18 holes with illegal golf ball that only flies straight (as tested by Rick Shiels)

  • The golf CZcams don Rick Shiels recently tested the Polara Ultimate Straight golf ball which, as the name suggests, only flies straight. I thought it would be fun to take it out on the course and see if it helps me hit 18 fairways, 18 greens, and break the course record...

    This year Rob I've used Srixon AD333 tour, Srixon Ultisoft, Vice Tour and Titleist Trusofts. Also the Callaway Supersofts. All cracking good golf balls for my swing speed. The Ultisoft goes a mile but putting is not as good as the AD or Trusoft. The AD is a lovely ball to approach with. The Vice Tour is outstanding and probably up there with the Cromesoft. I use the above because that's what I've won other than the Vice which was a Christmas present. My coach only plays with PV ones, he could not believe how far he hit a supersoft when he tried one, but he hated it for approaches and putting. I really liked the Bridgestone B330 I had a few boxes of those two years ago, but there harder to ind now and bloody expensive on line.
    I always line my tee shots up on a line, I think it helps with alignment!

  • @brutusoftroy2810
    @brutusoftroy2810 Před 5 lety +4

    The dimple pattern keeps the spin axis on the line but the shallow dimples on the line reduce backspin, hence the knockle balls and dropping out of the air with the low spin clubs

    • @wx811
      @wx811 Před 5 lety

      To be honest physics disagrees with this, as dimple patterns have nothing to do with sidespin. Dimples, regardless, will simply collect more air to spin the ball extra. If you put sidespin on a ball, it must curve, based in Gustav Magnus' laws. The only way to get a ball to fly perfectly on axis is if the ball flies with pure backspin, and dimples have so little to do with spin axis, almost 2 or 3 percent, that I find that the only way to achieve the desired flight is weighting. I'm just using my physics knowledge here, but dimples have little to do with spin axis.

    • @brutusoftroy2810
      @brutusoftroy2810 Před 5 lety

      @@wx811 Physics doesn't disagree, it's basic aerodynamics. It's the reason the center line has a different dimple depth and pattern than the sides. It's also why you have to line up the center line with your target. It just works the opposite to the way i thought. The shallow dimples in the center line increase spin over the center line to correct the spin axis put on the ball by the player.

      Bonus finding balls in the bag! Ha, name and shame!

  • @lookylooish
    @lookylooish Před 4 lety +7

    The dimple pattern has shallower dimples in the center which loses lift. Think of it like an airplane wing that has no curve on top so air pressure doesn’t hold the ball in the air properly but it’s also why the ball straightens itself in flight. The deeper dimples on the side increase air pressure on the sides and lower pressure in the center causes it to travel in the path of less resistance OE low air pressure.
    But yeah they kind of take the fun out the game. And I really like the snell ball black box

    USSR tried centered dimples on jet wing surface design. Great stability, speed, however it was too resistant to directionly changes off the line of flight. That resistance being why the design was not used on future aircraft.

    It's a really cool ball in the sense that it will stay relatively straight even with swings that should clearly produce curved flight. But youre right; At the end of the round, you don't get the satisfaction of good results from YOUR skill. Good results go to the balls skill. Still, very cool product that does as it promises.

    Typically I hit bridgestones. Now I will tell you that I buy them used because they are much cheaper. However, I am a very average golfer and I just love seeing the ball land in the middle of the fairway. I ordered a sleeve these balls to try them out, if they work I will sacrifice a little bit of distance to hit balls straight!! I actually looked up to find out why these golf balls were illegal. As it turns out, this golf ball was invented and patented in 1977 and because of its performance, the major golf ball manufactures went to the USGA to have them banned. The owner of the patent at the time, sued the USGA and multiple years later it was finally settled and they actually won the suit. If they work for me as shown in the video, I’m all in!!

  • @SDBloxham
    @SDBloxham Před 5 lety

    Hi Rob. I think you are right about the spin. I think the balls work by having different depth dimples (less on top and more on side) This I think means for the same amount of spin there is less lift . This will be noticed more on the lower lofted / lower spinning clubs.

  • @wx811
    @wx811 Před 5 lety +1

    It's basically weighting inside the ball, that would explain the dead straight flight but also the nosedive. That's why aligning the arrows is so crucial, because if the weighting is off center it will curve. But it will indeed nosedive because it's just too off in terms of the weighting being screwed up.

    • @RobMcGarr
      @RobMcGarr  Před 5 lety

      I think it's the dimples and the low spin is what makes it fall out of the sky on lower spinning clubs. They claim it'll behave like a normal ball if you don't line it up but I'm not convinced!

    • @wx811
      @wx811 Před 5 lety

      You have to remember that the reason a ball flies either upward, downward, or sideways is 100 percent spin. Dimples simply increase airflow, which propels it slightly farther. To say dimples affect flight patterns is completely false. It's all spin, and the only way to get the ball to spin perfectly vertically is through weighting, or a perfect swing.

    • @wx811
      @wx811 Před 5 lety

      I also find that since the shorter clubs worked better for distance than the longer clubs was the extra backspin, which negated some of the weight bearing down. I will have to find some way to explain this better and simpler.
      But don't buy into what the market tells you. It's like Callaway dimples vs Titleist. Completely different, fly the same.

    Hi Rob, I recently tried the Seed SD-02. I really like the feel of them and their flight is also pretty nice. ProVs would probably be my ball of choice (although the ProVx seems to fly too high for me) and these seeds are not disimilar in feel. I also like the feel of the TP5's but I've not played much with them. However, I have the sensation that the Seed balls are slightly shorter that the ProV's….nothing too dramatic but perhaps 5 yards or so on a 260-280 drive. I reckon that in my hands (pockets, bag or wherever they may be) Bridgestone are the longest balls and I also like the feel of them. As you can see, I'm in the same pickle as you….If money were no object I think I would play exclusively ProV's but if money is a concern, give the Seed balls a try.....They also spin nicely and hold greens pretty well, a department in which I find many other cheaper balls fail!

    Rob, if you're struggling at the moment I'd recommend buying lake balls on line. I usually use Titleist NXT tour. Pearl grade lake balls from Premier Lake balls work out at about a quid each plus postage if you buy 40. They also do Prov1's at about 2 quid. I'm a 10 HC so these are fine for me. They actually look as though they've never been hit.

    I use Srixon soft feel. I found one once and had one of those rare good days with it, so I stuck with those. While my ball striking is nowhere near consistent enough for balls to make a huge difference, my lag putting is pretty good and I'd be loathe to change ball for that reason alone

      Funny how people fall into those traps, thinking it will help them. I think the square strike wedge is the same, as if you hit behind everything anyhow, it'll do you in regardless.
      As far as training aids go, as another trap people get into, I find the orange whip, tour striker, and 300 yard impact as prime examples, are just gimmicks to get you to buy something from these poor instructors who can't teach. It's a lazy tactic by said instructors, as they seem to think I'm stupid enough to believe they know the golf swing enough to teach it, and yet tell me to use some weird tool to "get a feel for the concept". It's all BS, and some people are stupid enough to fall for it.
