I feel very proud of myself - I rode about 100m with my hands off the handlebars today, for the first time ever.
I'm 38 years old :-D Yeah, balance is not my best attribute. And my 6 year old son is teaching himself to do this already with casual ease...

Three things I do to improve my balance on a bike: 1) ride mountain bikes - learn to let the bike move around under you & don't react to every tiny slide. 2) ride slowly while maneuvering (around cones or natural obstacles), 3) learn to track stand (I'm not so good at this yet) and try to never unclip at junctions (safely, of course).

Thank you, I thought it was just me who couldn't let go with one hand for a proper look behind. Turning slightly and using peripheral vision to check on the traffic coming up behind you regularly is good practice though, and I am managing to balance better and turn further now. I'll get there.

I live in an area with some crazy steep hills. Not all of us can climb like Quintana but whatever your fitness level if a hill is steep enough at some point you will be balanced limited - struggling to produce enough power to not to fall over. The ability to ride very slowly can keep you out of the red zone and get you up some very steep hills that you otherwise would need to walk.

I amuse myself by trying to ride down the center of the white painted line marking the edge of the travel lane. Of course, assuming there is a paved shoulder to the right, the road is reasonably straight, and it's not raining. It helps to relax and look far ahead. Which naturally means that you can't see whether your tires are on the line. The line is often slightly smoother than the rest of the pavement, so perhaps you can feel when you are on it.

Standing on half balance balls (mounted on a wooden platform) with the ball side down is excellent, as is doing push ups on them is just as good. The push up method works by having your inner ear in a different orientation to allow you to train your body to adapt faster.
