    Update: I picked up my chicks on April 8th at our local post office. Got them home and opened the box.......9 of 16 were dead and trampled. Talk about traumatizing! Another one died that night and another the next day. So very sad and disappointed. Apparently, they had a really rough trip. McMurray offered to send me new chicks, but I couldn’t handle the stress of that again so they refunded my $. I know that most are very successfully shipped, but my experience has me vowing to never order again! Original post: Mine are supposed to be hatched on April 6th! I loved that video, very informative and the sound of all the babies was great. We got baby chicks and geese from you folks many times years ago, all our flocks were very good producers, and I can't tell you how many times we had to go out and shoo the geese away so company could come in, it still brings a broad smile to my face..... I know it can look rough from a video but I can assure you our team takes the utmost care with our flock and chicks. As for your losses it can be a variety of issues. Obviously I can't speak to your situation but here are some things that can affect them: strength and viability of the chick/flock, weather, handling, delay in shipping, issues in a brooder, accidents, failure to thrive, unknown development issues, nutrition and water, etc. The list goes on. @McMurrayHatchery  Před 4 lety +7

      In the colder months of February and March we ship 25 chicks together. Over our many years of experience we have found that they need a certain number of chicks to not only keep each other warm, but also act as cushions for each other during shipping. We also supplement each box with heat packs and extra cardboard lining in the shipping box as needed. It's a balance of warmth but also not letting them get too hot and sweaty as that can be even more harmful to them.

    • @McMurrayHatchery
      @McMurrayHatchery  Před 4 lety +3

      Because we raise and hatch mostly rare breeds, each breed has a different hatch rate - which helps explain why they are rare breeds. As they hatch, they need to stay in the hatcher until they are dry which can take several hours. By the time we pull the chicks and they are all dried out and ready for shipping, it's pretty obvious if the others are not going to hatch at that point. We take great care to ensure the highest hatchability for all of our breeds, but nature sometimes has another plan. Any who don't hatch right are humanely put to sleep.
