Troy, a balk is when a pitcher makes a movement forwards towards home plate, but then picks off a runner. You cannot make a deceiving move like you are going to pitch and then pick off a runner. If you do, they call a balk and the runner advances a base.

Also doesn’t have to even be a deceiving move, any movement that isn’t fluid with pitching motion is considered a balk. Once your set you can’t readjust, you can’t move your foot(except for stepping off), and you can’t throw off the mound unless you step behind the rubber
@@keanandarnell8709 not necessarily for the rubber thing. Lefties to first don’t have to step off the rubber before they throw, same with both R/L to second and righties to third. It’s why stealing second on a lefty is trickier.

It's OK Troy, I've been following baseball for 20 years and I'm still not 100% sure what a balk is.
Also, my cousin is probably the only A's fan glad that they're moving to Vegas, but that's because he became an A's fan because he was already a Raiders fan (and became a Dallas Stars fan in hockey because of the Mavericks).
If you throw a pitch without being in set position, it's called a balk. Any runner on base will move up one base.
(Set position means not moving)

A balk is where you do anything out of what a normal windup is. Such as no leg kick. Also if you step to pitch the ball to the plate but let's say a runner was stealing and you threw the ball to any other bag that would be a balk. It just never happens because you can't really balk
