Good morning Tom, I was just sitting here having coffee with you . When I was young we used to dig holes in the ground and store things like apples and many of our vegetables only we used leaves between the layers and they stayed fresh for a very long time. It sure was a beautiful day at camp. Have a great one brother and I will see you on the next adventure.

I knew there was something called that other than the root cellar, I remember hearing my grandma talking about burying some vegetables and such un a shallow hole with straw and dirt to preserve it. Ive always heard of the root cellar tho and walked thru many plantations in south Louisiana with still working root cellars.

    Amazing Tom. Thanks so much.
I took my daughters to a Celtic Highland Festival and they both kept saying, "Dad, this looks just like Viking Tom's festival he just went to." They wanted to put there money together and buy you a sword, but $10 of allowance money unfortunately doesn't buy a full Tang sword these days. ⛺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚔️

Tom👍👍 The Viking lesson was very interesting, many hardships were overcome in history by experimentation. Vikings like other cultures had their own methods that were specific to location and climate. The oat porridge looked good and the "old school" way it was prepared is cool. Cimbrer coffee😉put the finishing touch on the meal. Thanks for the trip to Cimbrer Camp with you and Cornelius, great time. See you next time.

Hello my friend, And Welcome back! It funny you talk about how the Viking use to do this and that, I'm a little older then you are And from Indiana ( U.S.A. ) And i remember how we use to cure meat over the winter, And the storage house is what we called ( root cellar ) and the salt on the fish sucked all the blood out plus cured the meat. And to smoke meat or fish it didn't need salk the smoke cured the meat and it wouls last for 8 month or more!. Hey buddy I love all your videos!!! Thank you so much......

The Kules, Clamps in English, I have tried in the past, with varying levels of success. For root crops left in the ground, a generous amount of straw from the corn fields, then earthing up to cover the draw was a success. Being able to harvest ad-hoc throughout the winter. Another sort of clamp, boxes with sand and the root crops laid out uniformly, between layers of sand. Just to the north of here are the chalk hills, corn/grain was buried in pits hollowed out of the chalk, then a cap of chalk and clay sealed it. That however was a practice that went back to the Bronze Age.

I once accidentally dried some fish in my freezer and turned it into klipfish lol. I bought a frozen pack of cod, opened the bag to get one piece and put the rest back in the freezer. Since they weren't individually vacuum packed they dried out completely.

Well Tom, another fantastic video! There was a time when these skills were practiced and known by most people. To me, its sometimes sad to realize the old ways are becoming lost to modern society. Growing up my grandparents lived with us and they used to tell us kids stories about living when they were young. I really wish I paid more attention. Now, they are gone and that generation has passed on and taken valuable life hacks with them. Its a pity. However, people like you keep the old ways alive. Keep up the great job. I'm appreciative there are people like you who take time to make these wonderful videos. Peace be the journey.

I'm an old woman now, but when younger I did Viking Age reenactment (which is why I love your videos). I remember my favourite beer, onion and cheese soup...probably sounds disgusting to non reenactors but it was always delicious. Many of the ways our ancestors used to prepare and store food are making a comeback, for probably obvious reasons. Foolish, it is, to always rely on electricity for everything. I also remember my grandmother cooking and preserving beef and pork in crockpots of lard. It was always delicious, and kept in the cold pantry lasted at least the year out.

Interesting choice of materials to make the fire pit from. I know you like things to be as authentic as possible but I'm pretty sure the Vikings could work stone. And I expect they could also make mud brick. Making the pit out of wood makes as much sense as having a thatch roof.

There’s some similarities with the old Hawaiian food preservation especially with salt and drying, the Hawaiians would create salt from the ocean water in small salt ponds and large indentations on large basalt boulders or rocks and collect the salt crystals after evaporation, the Hawaiians salted and dried their meats and fish and dried the fruits as well.
    Hawaiian pipikaula is an example.
