Dirt and Facelift are both timeless albums.
Facelift is definitely my favorite of the two.
Don't forget about the Jar of Flies EP. Best EP ever and first to be number 1 on the billboard 100. I even have a tattoo of JoF on my arm
@@Pigeuns People often overlook Sap. Even though it was only 4 songs, it was still a really good EP.
@@Pigeuns absolutely! Such a beautiful album.
@@backintheday3097 The reason it's overlooked is because most bands have records that are more popular than others. It is more noticeable with Alice In Chains though because they never produced a single record in their entire run (Ik they are still going but it isn't the same band to me).
I'd be mad too, that album rules.
Something similar happened to me after I got in a car accident. I had a CD in my car stereo when the accident happened and I never got it back.
Sounds like youre really Sitting in the angry chair.
A highly under appreciated comment. 👍
He's down in a hole, alright.
Like the old "Recliner of Rage" segments on Conan.
Jerry Cantrell's monolithic riffs are notorious for blowing fuses!
I bought a Sega CD Model 2 in 1993 and it was $229 and came packed with Sewer Shark. I quickly bought up Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, Ecco the Dolphin and Bram Stokers Dracula. I kept the console for around a year and then sold it for an even dumber purchase the Atari Jaguar!
I remember the jag first game I played was avp so wierd the controllers
Shameful! Final Fight and Sonic CD alone justified it.
Both Jag and Sega CD had bangers. Just had to reach deep down.
I was 5 years old and I chose the Sega CD over a Power wheels for my birthday, I still regret it to this day and I am 36 years old LOL
@@williammcdonald9832 what’d you do get sewer shark or some shit? Sonic was the way to go my boy!
When I was a kid I begged my mom to get me a Model 1 SegaCD from Sam’s Club who had one that was open box (the revised model was out by then). I somehow convinced her and had a ton of fun with Sonic CD, Slipheed and Sewer Shark.
Not long afterward we went on a vacation and, upon returning, my SegaCD didn’t work! I tell my mom (who somehow is convinced I broke it?) and we tried to get it replaced, but since it was open box they didn’t guarantee it.
As you’d said, knowing what I do now I know I could probably use my multimeter to find a fault and it’s probably the fuse or something. Oh well.
lol, in the time ive had my PS3 slim 120 gb model my friend went through two xbox 360s, i bought my ps3 in June of 2010, i was a senior in Highschool and about 18 years old, it has thousands and thousands of hours on it, i even let my friend borrow it and he put a crap ton of hours on it as well, it has also been dropped on a hard wood floor twice and been mailed to Alaska, its been toted around in a suitcase while i was experiencing homelessness in 2015-2016, its been with me when i started over the road truck driving across the USA in 2017, and now that i'm 32 years old now, it still sits on my entertainment system and it still runs like the day i bought it. no other console has been through as much as that one and is the oldest console out of my 10 other systems i own.
I once had a remote control last for 20 years. Same batteries.
@@GamingTheSystems1 Hah that's pretty funny. The Casio watch of remote controls. I'm surprised the batteries didn't leak. There's a video on CZcams of a lightbulb that has been on and working fine for over 120 years in a California fire department. It has been in use since 1901.

The Sega CD has always been a wonderful system to play on from time to time. It truly made your Genesis experience pop off more then anything else, and there were always some amazing moments on that thing.
It had some of the best games ever on it.
I love these stories of yours, thanks for sharing. I do hope that console-wise things went better for you from there on out :)
I always happen to stumble across one of your videos once every once in a while. Im never disappointed. I like your content. Earned a sub here.
I bought a used sega cd in early 93 for about $200, it didn’t have any of the discs so I took it to a Toys R Us told them that I bought it from them and that it didn’t have any of the discs and they exchanged my used one for a brand new one. Needless to say you can’t get away with that now.

There is one hidden Ouya. Please don't timestamp so that people can enjoy the hunt.

I'm a metal head. But I never liked Metallica. And my favorite Grunge band is Nirvana. So I was wondering if you also likes them.
The Sega CD loved Layne Staley so much it didn't want to spit out your CD. Good thing you didn't put a mad season CD in it. Your Sega CD would have blew up to keep the cd.
@Smartperson2574 oh buddy, does it feel good to be a dick?
Wow, that CD has a song by Lush! Such a great band.
Thank you for this video. You did an excellent job on it.

Man in the Box is from Facelift.
@@fishactivation5087 I know, but it’s still Alice in Chains.
Edit: I couldn’t think of any songs off of Dirt that appealed to me including Rooster so I opted for this one.
Unfortunately, rock radio has killed Man in the Box for me. So that's the only song on that album that I really don't care for anymore.
I appreciate this story so much. The number of times that really bad video game stuff was happening and my parents didn't care is staggering but really forced me to troubleshoot. I hope you're enjoying this system now - I still want one real bad.
I love your content. Keep it up
As someone who was born in 2004, it's always weird to me hearing people talk about how they were big fans of my favorite bands back when they were new, especially when you guys talk about having to buy albums on CD to listen to them at all instead of just buying vinyls for fun.
Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands, with Tripod being my third-favorite album ever (with 10,000 Days by TOOL at #1 and Ocean Machine by Devin Townsend at #2). I wonder if any copies of it got eaten in a CD player or a game system.
I’m pretty sure one of them met with the wrath of a crappy car stereo.
Also vinyl bad, buy cds more economical and better sounding
@@tezcanaslan2877 Vinyl is more collectable and the music is etched onto each record rather than just burned onto it. If I just wanted a big collection of CDs, I'd just go to Walmart, but a giant stack of CD-Rs, and burn my favorite albums onto them.
@@fishactivation5087 what? Original CD’s are pressed, not burned. Music is also “etched” (in the data layer) to the CD. CD’s are also more collectable I would argue. A CD that has been taken proper care of and played a lot will be in better condition than a vinyl that was treated with equal care and played the same amount as with the CD which is good for collectability. I would even argue that collectability is not that important, not every hobby has to be funds for your future plans it’s important that they bring fun.
I too had bad luck with the sega cd. Mine was getting one of the early ones that just didn't work right out of the box. Man, seeing all that stuff it came with brings back memories.
I had forgotten about Sherlock Holmes. Really made a good impression.
- I also had issues with my Mega CD just after getting it for Xmas 1993. I got Sewer Shark, despite wishing Batman. I find Sewer Shark quite nice, though.

I'd be pissed if I lost AIC Dirt in a time before the Internet.
SNES has a 5amp "pico" fuse. Its soldered but ez to replace. Ive replaced 2.
That's a really good tip about the fuse. Maybe I'm in the market for a Sega CD now.
I too had Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. I actually enjoyed it and I still have the notes I took when trying to solve it. It was actually satisfying, but there was no replay value at all.

Your situation with the First Rollout of the Generation 0I Sega CD (NTSC~U) reminds me very much of my own situation with Digital Converter Boxes: I have worked with Two brands over the years, DigitalStream was what we got back when we were doing the shift from Analogue to Digital on June 0I2 of 2009 and Mediasonic's Homeworx is the brand that I opted for in recent years to try and get my old Analogue setups back in action; DigitalStream's option in 2009 was the DTX9900 and Mediasonic's was the HW130STB, all Three units (two of the former; one of the latter) all came with incredibly cheap Capacitors that will burn out (usually in the form of a small yet loud Crack~like explosion) when you run them around the clock and the fact that they have no form of cooling only delivers insult to injury because it has made it virtually impossible to do anything on these units without possibly sidelining them to get a High Definition Television for full~time use in the Editing Room.
~ The two DTX9900 units lasted me Seven and Eight years, respectively, the first had its capacitors blow in August of 20I6 and the other one was done a matter of months later; DigitalStream manufactured these with a very wide form factor for the time, making it significantly easier to dissipate heat than most current units on the market from other brands, it is easily one of the most stable options that we had in the Early Era of Digital Converter Boxes and while it doesn't come with Multimedia Functionality nor DVR resources it is still one of the most solid products that you could get and anybody with good soldering skills can easily bring any unit back from the dead.
~ The HW130STB has only been on my person since September 0I2 of 2022, we got it during a Mercury Retrograde and the capacitors blew on me this past Sunday (April 02I of 2024, for those reading this deep into the future; this too, was during a Mercury Retrograde), there were at least Two or Three incredibly loud pops and cracks from the box on April 020 and 02I to tell me what was happening and despite being plugged into an incredibly durable Surge Protector (a Belkin Premiere Series SurgeMaster II (Skeleton Model) from I998), simple fact of the matter is that Mediasonic and Homeworx made these boxes with an Ultra Compact design that not only packs too much heat in a suffocating environment, but it also was produced by its Chinese division in an incredibly difficult manner to service because it has no Screws and it forces users to have to literally break the box open (and also its Remote) simply to get to the PCB; the capacitors used are very Low Grade and akin to First Generation Sega CD units it is very easy to break these without being able to repair unless you know exactly what you are doing and which parts are the safest and most effective to last for Around the Clock usage under consistent Heavy Load.
What happened with your unit is definitely a major oversight, on the part of Sega, the parts it was working with were probably the best that Japan had on hand at the time though and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing owners of the original NTSC~J units from I99I deliver similar stories that match up with your scenario if a Power Surge ever happened in the region; in reality, the Sega CD should've been its own console from the get~go with Megadrive Compatibility (pretty much what the Multi~Mega and CDX ultimately became in I994), I would've definitely expected more from its 0299.95$ USD pricetag because as a Multimedia system that could play Audio CDs and deliver Karaoke Night through its CD+G Reader this is too expensive to get as what is essentially a glorified Peripheral, the Compact Disc was roughly Nine Years into its run when the Sega CD debuted in I99I and for many who didn't want a CD~i or couldn't get a ThreeDO (which keep in mind came with a Five Disc CD Changer if you got the N-1005 "Robo" model) this was one of the cheapest consoles at the time with an effective library of games and media compatibility that it would've easily sold more units for cheaper if it was both a Standalone option and an effective way to evolve the standard of game development as we waited for the Neptune and Sega Saturn.
Just listened to dirt on vinyl record,it’s some of the best music of that era
Tyler Esposito got his SEGA CD for Christmas in 1992. Mikey and Manny got theirs for Christmas in 1994. His channel is called My Retro Life.
Sega CD has some really gems on it, some of my favs are: popful mail, lords of thunder, Sonic CD, Lunar. Best part is Sega CD has no copy protection so you can just play burned CD games.
Snatcher
You forget the Sega CD was like the PS2 with the Bluray player.
You hooked the CD to your Genesis and it to a decent shelf system and you got a free home CD player too.
Love it!
The real tragedy here is the lost Alice in chains dirt CD.
I would have returned it to the music store for a new CD, screw the system.
Losing that CD would have left me feeling down in a hole.
I had both an SNES and got a Genesis Model 2 around 1993 or so. I think at that time both systems were around $100 to $150 and as you know had all kinds of games on them. I did have a desire to get the Sega CD. But $300 was a lot of money in 1993 and my parents laughed at the thought of me getting an add on for that price. Even when it went down in price to $250 in 1994 it was just not happening. I didn’t complain too much though. Between both systems I had enough gaming to keep me occupied all the way till I got the N64 in 1997. By then the Sega CD was a distant memory.
I'd be so upset if I lost one of my favorite albums like that, especially back then when you'd have to physically go buy another copy.
The greatness of that album is astronomical
These thumbnails without context are amazing
If you give away the story in the thumbnail, nobody would need to watch the video.

I got the Sega CD for Xmas 1992 and it remains the most excited for any Christmas ever, to this date. I would sneak in my parents closet and peek at it months in advance. It was so mysterious. I woke up at 2 AM Christmas day to hook it up. Was an amazing day.
I peeped at Masters of the Universe figures my mom was hiding in the closet. They were already wrapped, but I found ways.
I got my Sega CD for Christmas in 1992. I really loved that system despite it's shortcomings. The actually good games on it are pretty charming. And mine lasted me a loooooooooong time.
I would have been pissed too if I lost my copy of Dirt at that age. Absolutely classic album.
I got a Sub Pop sampler with my Sega Saturn pre-purchase. Allegedly some people got a Suburban Base comp when they bought Virtua Cop.
Wait, you mean like old school Breakbeat Hardcore and Jungle Suburban Base Records? No way.
@@sigmareviews Yes, it’s called Club Saturn. I’ve got it on cd somewhere. Don’t get too excited if you’re expecting nothing but Ice Cream & Syrup (Hard Mix). The jungle on it is pretty sparse, lazy and throwaway and then there’s all of the poorly done house music. 😂. The Su. Pop comp was called “That Virtua Feeling - Sub Pop and Sega Get Together” which just reeks of cotton ringer t-shirts and khakis.
Terminator and Final Fight are awesome on Sega CD. Heart of the Alien is only on Sega CD if you're into that style of game.
Back then it was a choice of a console add on for $300 or a completely new console or handheld for the same price, or 5-7 brand new games. The add on was never a thought for me.
when I bought an Xbox 360 slim in 2011, I remember it broke in literally a few hours. I played it then I took a shower and came back and the disc drive wouldn’t stop opening over and over by itself so I couldn’t play it.
The simple solution would have been an externally replaceable fuse port, like an automobile fuse you can easily replace. But that would have prevented them from making those sweet repair sales after the warranty expired.
I had a Sega CD (model 1) as well, the only title I had was Sonic CD. My Sega CD was constantly freezing, and I didn't get more games for it. I still own it.
[When I got my Sega CD, I had to take my console back because it didn't include the bundle that you showed. My dad also bought it on layaway.]
I bring up the layaway, because by the time we got it out of layaway, they stopped producing games for it. 😅
I swore off buying another Sega product.
You could burn the Sherlock Holmes game to a cdr. The Sega cd doesn't have any copy protection built in.
I don't have a burner, nor any blank CDs, so I might as well buy the game.

Tomcat alley was a gem to play!
On the "Rock Paintings" disc, it is a CD+Graphics. Part of the CD Standard is the ability to display a slideshow of still images and lyrics on a screen provided your CD player has a graphics decoder. In addition to Sega CD, the Philips CD-I Player also had the ability to display graphics, and CD Karaoke players can also display the graphics. The graphics are stored in one of the subcode channels on the disc, and my Philips CD-i player would automatically display the graphics if they were present on the CD.
I have a number of CDs with Graphics including "Behind the Mask" by Fleetwood Mac, "Information Society" (self titled), "Tokyo Rose" by Van Dyke Parks, Laura Branigan (self titled), and "Eat or be Eaten" by The Firesign Theatre. I also have a sampler disc from GRP that shows the full capabilities of CD+Graphics, it provides a full review of each track's artist. It's unfortunate that graphics weren't implemented on all CDs even if they couldn't be displayed with the early players. One of the complaints about CD over LP is the size of the album art with CDs. Well, with graphics it is possible to display large album art, liner notes, running lyrics, and other information on any TV set via a graphics decoder on the CD player.
Model 2 > Model 1...for both the Genesis and the Sega CD.
My Sega CD came with the Sherlock Holmes and side-scrolling shooter but not the Arcade pack. Instead, it came with Sewer Shark.
I remember renting the model 1 from the video store when it was new.. I didn't get one until the model 2 was out.

I also wasn't as excited for it as I was when I first got my SNES which was more of an upgrade in everyway whereas the Sega CD seemed like more of a half step.

This reminds me of when my mother would lend my game systems to be older brother who had moved out. EVERY TIME I got my system back, it was damaged.
After he damaged my Sega Genesis and my Super Nintendo, I asked my mom to not lend him my consoles anymore. Less than a week later, I come home from school and my gameboy is missing. I asked her if she saw it, and she said she lent it to him. It came back completely broken.
After that, I hid my consoles when I wasn't using them. My brother came over, turned my room upside down, found my Playstation, took it home and brought it back broken.
I eventually had to buy a damn SAFE to keep my consoles in just to keep them out of his hands because my mother would keep letting him take and abuse my games.
I’ve lost an Amy Grant Music of the Spirit disc long ago. I just got the empty jewel case for it. I couldn’t find the disc anywhere. They are hard to find for a good price anywhere. It’s pretty rare.
The first SEGA Saturn I bought... I was so worried about dust collecting on it that I'd put a cloth over it when I wasn't playing it. Then one day it would only boot to the CD player screen, and the 2 sound cubes (polygons) on the left and right to indicate the sound levels were large reddish spheres (as if a loud sound was constantly playing) but it would not play any discs. I'm not sure exactly what made that happen, but I still kind of believe it was due to it overheating from the cloth I'd put on it. 😞 It was never dropped or abused in any way.
I took the improved sound for granted back then. Now I really appreciate it.
It rode the lightning then took its final nap in the dirt.
This happened to me as well, though with a model 2. Got another functional machine used later on and kept my original, since it'd be e-waste. Since I was still unaware of the fuse at a later time, I exchanged the motherboard to make a Frankenstein unit. So... at least it works, I guess.
sega cd isnt that bad but releasing 32x few months before saturn should have been a crime
Sega CD at least had some God tier games on it even if just a few.
"Modest collection" lol, you have Lunar! That makes up for anything! Plus, I'm a sucker for Eteranl Champions. It's a good collection. I got my Sega CD from Toys R Us in 1999 for 20 dollars, all i had was Dracula and Double Switch
That Sega CD ended up a big old pile of them bones. It went down in a hole.
Keep up with ur stories bro, underrated
Did you get a replacement for your AiC CD? If so, when? Do you still have it now?
No, I never bought or was given a replacement.
We had an early version of the model one. Sherlock homes would skip in some areas, but the other pack in games worked. I then got the game Willy Beamish and that game also skipped. We took it to Software etc and from what I remember hearing from the clerk, they said a bunch of the early models were defective and they gave us a replacement.
Also, I found it interesting as a kid that I could put Sol Feace in my regular cd player and it would play the music from the game!
I own a Sega CD front loader got it on release date still works perfect
Liked you're righteous, suscribed
Everyone knows an Alice in Chains CD KILLS the system. Rookie mistake 😂
I got the model one Sega CD for Christmas in 1992, had all those add ins plus "Sewer Shark" I also had that "Road Avenger" game, but the FMV game I played the most by far was "Night Trap" which generated a little bit of controversy at the time because it was basically a cheesy slasher film, I had Dracula too, but I hated that game because it was pretty hard. Silpheed was "the big one" on that system because of the poly graphics at the time. My first experience with Doom was on the 32X also.
I had the model 2 as a kid but I always wanted the model 1
Seems when you put in AIC's DIRT it led to the console having a heroin overdose.
R.I.P.
There are Mega Drive\Genesis cartridges with 6 games, so I think a Sega CD could fit one heck of a lot more media on it than the highest capacity cartridges.
You could fit a good chunk of the entire Mega Drive \Genesis game library on one CD!
I did the opposite. Put my sega cd games into my stereo. "They're CDs so it should work." Sometimes it would actually play the audio tracks from the games. Or clips of game sounds. Discovering the secret track on Mortal Kombat at that young age felt like finding one eyed willy's treasure.
That's cool. I know that certain Dreamcast games can be put into a CD-Rom drive on a computer, and there are some files you could find, with photos and stuff. It was a feature that they wanted you to do.
The Model 1 CD unit did not like to be turned upside down. The plastic track that turns and allows the lense to clear when inserting a disk either breaks or becomes dislodged. At least they had the good sense to correct it down the road.
Well, I'm pretty sure I never turned it upside down before the problem happened.
I bought a Sega CD from this guy one time.
Ten years later - BAM! Herpes. And Sega exited the console hardware business.
Always wanted a Sega CD
Got hit by a truck once while running across the road. Had a Sonic CD in my coat. Couldn’t feel my knees for a year but that case held up awesome.
9:02 let me get this straight... In order to protect their device from a power surge, they added a component that could be easily replaced by the owner, but decided to put it inside the unit making it technically unserviceable and seemingly dead by the owner instead? Yikes
Alice in chains caught my eye
I am now GLAD that I've never had a sega cd! We get WAAAAAY too many thunderstorms here, and I'm not exaggerating! I was woken up by one, and I was so irritated that I actually screamed, "SHUT UP!!!!!" Then, about a minute later, lightning struck right outside my window. No joke.
Love Road Avenger! 🙂👍👍👍
The same thing happened to me with the PlayStation I was playing games and music cds one day and it didn’t work the next. Idk about the fuse thing but we returned it and the next PlayStation worked for many years after until I traded it in for something else.
My most favorite SegaCD game is Wheel Of Fortune!
If you add a 32X, then you need to plug in 3 power bricks. But they won't all fit on a normal 6-outlet surge protector. You need a squid-type extension cord. But those didn't exist in the early 90s, so I wonder what Sega recommended for people who only had 1 outlet near the TV (You also need an outlet for the TV). I guess you'd just use 2 power strips.
I bought my 32x and my sega cd from toys r us brand new for 30 dollars total. Man those were the days.
