  • Waldorf Wave synth demo featuring various wavetable sounds, patches and presets. The Waldorf Wave is a huge and rare vintage wavetable synthesizer from 1993, and can create some incredible pads, soundscapes and crunchy sounds. This Waldorf Wave demo was filmed at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles, September 2022.
    The Waldorf Wave features digital wavetables, analog LPF and HPF filters, 16-48 voices of polyphony (depending on model), 61-76 keys (depending on model) with velocity and aftertouch, MIDI, and tons of buttons and knobs to tweak sounds to your liking. There were also different colored units produced.
    The Waldorf Wave is a monster wavetable synthesizer in size and sound. As it is very rare and few were produced, it commands high prices on the second market. As an alternative, the Waldorf Microwave from 1989 is far more affordable.
    I was lucky to have the chance to try this vintage Waldorf Wave during my visit to the Vintage Synth Museum and hope you enjoy the demo.

    I once saw a feature film late one night on BBC TV in the mid 90's. About the trials and tribulations of a mixed race London based band. But what stood out the most was the keyboard player in the band was using a Waldorf Wave. I've been a Waldorf fan for a long time and still own a Microwave 2, but at that time I'd only ever seen photos of a Wave in action, not video. Haven't seen the film since and I've tried to track it down online, but it's tricky to find when I can't even recall any of the actors that appeared in it.

      Thanks for sharing -- I too have never seen a WAVE in the flesh, so I jumped on the opportunity to record it when I had the chance. The timeframe of mid-90s for the Wave to be in a film sounds about right!

    I know a fellow from France named Eric, who is the only person I know who has one of these.....he's always raving about it................really a rare and incredible beast.............what a cool upload..........(I just hope that those rotary encoders last longer than the ones I had on my MicrowaveXT and Blofeld)

    When Waldorf make a synth, they make it well, my Blofeld was my 1st I think, and 5 years later still have it, I hate the lack of knobs but the sound is special.
    Keybed is my best I have out of all my synths I have owned.
    Who could resist a synth named after a Bond villain?

    This is like the machine all synthwave sounds of the 2010's came from.

    At a PPG Wave event in ?2004, hosted by Paul Maddox, in a hotel near NEC, Birmingham, UK, they had a Wave. So I actually saw one. It wasn't powered up, so too may have been not working. This demo makes it sound not unlike my UDO Super6, in that the Wave has wide stereo, like the UDO. I love all the LFO pitch used in these patches, though this is not useful to me for the music I play.

    • @synth4ever

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield Před rokem

      Indeed, some of the patches here sound exactly like Super 6 and that is probably due to the very digital-sounding user waves playing over classic analogue shapes, through gritty analogue signal path. I love Super 6, it is my 2nd favourite synth after Prophet 10, for million different reasons. I got it instead of Waldorf Iridium that for me was just a big vst in a nice box. Super 6 is a marvel of modern synth enginering and I just hope George keeps on with great work. I also haveMicrowave XT and it doesn't sound like this - so oddly enough, Super 6 sounds closer to Wave and PPG for that matter than Microwave XT.

    • @bilonggrisimmeri
      @bilonggrisimmeri Před rokem +1

      @@earlsfield Wow, that is very interesting. I plan to organise Super6 single cycle User Waves into a "best of" set. There are about 3 sets of X16 such waves, so I need to wait till a few more sets are available. Then it's just a matter of going through each set, and dragging those that appeal to me into a folder. IMHO, we need to remove the reverb and delay from presets on other synths, and just add a bit of chorus. With a decent pre-amp, even the most tired unloved rompler synth will sound pretty good. My one piece of Waldorf gear is the NW-1 wavetable euro rack module, which is a bit underwhelming. Not that impressed with Waldorf, compared to PPG.

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield Před rokem

      @@bilonggrisimmeri I absolute agree re: effects. For instance, effects on OB6, REV2, are mediocre, its nice to have them but I use pedals for these. However, chorus on Super 6 is not only an homage and inspiration from Ju -6, it is also amazing sound desing tool that works extremely well in cojunction with DDS1/ super waves. Delay on S6 however is so nice because it doesn't cause feeedback and you can have very nice ambience with it, and also modulate it and delay freeze - definitely two effects I think every poly could use. Just looking at GS Music E7, they kinda did that too.

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield Před rokem

      @@bilonggrisimmeri And to build further on this, since you menitoned romplers - Unfortunatelly, romplers were done in time when "all digital" was a thing in synth design and you have stuff like JV1080 which is my oldest synth, a rompler with very decent algorytms for 4 different effects. Multitimbrality is also a great feature too, but now i am driffting from the theme.

    Nice vid. Thanks. Back in the days I bought a Wave. Upon arrival and firing up, the display said nothing but 'error'. No sound at all. :-( So I did send it back to Waldorf and I got my money back. Currently owning a 32-voice Q and 30-voice XTK which imho perfectly replace the sounds, but unfortunately not the design of this true exotic...

    How does the Quantum compare I know it’s really not the same synth but the most similer modern comparison?

    • @synth4ever
      @synth4ever  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Quantum goes far beyond in terms of sound design possibilities, much more than just wavetable. Sound character is different from demos I've heard. Each synth has its own unique character.

    What advantages does it have over Waldorf from the last decade?

    • @SinclairSound
      @SinclairSound Před rokem

      Near knob-per-function probably, you can get similar sounds from their more modern synths but nothing quite like the Wave. The quantum is probably the closest, but as the wave is super rare these days I've never compared them

    • @krinzologicstudio
      @krinzologicstudio Před rokem

      The sound! The real time controls…the sound is more organic then new waldorf, closed one are all the microwave, the Microwave1 rev a or b but lacks of controls unless you buy the stereoping programmer. I had the wave (sold after desperation no working unit), I have all the microwave synths series, they are amazing in they own, the new waldorf with quantum or iridium are really poor compared with the power bass and definition sound of these old glory machines, no transient punchiness and no presence. Unfortunately to get one working unit you should spend a fortune..Reverb prices are crazy..and then pray that is working fine..the wave was one of most unreliable machine…i remember the working units where 1 up 4…
