Isiah Thomas Didn't Deserve To Make The Dream Team

  • When talking about the 1992 Dream Team, Isiah Thomas is usually regarded as the roster's biggest snub. However I don't think he deserved to make the Dream Team at all. In this video, I'll be comparing him to everyone else who made the squad and showing why Isiah Thomas doesn't quite stack up against the competition.

It wasn’t just MJ and Pippen who didn’t want Zeke on the team. Magic and Larry didn’t want him, either. Magic’s reasoning is the most sensical, in my view. Plus, they deserved to have a crack at a gold medal since then missed out on 1980.

Isaiah was the one who missed out in 1980. He was ON that all-collegiate team that was robbed of their chance due to the USA boycott. Pros were not allowed back then. Fast forward to 1992. When you look at the names on that team, there was clearly one missing. Thomas deserved a chance just as much as Bird, Magic, MJ, etc. Isaiah belonged on that court with those names. From that point of view, Thomas got screwed TWICE! The man has a right to be bitter.

Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics, Magic Johnson said in “When the Game Was Ours,” a book he wrote with Jackie MacMullan and Larry Bird. “Nobody on the team wanted to play with him.” It meant plenty that the statement came from Johnson, an openly close friend of Thomas during that era in the 1980s. This argument is bigger than MJ, I noticed on other CZcamsr platforms in the comment section that people blaming MJ. You can't blame one person here, because of a comment he made. Scottie acknowledged on an ESPN interview that he didn't want to play with Isiah either. There were other comments made by other players just as well. The book also mentioned that Isiah was spreading rumors about Magic Johnson's sexuality and amongst other things. They already had other great point guards, so they didn't need him anyway. Also, there were other great NBA players who weren't selected for the dream team. Read the book! In addition, nobody was replacing MJ on that dream team because that's not even a discussion.

BTW, Laettner was the clear choice for the 12th roster spot. Laettner had put together a resume that almost no one in men's NCAA history could match: four seasons, four Final Fours, three straight title games, back-to-back championships, Player of the Year 1992, second-team All-American in 1991, first team in 1992...that selection wasn't based on "Who's going to be the better NBA player?", but "Who's the best college player?" Dude, with respect, well made video but there's no game in the world in which anyone that was actually around in this era and watched the NBA would take Stockton over Zeke. Just not happening. There's no debate here at all. Zero chance, even if you hate the "Bad Boys". The two titles to Stockton's zero are just part of it. Don't get me wrong, Stockton's a top 50 player, but in terms of skill, they simply don't compare. Stockton can't take over a game, for starters. Zeke was extremely divisive and that's why he was left out. MJ himself said that he considers Zeke the second greatest PG in history after Magic. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but again, there's simply no comparison at all. Stockton and Zeke are not in the same conversation.

Since you know that the roster was mainly set in the 1991 off season, why use stats for Pippen, Mullin, Stockton, or Thomas for the 91-92 season? That seems like an odd way to "do your research".
The reasons Thomas *was* a snub: in the 5 seasons leading up to the Dream Team selection, he had been to the Conference Finals every year, winning 3, and wining 2 championships. Leaving out Magic and Larry who both had more WCF/ECF trips in the previous decade, and Michael (& Scottie) who lost to the Pistons twice in the ECF before his two three-peats, nobody else comes close. Clyde did make it to the WCF in 90, 91, and 92, advancing to the finals in 90 to lose to Isiah, losing in 91 to Magic, and advancing to the finals in 92 to lose to Michael.
The real question is John Stockton. Before being selected, he had been the starting point guard for the Jazz for 4 years, after 3 years primarily off the bench. He was an all-star starting in the 88-89 season, with 3 all-star selections before being named to the Dream Team. Thomas had been the starting point guard and an all-star for all 10 of his seasons before the Dream Team was named. There was very little doubt who were the best and second-best point guards of the 5 and 10 years leading up to the 1991 off season. One was on the Dream Team, the other was snubbed.
Finally, Thomas was so hated around the league that he was the Players Association president from 1988-94. All the players thought he was so horrible that they elected him over and over. As the Bulls proved with Rodman, Salley, and Edwards, people hated the "Bad Boy Pistons"... until they were providing intensity and physical play for *your* team.
    *****
For all the people fixated on the Pistons leaving the bench early, please watch the Celtics in the 1988 Eastern Conference Finals. The starters leave, walking across the court, while the Pistons Adrian Dantley is about to shoot a free throw. McHale gave some fist bumps, but Bird simply walked off. And that was fine, because that is his intensity. Michael has the same intensity (as does Kobe). We celebrate them for it, nobody needed Bird to be a gracious loser. The reaction to the Pistons, and Isiah in particular, was because of the "Bad Boy" image. Not because leaving was actually a bad thing.

Zeke definitely from a skills standpoint, deserved to be on the dream team. But some of the guys did have issues with his lack of sportsmanship. It was always considered a big deal to shake hands with your opponent after every game win or lose. It was just the year before when Zeke infamously walked past the bulls without acknowledging them after the playoff lose. In fact the NBA had some concern about him playing on the team. Remember this was an international event. What if by some miracle the USA lost. Would Isaiah shake there hands. Who knows, but it was a point of contention.

It's kinda like this.. Dr.J and Kareem passed the torch to Magic and Bird; the league was basically transitioning to Jordan. When you consider
( IF -and this is a pretty big IF )
that if those 3 didn't like him, or agreed that it was better for the team, then we are considering them not only being ambassadors of the league but it stands to reason that the carry-over extended to this, too and allowed a bit of wiggle room with the overall roster. Thank you! Isiah Thomas was a bad shooter who consistently did more damage to his own team's offense with his scoring than to the other team. There's a great stat on Basketball Reference called TS Add (True Shooting Points Added). It computes how many points each player scored above or below what a league average player would have scored given an equal number of true shot attempts. So essentially it shows which players combined volume and efficiency (or those that combined volume with inefficiency, for that matter). With his inefficient volume shooting, Isiah Thomas contributed -771 points to the Pistons throughout his career. This means a league average player would have scored 771 MORE points than Isiah with the same number of true shot attempts. Meanwhile, for comparison, John Stockton finished his career with +2,465 TS Add and the career assists and steals records. I'm aware that politics played into Isiah not making the team, but based on individual production, Isiah didn't deserve to.

You have quite a few problems in this video.
Isiah didn't freeze out MJ in the 85' All-Star game. That has been debunked by the East All-Star teammates, not one saying Isiah wanted to freeze MJ out of the game. So that's BS, but that's the narrative MJ has put out in the public.
I like that you put in that Drexler dunk on Isiah in the 1990 NBA Finals. Who won that series? Detroit did in 5 games. Who was the NBA Finals MVP of that Series? Isiah Thomas was. Who Scored more points per game and had more assists per game in that series? Isiah Thomas did.
Where are the Isiah highlights from that series? I know he has a few of them...
As far as the Dream Team is concerned, we all know it was a political move by Michael Jordan to keep Isiah off the team. In Jack McCallum's book "Dream Team" it specifically references Jordan's meeting with Rod Thorn, a committee selection member. The quote from Jordan, "Rod, I don't want to play if Isiah Thomas is on the team." MJ was salty that Isiah and the Bad Boys kicked his Ass three years in a row in the playoffs. Nobody cried in Detroit when Bird and other Boston starters walked off the floor before game 6 of the ECF's in 1988 when time was left on the clock and the Celtics were toast. But when it happened to MJ, Isiah had to feel his wrath.
As far as John Stockton is concerned are you really concerned about his and Isiah's production comparison from the 1991 and 1992 seasons? I know I'm not because Isiah Thomas up until the Dream Team selection announcement came out on September 21st, 1991, before the 1991-92 season was ever played, Isiah Thomas was the more accomplished player in terms of individual play and team success by far.
After the 1991 season, Isiah Thomas was a 9x All-Star and a 2x All-Star game MVP. Stockton was a 3x All-Star with no MVP's. Isiah was a 5x All-NBA selection, either the 1st or 2nd team. Stockton was a 4x All-NBA selection, with zero 1st team selections. He was on the 2nd or 3rd team. Isiah Thomas was an All-NBA 1st Team rookie selection in 1982, while Stockton didn't make the rookie selection in 1985.
Isiah led the NBA in assists in 1985, while Stockton was the assists leader from 1988 thru 91'. Stockton did make All-NBA Defensive 2nd team in 89' and 91', while Isiah didn't make any during his career. Stockton also was the NBA steals leader in 89'. But Isiah's game wasn't about being a defensive stopper. Isiah focused more on team accomplishments going forward in 1987, not individual accolades.
While Stockton was busy racking up assists from 88' thru 91' and focused on being a very good individual defender during that time, what were the Jazz doing in the playoffs? Losing. The Jazz were 2-4 in playoff series from 88' thru 91'. Not very successful, right?
Now what was Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons doing in the playoffs from 1988 thru 91'? Isiah was winning. 1988 Detroit Pistons Eastern Conference Champs, lost to LA in the Finals in 7 games. In 1989 and 1990 the Detroit Pistons were your NBA Back-to-Back World Champions. In 1991 they finally lost to MJ and the Bulls in the EC Finals. That is a 13-2 playoff series record, which I think was the best in that time period. And who was the leader in those efforts to beat MJ, Bird, Ewing, Barkley, Magic, and Drexler in the playoffs? That would be Isiah Thomas.
And as far as you calling the Detroit Pistons a dirty team, well I'll just say from watching all those games played during that time period, 99% of the time the Pistons played a clean game without incident. The hard fouls, the fights, the physical play gets magnified because of who the opponent was. The majority of the clips out there being against MJ and the Bulls and Bird and the Celtics, which whom Detroit had to defeat in order to get to the mountain top.
John Stockton played in only two Olympic "Dream Team" games, and only scored 10 points total. The "Dream Team" won by 79 points, 44 points, 60 points, 41 points, 38 points, and 47 points in their six games played. John Stockton had no hand in the overall success of the team. I would have much rather seen Isiah Thomas, who should have been selected on that team based on merit and his legacy, than Stockton, who was chosen because MJ, Bird, and Magic's feelings were hurt. Immature and pathetic if you ask me.

Not exactly. Jordan was eliminated by Isiah and his team for three consecutive seasons. Jordan had to wait for the pistons to decline. The fact that Isiah defeated him 3 times makes a black mark in Jordan's career. Jordan is uncomfortable and sullen even today solely because of his defeats at the hands of Isiah.
Stockton and Drexler were not winners. Isiah was a winner. Pippen was a side show. No matter what, the dream team without IT is a fake one.

Not to mention Thomas was 30, Dumars, 28, Rodman 30. They still had a great team with a core still in their primes. They just ran into a Bulls team that were better at that point. It doesn’t take away how great those Pistons teams were. And how dominant the Bulls were becoming. You should definitely watch more basketball instead of just making up shit lol

Isiah got hurt and was unpopular but individually was more talented than Stockton. The real proof is to ask their peers when Thomas and Stocton were AT THEIR BEST. Not who played longer or who played with whom, ( Karl Malone) or whose team won more games. There were other players like Thomas who showed great potential too but who similarly got hurt and had to retire., Thomas belonged on that team, but he was kept off really only because he was perceived as being an unpleasant guy and even though it was less than a genuine reason, it was still made to keep him off the team. Thomas was a GREAT player before the injuries with or without talented teammates from the first time he stepped on a court.

I'm gonna go there, and say that racism played a part in the "Dream Team" selection. Christian Laettner over Shaq? Chris Mullin over Isaiah Thomas? (the real reason was Jordan hated Isaiah, but still). Larry Bird was also barely able to play with his back... Look, I cherish memories of the dream team. I went to UCSD when they practiced there, of all our places- our little Division III school. But in retrospect, there were definitely some slights- and another great video from your channel.

@ Jesse Stirling in Birds case yes he had a bad back but this was not an NBA all star team this was an Olympic team and Bird was picked because of his great career, his leadership and because Magic lobbi hard to have Bird on the team

    • @UnconventionalReasoning
      @UnconventionalReasoning Před rokem

I will disagree about both Bird and Laettner. There was little doubt that the team would win. PR was more important, and that started and ended with Michael, Magic, and Bird. Getting Michael was difficult. Getting Magic was easy. Getting Bird was a big step towards getting Michael. This also begins and ends the Thomas snub issue.
Laettner was chosen over Shaq because they were confident Laettner would know his place was on the bench. They expected Shaq to want to sit at the big boys' table. He had not yet earned that.
Mullin, though... I think Worthy made more sense...

Can't disagree too much. Isiah had him in every statistical category except assists and perhaps longevity, if that counts as a stat that is. Even when you look at winning, Isiah won multiple titles, Stockton had none. You could argue Stockton's game would be better for the Dream Team because they had plenty of offense, they just needed a distributor and Stockton is a pass first guy, but in terms of all around productivity, Isiah was definitely better.

Isiah put a 40 🍔 on Stockton everytime he played against him. That's why Karl Malone put that elbow on Isiah. He didn't want Stockton embarrassed. That happened in the 1991-92 season btw
