- Here is the championship match of the final ESPN PBA broadcast for the year 1990. It took place in Hall of Fame Lanes, a center located in Canton, Ohio. It features Earl Anthony and John Hricsina.

Earl Anthony was my favorite pro bowler when I was a kid. He had ice water in his veins, just stayed cool even when things were going against him. About a month after he died, I went bowling and rolled a 220 in the first game - I dedicated that one to his memory.

Earl Anthony in my personal humble opinion is the Babe Ruth of PBA Pro Bowling. RIP. You are indeed missed but never forgotten. Favourite PBA Pro Bowler along with Nelson Burton Jr.

Watching Earl bowl is really a treat. Next to David Weber, he was one of the greatest technical bowlers ever. A pure stroker.
Dick Weber, of course. He was my early favorite too. Earl was a bit better IMHO.

For about 10 years, before his knees gave out, Don Carter was super human. The best ever...until Earl Anthony. But for a single year, it's hard to beat...Billy Hardwick Jr. in 1969. Walter Ray Williams was awesome, but he benefitted from the decline in ability among bowlers that began in the 2000s.
David Weber? Did you mean Dick Weber? Don Johnson was great to watch also with his 299 game. Not sure if Philip Michael Thomas was a bowler though? Oops, got him mixed up with another Don Johnson.
Earl was so amazing; so dominant for years but also so gracious. If this recording continued, Earl hugged the proprietor & proclaimed her to be the class act of the bowling business... even though Earl coowned a California center. Earl was the class act!!
I used to have the original telecast on VHS. The ESPN classic version chopped off that ending you made references to. The senior tour bowlers loved Janet Buehler, the proprietor of this center because she treated them really well. Hall of Fame Lanes hosted the Senior Championship event from its inaugural event in the early 1980's-1990. After that, this tournament moved to M 66 Bowl in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1991, Thruway Lanes in Upstate, NY in 1992, and in various centers in Florida thereafter. I read that Janet passed away.

Earl was and still is the best bowler to ever be on the Lanes. Even chatting w Marshall Holman online he told ne he both has bowled against Walter Ray and Earl. He told me he gives the nod to Earl being the greatest. I remember watching the PBA Tour growing up as a child. Bowling always meant a great deal to me and my kids. Spent many years watching my kids bowl and instructing. Looking back my goal was to get that " Perfect Game" ..I got 2 of them and was propelled by watching these greats bowl!
I did win a tournament over 3 week period made cover of local bowler flyer...These Bowlers had the calmness and the respect of the fans. .. Do I put on the PBA Tour now yes I do tho I don't watch it religiously. Fond memories growing up.

Earl Anthony was the working mans hero, me and my dad watched every weekend.Miss him sooooo much.
He did show some emotion about 6 minutes in when his shot went right of target. If this was Holman the foul light would have been gone.

People point out about the "left advantage" , however Earl often was a top qualifier when no other lefty was in the Top 24 . Truly a once in a lifetime talent!
Talented and not flashy!!! Bowled against others who had a lot more power but he just had the best mental game!!! Don't get me wrong, he bowled against some of the all time greats we've seen and still had the class and respect from everyone.
The lefty advantage is a myth. Very rarely is the shot going to favor the left. He was just that good.

I'm looking at that graphic that says he made only slightly less than 1.4 million in 20 years. With Tournament entry fees traveling with wife, home expenses etc. I can't believe that he didn't make more than 1.4 million that seems like a total disgrace for tournament payouts from 1970s to 1990 . there's no way in hell that he was living up a luxury life on 70,000 per year minus taxes and expenses. Earl obviously Did It For the Love of the Game and for that I congratulate him as very few athletes today Do Anything For the Love of the Game.
To be fair, inflation was muchh lower back then.
But the huge majority, about 1.1, was between 71 and 83, do he did just fine. And that's not including appearance fees and endorsements.

Used to watch earl and dick Weber on the ABC’s wide world of sports with my dad on Saturday afternoons. Those were the good old days. RIP Jim Ridout, Earl, And Dick.
Earl Anthony, reminded me of Tom Landry. Both so cool and I always respected both of them. After that fall off the roof he was never the same,like Simplot falling in his chair at the Fiesta bowl.

Muscle memory is a great thing like Earl said. I started bowling at around 9 years old on an instructional league at Blue Crystal lanes on Bank st about a half mile from my house that was on poplar Pl off Stockbridge rd in Kalamazoo MI. Stockbridge rd crossed Bank St where Blue Crystal lanes bowling ally was. I was born on 6-19-1958 so when I was 9 yrs old it was 1967 in the summer on a summer league. I have always been in top physical condition even today 9-29-21. I enjoy bowling 30 games within 3 hours for the workout & to keep in shape. I'm like Earl said muscle memory. my high game is a 299. I KNOW I need to practice a lot more to get 300 games more often I hope oh wait at lest once any how heheheHA! I have bowled 33 games within 3 hours of Glow Ball that my highest amount of games within 3 hours. I have bowled 150 straight non stop games. I know of a few good bowlers in Kalamazoo MI: Charly Tapp, wes Gibson/dr hook & the guy with the most 300's in Kalamazoo & the surrounding area Dean Cardella he bowled a 300 when his team bowled my team at Hapo's lanes its the first live 300 I ever saw bowled oh yeah Randy Rawlson & his son Adam. Adam & Dave Clinginpeel bowled on my summer league or I mean we bowled on Clinginpeels team hes a 230 or 240 avg bowler. any how I like to bowl at continental lanes in the summer because all open bowling is FREE so in the summer I bowl 30 games daily I am 63 years old & enjoy it. I was sorry to hear Dr Hook died of lug cancer about 3 years ago, DAM! he use to drill my bowling balls I had 63 balls at that time then I sold them all & this year 2021 I did really good in the stock market & bought 30 new bowling balls heheheha! & got back into bowling again after a long streak of not bowling from 2007 to April of this year 2021. I am so glad Im still in top physicals condition even today 9-29-21 YEAH! I've had the front 8 so far, the back 7, back 5 a couple times with a high game of 249 on leauge & a high game of 256 on open. I probably bowled a thousand games this summer. when you bowl 30 games like that its your legs that you feel the most. I never feel it in my arms or hands, its your legs & I went 20 miles EVERY day on my peddle bike since 2014 because that's all I had & I slept outside every single day in a sleeping bag before I bought my truck on March 6th this year 2021. I slept outside & had to get up at 2am 7 days a week to go 2 miles to FedEx until I retired on 10-17-20. I'm am retired now & for the rest of my life. if you need a bowler: right now I'm about a 160 avg bowler. I bowled 570 this TU so it will go up a little. before I stopped bowling in 2007 I was a 180 to 190 bowler. if you need a bowler I can bowl any day or time I'm retired just let me know when & were. I live in my truck it wired with everything I need to live. its a 2002, Ford with a V10, black 4 wheel drive with 8' bed that has a box on the back with a door in the back. I'm 150lbs & 5'3.75 tall so I made the box on the 8' bed of my truck 5'5" tall so I can stand up & walk around without touching the ceiling . its nice with a 35 gallon gas tank. let me know when & were I'll come bowl. I made some nice money in the stock market the most I ever made in one year of working EVER by the end of April this year 2021 YEAH! let me know when & were to bowl on a team FULL time only I don't do subbing! I ONLY do every week league bowling. I will be there EVERY week with the cash! I DO NOT MISS days or nights. just respond to this comment thanks oh another guy I know because he use to bowl right next to me during the summer this year is Tom Youngblood in Kalamazoo MI. I think he said hes like 56 years old & wants to bowl on the senior tour. I'm a vary YOUNG 63 & in shape! my Name is Dann Watts I graduated a couple years ago in 1977 from Loy Norrix on Kilgore rd that was the HAPPEST day of my life getting out of school but then since I got paid to go I went to KVCC for 2.5 more years. school aint that bad when your paid to go.

Then till last summer, July 2023, joined two leagues.
It's amazing I still had it after all these years.
Qualified to bowl in the senior tournament in Vegas 2024.
Was Earl a full time Senior Tour competitor?
I know he was doing commentary at the time; first with Jay Randolph on NBC from 84-91; then with Mike Durbin on ESPN from 92-97.
In 1990, the senior tour only had 8 events. If I recall correctly, this was the final senior tour event for the year and it took place in August. Earl retired from senior tour events in the summer of 1991.
He bowled in 6 of the 8 Tournaments in 1990 skipping 2 because they only paid $5K to win. He won 3 of the 6 which was the most of any player, was the leading money winner and had the highest average yet LOST player of the year to the guy you see him beating here, got completely shafted

Does anyone know how Earl felt about the reactive resin balls when they first came out?
I remember Earl and Mike Durbin compared the resin balls to the aluminium bats used in baseball
I loved watch Earl bowl and I honestly think that I have seen every televised match and I am confused about one thing. I have read articles saying that Earl was very versatile and always figured out how to play the lane but, I have never seen Earl play anything but second arrow on the left with a medium hook, usually laying the ball down close to the foul line. I've never seen him bowl to the inside with a bigger hook.
Is it because the lanes back then were usually lacquer all the way down?
Probably a product of the lanes and the equipment he had at his disposal. There was a telecast (Cleveland, 1979) where the right-handers were playing between the fourth and fifth arrows. Earl's line was in between the third and fourth arrows.

There are some shows on CZcams where Earl is playing the 4th arrow. Dig around and you’ll see why he was the greatest.
I just realized that Earl's quick start in his approach somewhat resembles that of the late Joe Joseph. Earl wasted no time. He was always ready, confident, and knew exactly what to do.
Funny, Walter Ray is similar. Two pros who know what they're doing before they even started their approach.

Not only was Earl the greatest bowler of all time, but he was also a scratch golfer. It's a shame he passed away after that fall down a flight of stairs. He was way too young.

Do you have any videos with Carol Norman? She was part of our group when we started bowling in the 70's. I have found a couple of videos but would like to see more. I have 2 of her bowling balls and one I use often in league.

Mark Roth changed the game,,,is the babe Ruth of bowling period. Every bowler tried to copy Roth and his style and the patterns today and balls are due to his greatness with a plastic ball with crappy lane conditions. Earl was great but did not change the game or influence people like Roth and his power
You are right, I loved watching Mark Roth, he was an animal, but Earl was to me simply the greatest and has the stat to prove it!
I love Roth. Bowled a pro-am with him when I was a kid. Greatest cranker ever.
But, Earl will always be the GOAT to me. He proved throughout his career that you didn't need to crank a ball to 9000 rpms to routinely put ten in the pit and win a massive amount of titles. Just smoothly send it down over the second arrow and in on the back end. Earl didn't even start his pro career until he was in his 30's...and still won a massive 43 titles in just 14 years. Can't imagine how many he'd have won if he started as young as these kids do now.

At the very end it appears that Hricsina purposely ignored Anthony's attempt to shake hands (no eye contact), and pulled away without acknowledging him at all. Seems very unprofessional. Was there bad blood between the two of them?
They had already shaken hands when Hricsina got up to bowl his last frame. I think Hrcsina was just stepping aside at the end while Earl waited to be interviewed.

When did ESPN stop telecasting bowling, growing up it was my favorite show on Saturday,now they show cricket, really,I wouldn't watch a cricket match if it played across the street.I live in Lawrence Massachusetts,and they had a great bowling alley called Stadium Lanes,with a bar and every Saturday morning my brother and friends would bowl on Saturday morning,5 dollars for 3 strings and buck for shoes,to go bowling now, you have to rob a bank,I did fine out years later the owners were offered a great deal of money,was originally turn into Movie theater,and now there's like 6 different stores,bowling is a great way to meet friends and have a fun time, wish ESPN would bring it back, cricket really,
