If you’re new to my channel, my name is Philip Davidson. I’m a music producer and engineer with over a decade of experience in the industry. Tracks I’ve worked on have accumulated over 100 million streams. My productions and engineering contributions have helped artists secure major record deals and advance their careers. Given this is a CZcams channel, and anyone can claim anything, I’ll give you some specifics below so you can verify for yourself if you like.
Artists and producers I've worked with include:
Ed Sheeran, Little Simz, Rihanna, Dave, Pa Salieu, Skrillex, Demi Lovato, MIA, Andrew Watt, DJ Mustard, Ilya, Digital Farm Animals, Two Door Cinema Club, Faithless, Eli Brown, Hannah Boleyn, Yxng Bane, Becky Hill, Tom Zanetti, Muni Long, Rex Kudo, Sophie, Ali Tamposi, Poo Bear, Nadia Rose, Kojo Funds, Burna Boy, Daniel Bedingfield, Lianne La Havas, Jasmine Thompson, Jorja Smith, Anne-Marie, Mahalia, artists who have been picked up by major labels, more who have been dropped by majors, and too many independent artists to name.
    How I got here…
Early years: Started learning music by playing the recorder with my dad and brother. Learned trumpet, guitar, and bass. Played in orchestras, brass bands, and rock bands.
16 years old: Taught myself Ableton Live, Pro Tools, and Cubase.
17 years old: Met my first mentor, Martin Rushent (BRIT Award Winner, Human League, The Stranglers, Buzzcocks).
18 years old: Earned Grade 8 in Classical Trumpet.
21 years old: Graduated from LIPA (Performing arts university set up by Paul McCartney).
22 years old: Mentored by James Rushent (Does It Offend You Yeah, The Prodigy, Dillon Francis).
23 years old: Became Production Manager at London music venue The Bedford, engineered 500+ artists (including Ed Sheeran, Jorja Smith, Jasmine Thompson). Started DJing London clubs.
24 years old: Stage-managed/tour-managed/FOH for shows and festivals with up to 15,000 people.
25 years old: Began a 4-year relationship with Warner Music Group, working at The Firepit, a creative content hub and recording studio, to develop new and potential signings (Anne-Marie, Mahalia). Mentored by Richard Woodcraft (Grammy Winner, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys).
26 years old: Became a freelance recording engineer.
27 years old: Produced for Sam Tompkins, leading to his signing with Island Records (UMG).
28 years old: COVID hit, explored ideas of becoming a DJ/Producer. Continued writing/producing/engineering for major label and independent artists.
30 years old: Got married to the love of my life. Shifted my focus to working with independent artists.
31 years old: Became a father.
    32 years old: Started CZcams.
Today: I create content to educate artists on their career development based on my experiences over the last decade in the music industry. I’ve opened a free community to help independent artists work through challenges and enable growth. I continue to produce for artists as my primary focus, and I will continue to grow my career, including more major label work, songwriting, and achieving high-streaming records. As I find more success, I will continue to be fully transparent with my progress and process.
To everyone who's doing anything in music: Music is lifelong, and we're all at different points in our own journey. You will continually face problems, but it's the solutions you choose that will determine the places you see along the road.
Whether you find a career or a voice, consider it a success.
Keep creating. May your passion always outweigh your obstacles.
    Never quit,
    Phil
    FULL DISCLOSURE
I make content to build my career-but I’m playing a different game than most. While many producers are hired to help with a single track, my goal is to help artists build careers. I build trust with artists by sharing everything I know for free, and I make money when they choose to work with me 1-on-1 on their music.

I love this video it reminded me of watching that whole interview, it’s literally just post content and find what works for you.
I’m commonly seeing SO many artists complain about making content, but if you love your music, your content is just an EXTENSION of your music, it’s just a way to get people to SEE your music, treat your content like art!
TikTok is NOT the only platform there’s SO many platforms out there.
Threads has been an amazing one for me and I’m finally building a following there.
You also don’t have to make super cringey content, GET CREATIVE my friends!
Content is the BEST opportunity we’ve ever had to get our music out GLOBALLY from our comfy chair at HOME!
WE are INCREDIBLY lucky to live in the time we do as indie artists, stop complaining about content and start being grateful we have this opportunity.
    Don’t expect success overnight.
Spend a lot of time experimenting to find what works for you, and then once you do find that thing GO ALL IN!
It’s not easy and there’s TONS of others out there that want it real bad.
Stay true to yourself and make your dreams come true!
    You got this.

Yeah man it's pretty crazy right now. But at the same time, this isn't the only way of doing it. If an artist approached me and said they didn't want to do a social media lead campaign, we could think of something completely different. Maybe do something like organise a Mad Decent Block Party type thing like Diplo and Major Lazer used to do back in the day, create the event, then let others do the promotion. I think it's just really important to listen and let the artist and their music lead the conversation, something a lot of people just don't take the time to do.

For me as music producer who doing everything by myself, just EVERYTHING, its just imposible to release even a single every week or two and three weeks. So yeah 😅 For an independent artist who does everything himself, it's simply impossible to properly complete so many tracks and then release them regularly, it's a huge amount of work, I've tried. And waiting 4 weeks makes no sense. Because the chances that you, as a beginner, will get into a playlist in Spotify are simply super small. It is definitely not worth it. All this matters if you already have an audience and you are warming them up before releasing something new. But if you are a new person in the industry and few people know you, all these strategies do not work. First, you just need to release music often and shoot interesting content so that you have a library and the viewers of your videos have something to listen to. And here the main thing is just to continue on, no matter what.

    • @producedbyphil

9:11 Great video and a different approach. Artists like Nic D, Connor, and Russ release songs consistently, creating high-quality music in high volume. Their strategy revolves around 12 months of consistent output. Due to various constraints, many indie artists struggle to create a catalog of songs in a year. The key here seems to be consistency in creating songs and producing content.

    • @producedbyphil
      @producedbyphil  Před měsícem +2

  • @ellispiper6313
    @ellispiper6313 Před 5 dny

Tip: don't be an independant artist. This is a tip for myself too, cause altought I make all my stuff, you HAVE to collaborate and get into scenes, then you can perform live. Any shortcomings, say you don't like posting TikToks to bring in attention, well your bandmate just so happens to.
I agree, these strategy are so short term in terms of RELEASING music that burnout/displeasure is inevitable, but I think every artist/group should stay active on TikTok and social media. Could be posting funny vid, a practice sesh snip it, behind the scenes stuff. Far more manageable way to keep a presence. Then incorporate these strats when releasing a single/album, and even better, your fans will be more excited because they're not expecting a weekly release.
And great video. Loved how you broke it down at the end. Especially valuable advice was to Release music 3-4 weeks BEFORE you starting marketing it.

There was a band called The Doors, and they were the house band at the Whisky A Go Go for six months in 1966. They went viral without MTV or social media when they released their first album in 1967. Van Halen did the same thing. They were a cover band, and a lot of people wanted to see them play ZZ Top and Deep Purple songs, but it was their first album that made them go viral. Olivia Rodrigo wrote an album called Sour, and it went viral because every song was a banger. Trying to release a song every week is absolute insanity. Especially if you play in an actual band and play instruments. There’s absolutely no way you’re going to be able to learn a song in one week. It seems like playing real instruments is basically playing the game on hard mode these days. Everyone just uses beats but I personally greatly prefer real instruments over beats 90% of the time

As someone doing it as a passion of love, I'm looking for a different approach that I want to create myself as I go that involves recording and mixing myself, releasing music directly into the public domain, only using streaming services if it's necessary to direct people to my website where you can download flacs that you actually own unlike greedy artists who use drm abuse to give the paying customer an inferior experience, won't be lost if I disappear from a streaming service and people can donate if they want to, and people are free to create their own renditions of it on their own instruments since no one can play my piano sonatas as intended on a modern piano anyway.
I want my attention to come from people who genuinely love the kind of music I create, not people pulled in by emotionally manipulative tictok videos which I won't create.

Nic D sounds like he doesn’t even care about his music. I hate the whole Quantity over Quality stuff. You don’t get longevity for one, and I don’t even think Nic D has one song that I’ve ever heard. It’s what makes Spotify take more money from us and it’s why streaming pays low per stream. They kno people are phucking the system. Tik tok fans aren’t long term, and if they are it’s only gonna be half of them. It’s gonna be gone within the next week and that’s why Nic has to make so many songs. So it’s great you want to fart out crap songs with no tours and a flat boring fan base….but if you’re in it for the actual music then I wouldn’t
Besides if all artists decide to do this, which a lot are now…then the audience is just gonna get bored of it and notice the business side of it. And then it won’t work anymore.

@@SecretSocietyofGoths A great point. But it's very specific to an individual artist and their career goals and ideas of success. I was talking to a group a few months back who was selling out a 2,500 venue in their home town but was struggling to break out to a larger geographic audience. And likewise I speak to artists that do not live in locations with vibrant nightlifes, so the options for venues that will support their genre of music is very limited. In many circumstances and situations the option of using the internet and social media to perform and spread your music becomes the best option.

I have no interest in a workflow that won't allow me to create a full, cohesive album before releasing anything. Besides, as a listener, I hate when too many songs are released before an album drop. Ruins any excitement I feel when the full body of work is actually released.

What’s your thoughts on DJ/music producer artist releasing independently? Like I can produce the track and do the mix & master but will still need a singer on it. Most singers on websites like Soundbetter want at least 150-200$ and 50% royalty cut. Do you have any tips to reduce that cost or know another way to make it more profitable? Is it crustal to have 100% of the royalties from the streams in order to make this work?

    • @producedbyphil
      @producedbyphil  Před 22 dny +1

DJ producers can deffo do this, the majority of content for this idea is based around the performance of the song (singing), but you could flip this to DJing. James Hype is awesome at content, check him if you don't know him. In terms of vocals, theres a few options.
      1. Collab with artists, go 50/50 on everything, master and pub.
      2. Use splice loops for vocals or royalty free assets
      3. AI vocals, sing a song yourself, and use something like audimee ai to resing (I do this for BGVs and fx vocals all the time, super dope)
      4. Release instrumental, then only vocal the tracks the resonate with the public

Great video man, but these guys are truly unicorns. A major issue emerging is the adoption of similar strategies by AI content creators. With predictions that around 90% of online content will be AI-generated by 2026, real content currently has an advantage-if it can be found. However, as data analysts and SEO experts craft AI content to exploit algorithms, standing out in a sea of synthetic material will become increasingly difficult when we can only produce a finite amount of quality content. AI will profoundly change the way we create and consume content-both directly through its use and indirectly through its dominance.
