    Note on Zande weapons: Because the Zande were really just a mix of a bunch of ethnic groups that the Ambomu tribe conquered, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what weapons they created and used themselves and what weapons were “borrowed” by them or used by their multi-ethnic subjects. The makrigga and manbeli are especially fuzzy in this regard.

    They are overrated because British lost a lot of battles to them, so they made the Zulu seem so powerful to explain their loss

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 Před 4 lety +56

      True, they mostly succeeded due to the simple fact that they were a united army that had a strong trading relationship with Europeans so they had access to European goods and weapons there opponents didnt. They also mostly fought smaller, disconnected tribes with their larger united army. When they fought the British they had a massive numerical superiority in addition to the home field advantage and the British lost a few battles to them mainly due to incompetence of their leaders in the field. The Zulus were great fighters for the region but overall they dont compare to contemporary armies in other parts of Africa like the Mali empire, the Dahomey, or Ethiopian empire.
      Another thing not alot of people realize is that in that part of Africa warfare was fairly low intensity, similar in many ways to very early Greek city states: one tribe would raid another, maybe a couple people would get injured or die, then the loser would give the winner either goods, cattle, or land. The Zulu stood out because they learned to coordinate better and had a more "take no prisoners" attitude and fought to kill, something they learned from hunting elephants and from dealing with European traders. It's a bit like the Zulu's opponents were expecting a boxing match but the Zulus showed up with a knife or a gun, they played to win.

      Dear History House Productions,
      The Pilum was of higher metallurgical quality, was produced at a very high number and rate, as well as being more versatile than other European spears. The Pilum could be thrown and because of the design of it's point, it would pierce shields, thus becoming stuck and encumbering the shield bearer. Leaf headed spears often have a harder time penetrating armour and shields due to their wider and larger heads. It also was useful as a hand weapon, as there are multiple recorded cases of the Pilum being used in conjunction with a testudo formation to create an armoured pseudo-phalanx. The Pilum was also light enough for the Legionary to carry two at once, increasing a soldiers versatility and chance of having a main weapon during a battle. It also had a greater overall length than the Ikiwa, and since each Legionary had at least two, you didn't need to wrestle with a dead body to get your main weapon back.
      Also, the Pilum looks way cooler, you uncultured swine.

    Zulu South African here. It's actually spelt "ixwa", the X is pronounced in a hard, squelching sound, hence why it was said to resemble the sound of it makes when stabbing someone. Just putting it out there. Otherwise, great vid.

    A hobby of mine is trying to figure out how different armies would compare to eachother similar to the show Deadliest Warrior (which i loved) and i've always wondered how a sub-saharan african army would stack up against a similar European or Asian equivalent. I'd love to see a medieval army of knights and man at arms or an army of Samurai and Ashigaru go up against the Dahomey or Zulu.

      Few know the AK 47 was taken from an earlier design that ancient Russian mammoth traders brought from Germany on their way to Egypt.

    • @utzius8003
      @utzius8003 Před 4 lety

      @Arnez Willis There really isn't such a thing of superiority between the AR and AK type rifles, since it depends on what you want to use them for.

    • @utzius8003
      @utzius8003 Před 4 lety

      @Arnez Willis Well, if you wanted to harm unarmored civilians the AK 47 would be a better option than the AR 15, as the 5.56 Nato round has a smaller wound channel than the bigger 7.62 round of the 47. But most gun crime is committed with handguns, as they are easily cobcealable, just as effective as a rifle against unarmored civilians and can also hold around 20-25 rounds with an extended magazine. The AR 15 thing is mostly just a stereotype.
