  • It's time to start our flock for next season. These chicks will grow up to be our parent flock for next year, laying the eggs we hatch and ship to our customers as day-old baby chicks. In this video, take a look inside our chick brooder room at our new barn with McMurray Hatchery owner Tom Watkins. McMurray Hatchery is a family-owned business and we have been raising and caring for our own parent flocks, and hatching day-old baby chicks for over a century.

    That's a cool setup. It is evident that McMurray is dedicated to taking great care of their birds, which are of excellent quality.
    On a side note, I've been super pleased with my chickens from McMurray. Ordered my first batch of 25 this year, which shipped at the very end of February. All but one survived, and the remaining birds are thriving and laying eggs like crazy. I couldn't be more pleased, and will be sure to buy from McMurray again.

    I'm in Georgia. I work for a commercial chicken hatchery. I did work for the processing plant so that I could learn the processing part of the industry. I like the hatchery part better. I have a very small incubator, only 54 eggs. I have a small farm call Rod and Staff Farm, we also start a CZcams channel. We have chickens, ducks, turkeys, bees, and Jacob sheep. We are currently on day two on incubating eight duck eggs and 16 chicken eggs. Most of our birds that we've hatched are mixes. Our hens and roosters are pure but everyone runs together. I know the commercial meat part. At about 25 or 26 weeks we pull the eggs to incubate. At about 54 weeks we sell the hens and roosters and get new birds for laying. Is this the same time for your side of the industry?

      Yes, the chicks are loud so it's tough to adjust the sound.

    • @McMurrayHatchery
      @McMurrayHatchery  Před 3 lety +1

      Just had a conversation with the APA and he reminded me of the rule of 10 - for every ten chicks you'll have one that is what you're looking for. To answer your question, we are continuously working our flocks and selecting for standard. We actually have a poultry judge who is working our flock and doing the selecting. That said, as you know it can take several generations to work on a trait, especially when you have 100+ breeds/varieties. I do have quite a few that I'd recommend raising for show and happy to discuss those with you any time -- just give us a call and ask for marketing.
