- Russia is a large and culturally diverse country, with many ethnic groups, each with their own locally developed music. Russian music went through a long history, beginning from ritual folk songs and the sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church. Authentic Russian church folk music is primarily vocal. Russian folk song was an integral part of daily village life. It was sung from morning to night, and reflected the four seasons and significant events in villagers' lives. The performance and promulgation of ethnic music in Russia has a long tradition. Russia today is a multi-ethnic state with over threehundred ethnicities living under one flag. Each of these ethnic groups has their own indigenous folk, sacred and in some cases art music, which can loosely be categorized together under the guise of ethnic roots music, or folk music. This category can further be broken down into folkloric, modern adaptations of folk material and authentic presentations of ethnic music.

Russia not only the greatest land on earth, but to me, as a german, one of the most fascinating nations at all. On the one hand, a great cultural nation, with greatest musicians, composers and poets, philosophers, mathematicians and so on, on the other hand with real heroism, paired with blunt and indignitive brutality, with sometimes anachronistic blunt destruction. But the russion soul, melancholic and warmhearded, with deep understanding for deepest individual mistakes and failing.
Condensed in a traditional music that takes my breath away. Expressing deepest dispair, suffering, and simultanously the unbound will for life and love, pleasure and ecstasis. I`m old now and in my lifetime I knew and loved so many russian women and was always deeply impressed by the wisdom concerning life suffering and failing without complaint these yesterday young women were inspired by.
Music is a form of communication without a material aim, music is the language of our deepest soul.

I recommend searching for "hardingfele" for instrumental music . For modernised versions of old songs, try Gåte (norwegian), Valkyrien Allstars (norwegian, use old instruments but make new music) and Garmarna (swedish).

I am a Fan of the Russian Culture and history, Russia is good country, despite what the west makes it out to be, i still like russia, and i also like the USSR, idc what ppl say, USSR was a good nation and it was the best version of Russia, the 70's and 80's was the Golden years for USSR and its a tragedy its gone, Although Russia today isnt as good as USSR , its still better than most places and for that, i like that nation. 2nd song is from USSR era, not ancient. “Tovarish”=comrade. This is NOT a folk song! They just sing it in a folk song manner. It rubbed me a wrong way as Russian.
