Building the front fascia on the Alaska cabin

- Welcome back folks!
This week finds me building the front fascia on the Alaska cabin and looking for my motivation!
All the work going forward is leading to 1 thing...getting metal on the roof, but as I work on the little things I am beginning to see the many things I have missed!
I am a complete novice builder who grew up in sunny California and thought it would be an awesome idea to build my own off grid cabin on raw land in Alaska...what could go wrong?
I have never built a thing in my life so why not a house? OH! and I can live in a trailer while I do it....and work full time! Did I mention that I am out of shape, over weight and 60? What could go wrong?

Coffee, ponder life’s greatest mysteries… more coffee than start with the easy tasks. Before you know your plans all come together. Happy Friday ☕️😎👍
Coffee pretty much fixes everything Joseph lol...happy Friday!
It isn't being nervous, but smart being safe. I took a fall working construction 40 years ago and have daily suffered pain since. You cannot be too careful! There are NO do overs after a fall. Looks Great!
So true!
Love your choice of music. Keeps me completely entranced in watching what you do
Thank you for that! I do try and make sure the music actually fits well 😀
No ill intent, just suggestions to make it a little easier. I love what you're doing.
Ill
None taken! And I appreciate the input...I really do!
Hi sean take care up there bless🖐️❤️
Always Grace!!
Helpful hint. House wrap should be shingled . Upper layer should overlap lower layer to allow condensation to run off and not rot wood underneath.
I realized that after the fact! Lol...thanks though...I will take any advice I can get!
You & Todd are doing Great team work. Everything is looking really good. I’m very impressed by your accomplishments 😊
Todd is a great guy!
Heights make me nervous. But you got it done ✔️. Its going very well Mr. Sean. Looking very nice every video i watch. I think watching you do this and getting all you want to do done. You maybe be helping others who maybe soing there for the first time as well. Love hearing the rooster and Ladies, Black Beauty's when you making a video. Your rooster is loud and i love it. Hes a proud one for sure. Have a great one. See you next video Mr. Sean.
Have a great week Karen!!
Sunshine and I went for an ice cream cone from Big John's. Very yummy and great cost! Thanks for the hook up 🎉!
Great.... now I want an ice cream hahhahahhaha
Lookin forward to seeing that roof done...probably not as much as you Sean.....camp is lookin good!
You and me both! Lol...
I found your channel by accident after watching several I subscribed. I have seen to many off Grid cabin builds where they show up with their own back hoes and skid steers then call a road builder to clear their site then put up a log home kit or a 40x 60 metel building connect to electric and internet asay off grid. Keep up the great work and inspire others to follow you
Hey...if I had the money....hahhahah....not really, where is the fun in that?
Vary awesome indeed. Everything is looking awesome indeed. I know up high is vary dangerous indeed putting paper by yourself. Keep up the great work .
Thanks Kevin! I do try and be safe.
I watched while holding my breath as you were up So high!! Such a fine Home Sean!!! I've been foraging in woods and picked blackberries and choke cherries so far for jelly, jam and juice for winter. Busy in gardens too.
Stay safe and strong!! See you on your next video!! Well done Sean!!!
The scaffolding is pretty steady, but it does get a but wonky that high up hahahhahaha....
What a beautiful job! You are making so much progress, Sean! Thanks for showing us.
Thanks Karen, it seems to happen on spurts lol..
So glad to see you get help (Todd) Sean. No need to be trying things alone at that height.!
Completely agree Al! I may be an idiot, but never stupid hahhahHhA...
I agree too, Manonthestreet!!!!👍👍😍
❤️
You forgot to go under the Tyvek on the gable.
I did, but I am taping it all at the seams so I should be good. Nice catch! Lol
Another hard day of work in the bush. That rooster is begging to become chicken and dumplings. Be careful up there Brother, see ye next week.
Yeah.....he has about reached his end lol...always careful on the high spots, I am too old to fall hahahhahaha
Good work on planning ahead with the safety elements.
Taking chances with safety is just not worth it!
Good job Sean and the cabin is taking shape. Coffee ☕is always good for the morning soul. 👍
I truly love that first cup of the day lol...
Sean, you couldn’t hear me telling you to put the tyvek under the top one? Maybe you have a better idea, anyway, tyvek is hard for one person, like trying to staple a sail, for two people one always gets a finger stapled, don’t ask me how I know! Nice work on those facia boards, happy you got Todd to come over, looks really nice, great job!
I had planned to slide it under...but I am taping all the seams anyway so I opted for the easy way lol....
It's looking good. Nice job. 👍
Thank you!
I'll tell ya, that rooster wouldn't last long at my place. He'd become a hot chicken dinner real quickly. Great work Sean ! You are certainly making good progress.
Oh....he is going to freezer camp really soon lol
@@SeanInAlaska Ha ! Ha ! Ha ! 👌🤣
😂🤣😂
Starting to look like a roof! Lol. I just ordered my metal. Should be in next week. Dont let me get ahead of ya! Haha! No chance of that anyways. I don't have crap done on the inside. Lol
I am not in a hurry! Lol....it is a marathon, not a sprint youngster hahahahahha
Ur house looks awesome thanks for sharing this with us
Thanks for watching!!
Love it, Sean!
❤️
This is looking really good Sean!! So much progress!!
Thank you Kristin!!!!
Your noisy birds have made me realize my free loaders haven't been making any noises for several weeks. No crowing, nothing. Only found 1 egg in over a week. I'm over this heat. And breaking your neck would be overkill. Just went to the doctor and my wrist is no longer broken, it has healed nicely. Believe me, a broken wrist is more then enough fun.
I have broken my wrist and I completely agree lol...I would appreciate a little silence from the chickens now and then lol...
Todd the Bod is back! So…I’ve watched all your building videos and loved every minute.
Can you recommend other channels to watch that are similar and that gave you inspiration?
Thanks for your hard work. We appreciate you
Thank you so much! Ok....in no particular order... @Mapleberry Farms, @Jay and Jen offgrid, @Kyles cabin, @Theoutsider, @Bushradical and the list goes on!!! Lol Oh, and for the serious stuff... My Self Reliance hahhahhahah
@@SeanInAlaskaI watch those too!!! So I'm in good company Sean😁💙♥️🥰
@@judyschepp8748 that was only a partial list lol
We also secure the scaffolding up higher to the house with hooks and some leftover romex. Just to prevent tip over
Good call....I will do that on the current setup!
Nice, to high for me, take care and stay safe
❤️
Git r done son!!!! 👋😎👍
Yes sir!!! Hahahahaha....
Hard work.. but you made it look easy Mr Sean.. hi how are ya?.. saw you catch of the day.. looked fantastic.. happy weekend to you..❤️☮️
I am heading out to see if the river has more ro share this weekend lol....hope you are well Yvonne!
Love the progress but would have a rooster stew. lol
I am thinking tamales...lol
Great job Sean - how close your neighbor in front of your cabin?
50 yards? But they are almost never there lol....
...l Iike your coffee tabIe :)
🤣😂🤣
Fantastic!!! You rock 😊
❤️❤️❤️
What has been the most challenging part so far? Love the videos. Thanks
The roof, by far the biggest pain lol...and thank you!
Hi, just found your channel, can’t believe you don’t have building skills .you sure do and a ton of common sense. I feel every grunt and groan too😁☕️
The grunts and groans take their toll hahahhaha...and yup, this is my first ever project, not counting the chicken coop lol. I will tell you what...this is FUN!
You definitely need to try yourself up with a safety doing it yourself I've been in your shoes it's not fun but God bless you on this build you did a great job
❤️
It’s looking good, what will you do for the porch?
I’ve always appreciated a nice screened in porch to relax on.
I will cover it in eventually, but not close it in. I like the open look
When the rooster crows during the day, somebody may be coming to visit you?
I think he is just taunting me at this point haahhaahha
Hi l
was scared for you 😰😰
When you were up high please be careful xx
I always make sure I am as safe as I can be 😀
You’ve made great progress Sean and it’s always a good thing when you’ve got a pro-active bro. I was wondering, are you gonna tuck tape the seems of the Tyvek?
I am taping all the seams!
@@SeanInAlaska Good on you Sean, the build is looking real decent! Mind me asking… what kind of exterior tape will you be using?
Tyvek tape. I had a roll I was using before but I lost it lol...so I bought a new one.
@@SeanInAlaska I hate when that happens but it looks like your on the right track… as for me, finished installing the floors and now on to continuing sanding the oak wood cabinets… never ending but love it!
There is just something about working with wood!
You're coming right along!!
I wanted to ask, but hope I'm not getting to personal...
But, how much is it costing to do this house? And are you buying everything, some, or minimal items from the store/hardware store?
Trying to guage and plan 😊
Thanks, I have no problem sharing this. Metal for the roof and all I figure I am at about 20k based on what I had when I started...maybe 25k. I am buying most of my lumber from the orange store lol... Home Depot. I paid 2100 for the driveway work and the gravel but the rest I have done on weekends and after work each day.
Oh wow!! Is that just for the roof/front part ur doing now?
If so, then the entire project is quite costly, considering what and how you want things, I'm assuming then. Can't wait to see the finished project!!
No, that is for everything to date....the complete build to this point minus the land. Woodstove and all
@SeanInAlaska now that is some good news!! I always had the thought, if u built like this, up there, then u would be out a LARGE sum of money....you sir just made the motivation needle jump!!
I will put more into it...but it is always reasonable if you do it yourself!
so roof on before winter yayyyyyyy, will you be installing the logfire/woodburner before winter too and if so will u buy wood this year? and does the woodburner burn just wood or does it have a grate in it for coal?
Yup, roof on before winter...stove in before winter and I will most likely purchase some wood to go along with what I cut myself. I am not sure if this stove burns coal or not lol there is no grate in it but I have read it will
I thought you were going to tuck under the middle strip of Tyvek. You even left the upper piece loose at the bottom for this... Does it make a difference to lap the Tyvek?
I literally forgot when I got to that stage and then stapled it all off. I am taping all the seams though so I should be ok! Sometimes I get in too big of a hurry lol
the first thing I would do is eliminate the roster.
That problem is now solved 😉
Howdy Sean!! Enjoy those 70-degree days buddy!! You know how hot it is down here... Did you buy that scaffolding, or rent it??
Yeah, I have no idea how people in triple digits survive hahahhaha. I borrowed the scaffolding from a friend who was in no hurry to get it back lol....
@@SeanInAlaska That's cool that you knew someone that you could borrow the scaffolding from!! I really like how you used the pieces of 2X4 to block the scaffold legs so that they didn't slip over the edge and make for a very bad day!! Honestly Sean, I don't know how I'm surviving in this heat. We went out to eat this evening and just walking from the parking lot in and out in 110 degree heat totally drained me! and we're not even to the hottest part of the year... everything in the yards is dead... grass is crunchy brown or just dust; trees are dying, shrubs are dying, I can't let the dogs out for more than 5 minutes for fear of them having heat strokes... and there is no relief in sight... sadly, about all that breaks these horrific heat waves is a hurricane coming ashore from the Gulf in close proximity... and I don't wish that on anyone either. It would be like southern California - mud slides, wide spread power outages, flooding... Nope buddy, I'm coming your way next spring come Hell (which is already here) or high water!!
Ugh...I would pretty much just stay in an ac house lol
@@SeanInAlaska Yep!!!
👍
R u going to put a gutter on that u can catch rain water?? Or put a well in???
Yes and yes! A gutter and eventually a well 😀
What do you chew Sean, I see the can ring in your back pocket, why didn't you pull up your step ladder to go to the top, safer and easier than what you were doing, you can use planks ,not just the rails you were using. It looked tough, and you edited out the next few times, you aren't a spring chicken anymore lol.
I stopped being a spring chicken 10 yeats or more ago lol....Grizzly fine cut 😉 the smaller ladder will be used on the backside but I didn't really need it here. The main reason I edited it out is simple really....climbing down to turn the dang camera off and on was a pain hahahhaha...
🇳🇴👍👍👌🥇
👍🤘🦟😁
dont fall ,lol
😂🤣😂
Sounds like you may need fresh chicken for dinner
yup lol...
Oh my gosh I can’t even watch Sean! You’re so high up! Are u wishing you had a one story house? Haha! Yikes!
I am wishing I was 30 again hahhahhahah!
@@SeanInAlaska haha.. too funny
😂🤣😂
BBQ? Roaster is getting very annoying!
I can 100% promise that problem is solved going forward 😉
👍 nice
You know you rock right? Lol...lamps and wire arrived today!!!
I'LL BE BACK TO WATCH WHEN YOU GET RID OF THAT FUC,,KIN ROOSTER
😂🤣😂 oh, he drives me more crazy than he does you hahaha...trust me! All of the build videos and earlier are without him....next week will most likely be his last video 😉
@@SeanInAlaska oooof lol
😂🤣😂
