They made genos attractive, extremely powerful, super serious, with a tragic backstory and just all around main character energy. Then flip it all on it's head by having him play sidekick to someone as goofy as Saitama. It's so perfect.

The whole point of OPM (other than being awesome) is that its a parody of the shonen manga/anime genre in general. Genos FEELS like a main character because in any other shonen he would be the protagonist of the whole thing, but hes totally eclipsed by Saitama who doesnt engage in the whole powering up 50 episode fights that other characters do (like goku) because hes already more powerful than anything else and just doesnt really need to try.
there are theories by fan that all of these are just a dream he got sleep for so many years because he fought the crab monster at the beggining and the crab monster actually hit saitama's head and put saitama to sleep and all of these are just his dream while on the hospital ( only theory)
