    Nice to see your Sony action cams. They're excellent. Odd that more people don't use them over the GoPros. Good GoPro marketing, I guess.
    Wonderful trip, scenery, and flying!

    Look to me that the S-6 did quite well in that environment. Who needs a taildragger!

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks Jim! it really is setup well for the back country. Plenty big enough tires, great power, easy to fly and can handle a lot of crosswind. A tailwheel would be better suited for all the off airport I get into nowadays (which is the plan next, have the endorsement...plan to sell this at some point and buy one hopefully in the next 6-12 months or less), but for back country strips I definitely think this thing is hard to beat! Appreciate the comment, take care!

    What a really great film! Great characters, great geography, great everything, love to try and find those strips on Google Earth. Speaking personally, I'm especially interested in your journey nose to tail wheel, and exactly where you can go and what you can do, and the limitations of of a nose wheel. What a TG can do that a Zenith [e.g.] can't, type thing. Never seen this covered properly on YT. All the best! PS reckon that nice YT algorithm is going to catch on to you and your swathe of good content pretty damn soon.

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you very much!! Appreciate this. Good topic. The nosewheel is definitely the limiter, but with a larger tire on the nose like mine (desser 8.50) it's still very capable. I don't think most people realize what you can do with a nosewheel. You have to be real careful, one good rock could be the end, but forward vis is better to see the rocks, and the airplane is a little easier to fly so you can focus more on what you want to dodge. I think it's worth having a TW for off airport ops, but it can be done with a properly setup nosedragger. The ch750 is definitely capable, I flew one for a while years back... fun airplane, little too slow on the top end of the envelope, but pretty fun to hang on the slats. The tail on my 6 isn't as high as the 750, but it is pretty high which I really like! The high tails are a real plus if you have something you can get at a pretty high AoA.

    OMFG! At first, I was thinking "36 minutes?! Nah. I'll just check it out real quick and move on." Nope, watched the whole damn thing, and wanting more. I LOVE this kind of flying and am totally envious that you're able to do it. Beautiful video, and a great job of editing.
    I live in Albuquerque, so am familiar with mountain flying in general but not back country (my aero club doesn't allow us to land on unimproved runways) - is most of the flying you're doing in the early morning, or is this trip taking place in the cooler months of the year? And what kind of camera do you have mounted in the plane? We just drove up through Idaho to Glacier NP - SO wish we could have fly-camped our way there!

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  Před 6 lety +2

      Hey thanks Brian!!! appreciate that! I rented for a few years and couldn't fly off paved runways so I know where you are coming from. The best flying was in the morning, it was really nice out, little wind etc. We did end up flying quite a bit in the afternoons, and some days were fairly windy then, and some thermal activity etc. There was 1 day where even in the afternoon the flying wasn't bad! Where I live it's always windy so I'm pretty used to it, and as you know it can sure be amplified in the mountains. Evenings were generally pretty nice out up there as well. I'm using the newest Sony action cam up front (X3000) but not using the 4k capability since my other cams are 1080 (older sony action cam as100v and a yi lite). Take care!

    Serious question here. Does everyone have as much faith in their Rotax 912's/914's as say you would a Lycoming or Continental? I assume so with the topography you guys are flying over. Been going back and forth between Rotax 912 and a Lycoming 233/235, or even a UL 350iS. Thanks.

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  Před 4 lety +2

      I believe so. I have around a thousand hours behind Rotaxs.. though I've had some issues, so far, they have always gotten me home. Most of the issues stem from hopping them up and making more power. They can even handle producing a lot more power - but it has to be done right (2007 or later Rotax is important if doing turbo setups, big bores etc. - currently doing a build on my S7 because of this very issue.. pre-07 the cases are weak) There is some data out there that suggests Rotax is very reliable, and that seems to be the general consensus among folks that fly behind them. 99% of the negative I hear about Rotax's come from folks that have never flown behind one. Are they perfect... no!! But they are good. One thing nice about them is they experience very little cylinder wear.. I've heard of quite a few of them going 4000hrs and still having good leak down results.. the short stroke engine doesn't side load the pistons as hard as the big direct drive motors and drastically reduces cylinder wear. Not having to worry about shock cooling, and better cooling in general are also nice perks. They are more fuel efficient than the direct drives typically as well. And PS, I'm not a hater of the old air cooled tech.. I would fly behind a Lycoming anytime! But Lycoming and Continental don't offer anything in this size range that can really compete for the weight.. especially if you have a big bore/turbocharged Rotax. Just some thoughts, thanks for the question!

    Looking into getting in this type of flying after flying for the airlines for 30 years. Does anybody use the Rans S-21 Outbound for this type of flying? If not, why?

    What are the usual DA's you guys are dealing with up there? Thanks.

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  Před 4 lety

      Most spots in Idaho range from around 2k to 7k MSL. Typically a hot day at 7k will get you up in the 10-11k range DA. I would say most of the time operating in ID in the mountains you will see anything from 6-9k DA.

    @19:02 what kind of aircraft is that? It looks like it has a miniature version of a de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver landing gear in it! Can anyone identify this bush plane?

      hey Jeff that's a 56 Helio Courier (391b). My good friend Lynn picked it up several years back and his been going through it piece by piece. It has a geared g0-435 lycoming that makes 260hp. Very interesting plane with the pop out slats and huge flaps and strutted gear etc.

      Forward facing up front is a Sony X3000 (not running in 4k, just 1080p). Camera facing me is an older Sony AS100v, and the one behind me facing forward is a Yi Lite. All running 1080p 60fps right now. Thanks
