The sound you're hearing from the guitar is called harmonics. It's when you sit your finger very lightly on the string directly over a fret and that's the noise you get.
I was thinking "he ain't ready for this song" but it turns out you listened to the abridged version. The full rendition, when he starts that "and when I dream" chant, it's followed up by him screaming as he acts out his mother beating and abusing him relentlessly until he finally snaps and fights back, cusses her out, and shouts that it's time for her to die. I had always only listened to the radio (abridged) version when this song first came out. Wasn't until several years later I heard the full version and it messed me up inside for a while. Disturbed has a surprising range of sounds, from harder stuff like this one, "Voices," and "Stupify," to more melodic renditions like "The Light" and their hauntingly beautiful cover of "The Sound of Silence." Definitely a band worth digging into.
Yep, the live Conan O'Brien version. Draiman truly has one of the best vocal skills of any singer across any genre. Oh, and he had a cold during the live show.
That sudden stop at the end there before the last chorus, it's where they cut out a part that I'm guessing was deemed inappropriate for this particular performance or recording, it has been sensored. He slowly starts screaming almost incoherently about physical abuse from a mother and then screaming that he's going to (unalive) her.
It's cut from the music video version; however, it isn't about actual, physical abuse but is instead comparing society to an abusive mother that beats down and attempts to destroy anyone that goes against the societal grain. The cut part is where he has had enough and is choosing to fight back so that he can be his true self rather than a reflection of what society wants/expects of him.
That feeling at the beginning...is called "Disturbed" And the "sickness" the song is about is child abuse. Go back and read the lyrics. It's a song the lead singer penned about the abuse his mother out him through as a kid. And the hopes that it doesn't get passed on to him. Extremely deep and disturbing song about a serious problem. Again..great reaction, but the unedited version is...a bit more disturbing. Maybe in your offline time you can check that out. Also as a sidenote: this song was used for the remake of "Dawn Of The Dead" movie back a few decades ago. There's even a piano lounge version played one time during the movie. LOL, imagine that!
@@MichaelS537 thanks Michael. I couldn't remember that singer's name for the movie's cover version. I didn't know he has done other songs, either. Guess I got some CZcams diving to do today! Thanks again for the name!
While that is literally what the lyrics say, that isn't what the song is actually about. David Draiman has stated that the song "Speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission."
Dude I've been listening to this band since my high school days and they've never disappointed me. Another good song you should listen by them is "The Vengeful One" very good song!
Okay, Queen of the Damned. He helped write a lot of the music specifically for Lestat's band. It all sounds so good. I recommend giving that soundtrack a listen. Down with the Sickness is also used for this film.
I'm a 17 year old metal head with a thing for rock music especially bands such as GODSMACK, ac/dc, deff Leppard, red hot chilli peppers, Seether, kiss, journey, foreigner, scorpions, led zeppelin, bon Jovi,ELO,linkin park, and the list goes on🤟
Disturbed are generally a heavy metal band …. I recommend Five Finger Death Punch ‘a little bit off’ and ‘blue on black’ (their version of Kenny Wayne Sheppard’s song)
This is just one of many great songs from this band. Listen to Inside The Fire, Asylum, Sound Of Silence, Stricken, The Vengeful One, The Night, Voices and Are You Ready. Definitely give a couple or so of em a try.
This song is 🔥. It is a little out there at first. The front man's vocals are beyond amazing. He can do crazy sounds with his voice. The riffs are 🔥. His melodic songs are deep and so damn beautiful.
I had the privilege of getting to see them in concert when I was 17. Made it to the very front center and held onto that rail with my life. I’m a petite 5’1” female. I look like the goody two shoe at school, but I can rocks with the best of them.❤😂 Well worth the bruise I got on my head when a crowd surf for filling me in my head hit the rail. I knew every single word to every song. Pretty sure the lead singer looked at me and pointed, shaking his head in pride. ❤
Jojo, disturbed have sooooo many awesome songs 🤘🤘 like indestructible, stricken, stupify, another way to die, inside the fire (brutal/graphic video), prayer, hold on to memories & a reason to fight 🎶🎸🔥🎶🎸🔥🎶🎸🔥
I love, love, love this song! ❤️❤️❤️ 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Disturbed is one of my fave bands. “Stricken” is another banger! They do have a softer side- you need to check “The Sound of Silence” or “A Reason to Fight”.

Would you believe that lead singer David Draiman was asked to learn to be a cantor for his Jewish church, to lead them in song because of his amazing voice. He also started law school and ran a licensed health care clinic before forming Disturbed. Yet another example of how the most amazing talent can be found in heavy metal. DO check out his cover of THE SOUND OF SILENCE, which went viral when it was released. The official video is very artistically done, but I prefer the LIVE with Conan O'Brian version, where he had the flu and still killed it. Then, you will hear this mans amazing voice and power.
That guitar "jump" is a harmonic. You lightly touch the string right over a fret during the strike. You don't even have to move much on the fret board to do it. But makes a great punch to the chord.
David can sing in any style, and does! Sound of Silence and Stupify are both great choices, but really you could just spin a wheel and take whatever you land on. They are incredibly versatile!
Broooooooooooooo PLEASE listen to some Arctic Monkeys next!!!! I'd love to hear your take on some of their music. Here's some of my recommendations: Teddy Picker, 505, Old Yellow Bricks, Do Me a Favor, My Propeller, Piledriver Waltz, Do I Wanna Know?, Arabella, Kneesocks, Why Do You Only Call Me When You're High?
Actually "the sickness" is not what you're thinking. It's the mental sickness of a child abused by his mother and that comes to "rise the demons" in him, so he eventually hits back. I see you have the lyrics, but the song is cut. Hear the uncutted version, if you didn't by now, and you can also feel the parts where he's begging his mother to not hurt him again, promissing that he'll be a good boy. I don't know if we can even imagine that kind of mental pain. And after that you can hear the sickness, the demon rising, the rage, the hit back .... This is strong song and like so many other rock and metal songs is actually really really about the problems in our society, our families, our real life problems ... the wars, the misery, the abusers, the addicions, that too few people want to talk about, because it's easier to show the world wonderfull, full of sunshine and flowers. The power of rock and metal songs is often deep under the heavy riffs and the agressive vocals. Read the lyrics, man, then hear the songs again, rediscover them, feel them.

This is hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It’s one of the most iconic songs ever written and performed. This is a song you ever smoke and vibe in the dark while it’s really loud…or what u listen to when your pissed and cleaning house lol Look David up and see what he’s about lately :)
They make that sound on the guitar by barely touching the string with the left hand and pull it off real fast as soon as you pluck the string with the pick. If you time it right it makes a distorted strange tone. It helps if the guitar is plugged into a loud amplifier with volume turned up. Check out Papa Roach Come Around afficial video.
You gotta listen to the original album explicit version. Definitely missed a major part of the song. In my opinion the best part of the song. And definitely listen to more Disturbed. Worth every second!
