not in good condition, especially since the long journey from Iraq to the Philippines, and Indonesian players are not used to playing on synthetic grass. Every time Indonesia plays at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Manila, they always play badly, even if they win, they only have a 1 goal difference.

have you watched this match? Indonesia vs Argentina?
If you think Indonesia is a team whose players are still "babies"
Why is it difficult for Argentina to score goals against Indonesia? Why does Coach Scaloni look so nervous when he hasn't scored? Argentina players all play in elite clubs. Meanwhile, the Indonesian starting eleven here is an average age of U22 and not from an elite club.
List of starting eleven for Indonesia against Argentia:
    Ernando (21 yo)
    Asnawi (23 yo)
    Elkan Baggott (20 yo)
