Building a RISKY Skinny Ramp Over an Abandoned Bridge (MTB Trails)

  • We're building a super skinny teeter totter for mountain biking over an abandoned bridge I found in my back woods. I usually have to start by removing a lot of honey suckle. Then I needed to make a dirt entrance connecting to the bridge. And of course, I'm not using any power tools. I love the meditative effect that doing everything by hand creates.

I have seen the wooden pin technique used in buildings I once worked in. One was a old woolen mill on the Blackstone River, another, a commercial building in Worcester, Massachusetts. This woodworking technique put things together that last centuries of hard work.
Your learning of these skills can provide not only a nice lifestyle but will be valuable in a village environment.

Love this hand tool expedition! I'd just like to make one slight safety suggestion if I may... When you're hewing with your hatchet, stand with your right leg back away from the stump that way if your hatchet glances of your work piece it'll be more likely to catch the stump and less likely to meet your leg. Peter Follansbee has some pretty good videos with Roy Underhill that talk about hewing safely.
