- Farmer’s Weekly recently hosted a webinar on getting started with goat farming for aspiring and established goat farmers.
An expert panel of speakers joined the webinar; Antoinette Dry, a Kalahari Red goat breeder from Pretoria; Kehentse Mosimanyane, a Boer Goat farmer from Morokweng; Gerhard Lourens, an indigenous veld goat breeder in Waterval; and Selinah Khutso Ntjana, an author and a smallscale Boer Goat farmer in Limpopo, to discuss four key topics: goat breeding, goat products, mentorship, and marketing strategies.
The webinar aimed to provide practical and relevant information on how to start and grow a successful goat farming business. The recording of the webinar is available for anyone who wants to learn more about this industry.

One thing I'm wondering is if pure bred dogs get hip dyslexia because of in breading over year and other health issues, why would you do it with farm animals? What precautions are in place to avoid this?

Hi I am new farmer I started farming with goats this year only, which is February 2024.I am farming in Namibia. I bought few goats from individuals mostly of my goats are Boergoats, I bought one Kalahari red ewe which when I bought it she was already pregnant. To my disappointment she gave birth to the twins, however soon I received a call from my workers that the mothers seems her teets have no holes on them hence unable to feed her kids.I drove the day followed and bought lamlack in Agra shop.However the family kid died only after twodays of birth.My question is what causes ewes not to have holes? The mother had so much milk looking at her udder however no milk was coming out.Now the remaining kid is doing very well as he is being bottle fed with lamlack.I grew up raising goats in communal areas.However this is my first time seeing this type of a situation. Experience farmers I consulted told it is a situation do occur in goats but once it happens, it cannot be turned around.
This condition is referred to as ‘blind nipples/teats’. This condition disqualifies ewes from being functional breeding animals and is usually a genetic trait, but can also be caused by injury, infection, or from scar tissue resulting from such injury or disease. I am a starter and finding it difficult to aquire money for training. Anyone to recommend a free training either on line or face to face,I am based in Namibia any help is highly appreciated. Thanks.
Good day farmer, it will be hard to find free training unless you check with your Ministry of Agriculture if they don't have such pieces of training or even material that you can read on your own. What I can offer myself is to share my experiences of what I know and we can continue to learn together. All the best farmer
