    Nice review. I recently vertical tasted the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Ch. Lillian Ladouys. The 2019 was the standout. Followed by the 2018. The 2020 was showing too young, even after an hour in the decanter. Actually all the wines spent an hour in the decanter prior to tasting. The 2019 had it all, intriguing nose, power and complexity. The 2018 was more elegant, balanced and floral. In the glass all three possessed a deep, ink like color which I always look for in a wine. I’m sitting on a mixed case and will revisit in 2025.

      rjo8500: thank you for the tasting notes. I am beginning to think 2017 is an early drinking vintage and the 2018-2020 is a really a good stretch for Bordeaux. Cheers!

    I discovered this in the 2010 vintage and it became my favorite non-class growth Left Bank. It had massive structure and power. Right now, 12 years on, the 2010 seems a bit shut down and isn’t showing fruit, but I have hope it will go into a second phase in a few years. I’ve tried the 2016 vintage too and it’s also very good-similar to 2010 in many ways. This can be found for $22-25US and that’s a fantastic price for it.

      Oh, and in case anyone is curious, it is pronounced “La-dwees” to rhyme with “fleece.” (Incidentally I see some people leave off the S on the end in pronunciation but everyone at the winery itself pronounces the S.)

      @@ModularLanding thanks for your comments. I always have issues with pronouncing French wineries correctly mostly because most people I drink with pronounce a different way! So there is a correct pronunciation and then alternate forms of consumer pronunciations. I previously just pronounced it phonetically so "Lillian La dwa" but I have heard it pronounced "Lillian La dose". That is part of the issue with Old World wines...people get intimated when then can't pronounce it correctly, then get shamed by French or Italian people when they pronounce it incorrectly so most people stick to wine they can pronounce made with the Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Then the French and Italians complain consumers don't understand their wine!
      I am not saying that wineries should change their name but they should be aware when their name is hard to pronounce and have an easier to pronounce "nickname". That would increase sales of their wines instantaneously, especially considering most of the world's population doesn't speak English, let alone French.
      I think Lilian Ladouys is a good wine at that price. I don't think it will ever skyrocket into Trophy wine level but it is a really solid wine, as long is the price doesn't climb too much. Cheers!

      Cory Z: yes some of the earliest videos are frankly embarrassing! Plan to phase them out by doing updated tastings of these wines and archiving old tastings. Cheers!

      @@coryz6880 I talked about it a bit in my June update but I am holding off as I am not convinced 2022 is as good as people say it is. Bordeaux is also on the decline in consumers attitude (nothing wrong with wine but not an "in" region right now) and prices are not that spectacular so I am pulling back. Seems like a lot of other high investors are doing the same....that is why you are seeing so much hype around 2022 Bordeaux...I don't think the en primeur is going that well and they are leaning on critics/experts to get the word out. Cheers!

      @@TrophyWineHunter - Interesting take. I think prices are high due to the very low yields. In some instances 30% lower yields due to the very hot weather. Time will tell how these wines will evolve and taste. It has always fascinated me how the wine critics can taste and score a wine out of barrel. The wine is unfinished and extremely tannic.

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Před rokem +1

      @@coryz6880 I have tasted en primeur and also when wines are first released. I think it is just experience and saying "this reminds me of _____". I was actually told by a certain winemaker that my group had more experience tasting en primeur than a notable wine critic.
      Balance will come with time but what you are looking for is great acidity, ripe fruit, great mid palate and smooth tannins. It will be all over the place but generally, if it takes good out of the barrel, it is too soft and won't last. In fact, I should barely be able to taste any flavors out of the barrel other than tannins, mid palate, acidity and texture. In a way, it is an unfinished wine so you are looking at the raw components.
      What has me questioning 2022 vintage is that it was incredibly hot....that mean high alcohol and overripe fruit. I don't see any critics mentioning this which is peculiar. They also don't mention balance. So if you have hot weather and low yields, that means to me a lot of spoilage (hot weather should produce high yields). That to me means grapes ripened to early and got jammy too fast. So basically they are saying it is a great vintage like 2018 or 2016 but without any rationale. It is what they are not saying which has me questioning the vintage.
      I think there is a tremendous pressure to bring back people to buy Bordeaux after COVID and an off vintage of 2021. I don't think 2022 en primeur campaign has gone that well (because of the world markets) so the critics are doing more than usual to hype the vintage. I am concerned that in a few years, it will be a vintage where the fruit is jammy. Even if it is a great vintage, it is already priced like it so nowhere to go but down in price (in my opinion). Cheers!

    $55?! It was $29 at Costco. Not a wine expert, but didn't care for it. The tannins weren't as aggressive as some of the reviews though.

I would agree with you but a lot of people are very big on this wine. Keep watching and like/subscribe if you like what I am doing. Cheers!
