  • How to check and adjust valve clearance on a Husqvarna Vitpilen 401. Comment if you have questions, or want me to send you the guide I printed out. I live in south east Indiana if I can be of any help. This really is not all that hard to be honest with you. Personally I don't trust anyone else to touch my vehicles. Even if done right you will not be able to tell the difference. How do you know if they did it right or did it at all until it is too late. Not to mention long wait times to get you bike back and $$$. I love riding and I hope this video helps someone else. Good luck and wear your gear you'll be glad you did.

    Althought I will NEVER try to do this myself I really appreciate that you did and put it on camera.

    Dude it's so cool to see someone with mechanical knowledge work on this bike who's not a Husqvarna/KTM mechanic... I own a 2020 701 Vitpilen with 2500 miles so I'm not quite there as far as this service goes. And obviously the tolerance are different. But I love this niche American community built around these punchy thumpers.
    I'm a natural gas compressor mechanic as well so I also appreciate the direct approach to your video. Thank you for your time sir!

    Excellent and interesting video. It's much appreciated. Although the main thing I learned is that I'm safer paying my dealer $500 for this operation :).

    ...mate; I have 18000km on the engine; recently I changed the filters; oil etc but I think I feel that cost more to the bike to go higher speed...I am not sure enough but could be that is in the need of checking the valve clearances however, seems not possibly to check without all that top end dismantling...I mean; is crazyness to tear up all that to only check! (if the specs are good enough) like the same as if you need to change parts.
    I rebuilt my old Triumph engines etc but I never open a new engine even less with the engine in the frame that is a pain in the arse.
    Seems a difficult task to not finish with an even poorer motor...
    Cheers

      It's hard to find a mechanic you can trust or that's not booked 6 weeks out.

    Hey, mate. Thanks for the video. Can you include in info link to service manual pdf?

      I got it off the official KTM website. I had originally asked aomc.com support staff where to get the manual from and they sent me a web link. I tried finding it myself today for you but couldn't find it. I'm sorry.

    Hey, can you send me the info you talked about in the end of the vid? I’m due for this and would like to do it myself. I have the service manual already. Those shims, you still think that’s the brand to buy?

    • @bushidosteelcraft1677
      @bushidosteelcraft1677  Před 11 měsíci

      I still think that those are the shims to go with. Email me at bushidosteelcraft@gmail.com and I'll send you that word document I made.

    If you don't this check what would you feel when the valves are out of specifications?

    • @bushidosteelcraft1677
      @bushidosteelcraft1677  Před rokem +3

      All of mine were out of spec. Putting them back in spec helps prevent wear and damage. It can lead to valve seat wear in the head, trimming issues and loss of power. Much more expensive repair costs.

    Do you recommend the Mitutoyo calipers over the Starrett ones?

    • @bushidosteelcraft1677
      @bushidosteelcraft1677  Před 2 lety +1

      Those are both good options there's also Brown & Sharpe and Fowler. If you do really want to go digital make sure they go out at least three decimal places or they will be worthless to you.

    • @johnsolimine1164
      @johnsolimine1164 Před 2 lety +1

      @@bushidosteelcraft1677 Digital calipers are only good to +/_ .0005" With a dial caliper, you can read half of that, or .00025". IMO, the older, no longer available Mitutoyo calipers were the best. My next choice are the Starrett's and although theyhave kind of bulky jaws, the Brown & Sharpe's are next. Cheap calipers are worth nothing
