Great thing about youtube is you can see clips of him singing this wise and wonderful song throughout his career, always bringing the same conviction and emotional grit. True artistry.
Tony Bennett Is a "REAL"-----SINGER. But beyond being a SINGER...he is an artist... His talent goes WAY beyond his incredible voice... His ability to communicate....the nuances of deep and profound emotions...to touch the feelings deep in the heart. Finding this performance---is a very special gift.....I feel very fortunate to have found this.... It just does not get any better.....
I`ve heard every every version , and he does it differently every time. Such a wonderful crooner. I think his best interpretation is that one from 1987 ... when he seems to be a little lost on the lyrics... BUT, he makes the final blow with amazing long notes in the final chords... he improvises the end as a huge coronation for being a little lost on the lyrics just seconds ago. That makes a REAL ARTIST no matter the error. Humans after all, but if you can correct it with greatness like him, you are more than welcome. One of the best crooners and story tellers EVER.
Omg that ending is so technically masterful yet deeply emotional, it crushes my soul every time I hear it from him. This is the apotheosis of Bennett, the last of the giants. May the Lord give him neverending music and jazz sessions up Above.
Just to think that Tony Bennett has been singing this beautiful composition for years and then still sing it with such passion and love for the music on his 90th birthday in August 2016.
This is truly a great song, sung by Tony Bennett on stage is the best interpretation I have heard and he still reaches that A4 in his mid eighties incredible!
I have loved Tony Bennett 's singing since I was 18years old. Now I will be 85 this November 2022. The song that got me hooked on to Tony was "Because of You" . There can only be one Tony Bennett. Sir James Ah Koy, KBE, CF, OBE, OF
I love this song and Tony’s rendition of it! Priceless. One of my favorite lines - at 2:58 - “If we can be the best of lovers, yet, be the best of friends…” So touching and so true for a healthy relationship.
What a voice and what a VOID this gentleman has left. Watching his face and powerful gesticulations as well as the wonder of his voice, so recently gone, gives me a sense of my own finitude and I'm wondering what I have left. What Tony Bennett did was to help dilute life's misery. Would that each of us, maybe a little bit, would have such an impact on others as he unquestionably did. I sound like a preacher, sorry.
Respectfully, I disagree. No mistake was incurred here. There was too much post-ending after what SEEMED to be an error or an abrupt culmination. . The way he moved 3-times - slowly, to the orchestra, his hand-pointing, his absence of perturbation, his new phrasing not heard before in the song, his expert pauses, and the glorious culmination were no "mistake cover-ups" but all planned. No one like this treasure of a human being. There have been times in my long life when I was hurting and devoid of cheer when I'd hear him sing, "When will the bells ring for me," and the gloom lifted. I owe him soooo much.
Tony Tony but I can sing it like this what a great great song he sang many put everything into it it was beautiful I get Tony Bennett keep the music playing brother
The first time I heard Bennett sing this on his "Art of Excellence" album, I thought he kind of destroyed the song, because it was so overwrought and over the top. Frankly, it's still completely overwrought and over the top, but I now can't help but appreciate what a spectacular vocal performance this is. Amazing pipes!
OPINION: TONY BENNETT IS GOOD IN : 1) I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO 2) HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING ? ( MR & MRS BERGMAN W/ LEGRAND) 3) WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE REST OF YOU LIFE ? ( MR & MRS BERGMAN ). 4) THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE . 5) ON BEGIL (?) STREET
James Ingram and Patti Austin did the original and had the big hit, it would have been decent of him to give them a mention not Sinatra as if it was his.
People talk about Sinatra but Tony Bennett had a far superior voice.
He had the best interpretation and Phrasing of any song he sang. A great artist!
Different style.... Experts said Frank was the crooner or the century....
Both are oustanding
Have you heard of Tito Nieves?... singing this same song
This song is a classic. What a great performance.
As great as Frank is, I prefer Tony. My number one. The best of all.
There will never be another Tony Bennett. He is in a class by himself!
Wonderful THEN and WONDERFUL NOW !!!

This is truly a great song, sung by Tony Bennett on stage is the best interpretation I have heard and he still reaches that A4 in his mid eighties incredible!
A4? Thanks, I thought the reason I couldn't reach it was because it was off the scale.

Too bad the 6 thumbs down people do not know anything about listening with their soul, and not just with their ears. They are missing out on life.

I really love Tony Bennett too, but your comment is wrong.
Tony Bennett is always impressive. but the original version of the song by James Ingram and Patti Austin has to be the best.
to bad Sinatra never recorded this.....he missed so many...o well.....he did record plenty...
Michel Legrand & the Bermans wrote beautiful songs together.
Tony Bennett is the world's best crooner- period, end of comment!
Jesus friggin' Christ, I'm inside of a public place and want to cry my eyes out.
Hoy ar te best
YOU AR TE BEST TONY.
Not one of his best.
Great, but his ending of this song is little too pompous for my taste, I like Sinatras version more. ; )
Pompous? Can't see thar at all
I just loved this man and his beautiful soul and music.
