    If you enjoy war thunder or are looking forward to Microsoft flight simulator 2020, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.
    This video is a review of the Thrustmaster F-18 Hornet Add on Grip. I was sent this stick over a year ago to review by Thrustmaster since they were so kind and did not put a time limit on when to do the review I've waited almost a year to really use it and get use to it before doing the review, this review is based entirely on my thoughts and experiences with this stick they are in on way influenced by Thrustmaster. Thank you for watching and I hope you found the video useful. Much Love.

    I've had my Hornet Grip for over a year and it too has been holding up great. About the weapon select switch and why it feels funny to click it left, The real hornet weapons select switch is a 4-Way hat: Forward, Depress, Aft, Right. It does not move left. Thrustmaster made it into a 5-Way hat to give it the same functionality as the previous Warthog stick. From what I've heard, the Hornet used to have a 3-Way hat switch: Forward, Depress, and Aft for Sparrows, Sidewinders, and Guns but with the introduction of AMRAAMs, they made the switch click to the right. Who knows, Maybe it'll become a true 5-Way hat switch in the Super Hornet with the introduction of new Air-to-Air missiles.

    The actual F18 grip has only 4 actuations on the weapon selector switch. Forward, backward, to the right and push. The added to actuation to the left is an add on from thrustmaster to utilize all the buttons the WH base offers. Which is great. On the real stick the problem with weapon selector is a non factor.

      Fyi, do NOT pay what the scalpers are pushing right now if you don't already have the base and throttle. They are pushing $700 to $1000 for the base A-10 HOTAS which is insane. Normal pricing is $450 to $525 for the setup, + the $200 grip. The base is $150 standalone + grip +$300 for throttle when buying individually.

    I have to weigh in here: if your arm is at the same level or lower than the stick, I would use the f16/a10c stick. It feels (for me at least) easier to handle. This is especially true if you are flying helicopters or a civilian sim.

    • @kilianortmann9979
      @kilianortmann9979 Před 3 lety +6

      The F-16 Stick was designed as a sidestick at a similar level to what you get with a desk mount (only later mounted centrally on the A-10C upgrade).
      The F-15, FA-18 and essentially the AV-8B Harrier share the same stick design ('boeing stick').
      They all have a more traditional center mounted stick with your forearm resting on your thigh, and the stick is rotated about 20 degrees to the left.
      So if you are undecided and can't try both versions out, I agree with Tuning OBD, chose the one that is most similar to your mounting position.
      A lot of research went in to design and position of both sticks, why not profit from that.

    Awesome update, thanks for this vid. On your thoughts on the weapon select 4 way, I believe it is not designed to be moved “left” because it can be depressed. This gives it four ways of switching between the gun, AMRAAM, sidewinder, and sparrow. I could be wrong though!

    In the real Hornet, the weapon select switch is a four-position switch (forward, aft, right, down). There is no left press, so the design of the hat was never intended to support that. Thustmaster uses all five inputs--probably because arbitrarily disabling one would be kind of pointless. You can always just pretend it's a four-way and not use the left press. ;)

    I’ve got both the A-10/Viper grip and the Hornet one, but I don’t have a mounting solution other than on the desktop base plate.
    I find that since it’s a taller stick, and my desk taller than some, my arm is going up at an angle just to hold the stick.
    Without the hand rest that the A-10/Viper stick has, I find it more fatiguing after a while.
    I do swap them out from time to time, just because I love the build quality of the hornet stick so much! But I can’t do extended periods with it.
    That is, until I set up my work station with new desk/desk mounts. (Coming in Nov. )

    Hey the people telling you on your first review(that i understand you didnt bother read). I said again " real f18 stick has no action on weapon select switch to left" look at the to-1 for it. There is no action for weapon selector switch left. Just blank if you use old thrustmaster base you dont even bind anything. For your issue just bind it to show/hide stick or pilot body what so ever. Please dont throw stone on Boeing or any company. And for all who want to use actual real life buttons of this stick(not the replica from Thrustmaster) google "otto-controls" buy what you want they'r all interchangeable. Notice Huge difference on trigger and pickle

    On the real hornet stick that switch (the one with the groves) if I remember right only goes down, forwards, backwards, and inwards (towards the stick) so the only direction where those groves become an issue (trying to press that button away from the stick) isn't well.... An issue.

    Thank you for putting this review together. I've had my F-18 grip for 10 months and I use it almost every day. I use it for DCS, IL2, and recently Star Wars Squadrons which I was afraid to use since there is so much movement going on. I've noticed one slight issue when moving the stick around. I can hear a very quiet click inside the joystick and later on I was feeling the click during movement. I tried tightening the 3 screws that are barely visible on the left side of the stick and the clicking went away. However, after continued use it would come back. The stick cover pieces might be sliding after use but I can't be sure. Please let me know if you've experienced this too. Other than that, the stick is extremely durable and I can't see using any other stick at this point. It's almost perfect.

      I can report exactly the same issue with mine. I've used it since August last year, and it developed this "clicking" after a few months of use. Pulling the stick aft I had a bumping sound, and then pushing it forwards it clicked. Never thought it could be related to loose screws. So I just did what you said, and the "clicking" is gone (for now, at least). It really never affected my flying experience, and besides that, no issues at all. I have to thank you for solving this. Haven't seen it reported anywhere else, and thought mine was the only one doing it.

      @@WilliamBrothers I actually regreased mine a month ago, and the difference is night and day. I was having the sticktion problem as well. Didn't use Nyogel 767A cause I coudn't find it here in Brazil. Instead, I used a good optical instruments synthetic damper grease. I also play Squadrons and was worried about throwing the stick around violently. So what I did was I created a TARGET profile with zoom at 5 and curve at +4. That makes the stick very sensitive at the center, allowing for precise fine movements, but at the same time, it responds quickly away from center. There's also a deadzone at the edges of the axis, which is good, cause you don't need to force the gimbal. I've made a reddit post about in Squadrons subbredit: www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsSquadrons/comments/j6bhky/improved_accuracy_and_maneuverability/

      It's a small 2-way spring-loaded slider, it is also clickable. It can be mapped to any axis. It isn't on the real stick, but it's great for mapping it to your view zoom. I have the push button mapped to return the view to default.

    The f18 stick is a definite "center stick". If you play with the stick on your right this stick isnt nice in the feel because of the curverture.

    Dumb question as Ive found this out with my stick and maybe I need to send it in to get fixed...the weapon selector switch...is it a 4 position switch or should it be a 5 position? I cant get the left button to function, but does it have a left button? The CMS switch on the warthog has 5 buttons I know...that not the case here? Its been bugging me for a while now since Ive had it.

    • @kengou
      @kengou Před 3 lety

    If you guys have any questions about this stick go ahead and comment below I'd be happy to answer as many questions as I can, This stick has been serving me well for about a year and I was super excited to make this review and show you guys my thoughts, like all products its got a few minor issues but even those I think its hard to knock Thrustmaster as it was built in a 1:1 Scale and realistically using the same buttons. Alight guys Hope you found the video useful thank you for watching.
