  • Swallowed is a song by the British rock band Bush, released in 1996 as the lead single from their second album, Razorblade Suitcase. The song was written by the band’s lead singer and guitarist, Gavin Rossdale, who described it as a reflection of his feelings of being overwhelmed by success and fame after their debut album, Sixteen Stone, became a huge hit in the US. The song also explores the themes of love, addiction, and isolation, as Rossdale sings about being “swallowed” by his emotions and losing himself in his relationships.
Swallowed is one of Bush’s most successful and popular songs, reaching number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also received positive reviews from critics, who praised its raw and powerful sound, influenced by producer Steve Albani’s work with bands like Nirvana and Pixies.
Interestingly, Bush were originally called Future Primitive, but they changed their name to Bush after signing with an American record label, because they thought it would be easier to remember and more appealing to the US audience. However, they later faced some legal issues with another band called Bush, who had been active since the 1970s and claimed the rights to the name. The dispute was eventually settled, and the British band agreed to use the name Bush X in Canada, where the original Bush had a strong fan base.
