    Today I build a modification to my car created by Comma.ai called the Comma Neo. This device augments the existing lane keep assist and radar adaptive cruise control systems to make them into a level 2 autonomous system. Come with me as I fail and succeed building this device piece by piece.

    Roads and highways need to have added WIFI or low power radio legal speed transmitters alongside them that throttle back legal speeds cars and other vehicles can drive on them during poor weather conditions and road crew work. Cars can read the currently legal speed limit from the devices with WiFi or low power radio receivers as they pass by to automatically control the vehicles' speeds. DMV crews can attach these transmitters for smart cars to their visible speed limit signs (but they need to be locked physically and software-wise so they aren't hacked! Even if such a system were hacked, the cars using the systems should be smart enough to disregard insanely high speed limits being output by a hacked, malfunctioning, or defective speed transmitter device) Jim Blier (Waldoboro, Maine).

    • @breakingthemasks
      @breakingthemasks Před 6 lety +2

      James Blier ...what? That's a terrible idea. Why require that sort of infrastructure?
      1. Smart cars can use the average speed of traffic to infer the proper speed.
      2. Computer vision can read speed komiy signs easily.
      3. GPS can be used in conjunction with a database of speed vs location

    I'm surprised they don't have a proprietary serial (or whatever that is) to ethernet cable they sell on the forum too. It's kind of an important piece of the device that you have to strip and solder yourself? Definitely a cool concept. I would love to get behind it.

  • @linagee
    @linagee Před 7 lety +38

    1:05 "We've got the Ethernet", technically it's RJ45. It's meant to connect to a CAN bus which you are accessing by unhooking the lane keep assist camera module.

    • @linagee
      @linagee Před 7 lety +3

      APEXstudios: RJ45 is the connector. Ethernet is the protocol. Ethernet can also be used over older coax connectors. Important not to confuse the two, even if 99.999% of everyone out there does.
      (Cisco also uses RJ45 connectors for something that's not Ethernet. They have serial console cables that use RJ45.)
      The protocol and the physical connector are two separate things. (And with DIY RJ45 connector stuff, NEVER assume the pinout.)

      It is theoretically possible, especially if you wanted to use external motors. github.com/openmechanics/openmechanics/blob/master/README.md But for now, the easiest thing to do is have a car with lane keep assist and radar adaptive cruise control built in.

    I'm a bit confused....your car seems to already have a lane departure camera, and would also then have radar cruise control....so, your car basically has level 1-2 self driving when the cars lane departure and radar adaptive cruise is engaged....unless I'm missing something, you basically took away the cars features it already posses, and in turn replaced it with an open source system that just replicated what the car already has the capability to do. Does this do something that the factory software is not capable of doing? I dont see many differences from what the factory honda software does....elaborate if I am incorrect. Cool stuff though, thanks for sharing!

    Well done on your efforts so far, but as an electronics engineer, may I suggest that you really DO make the effort to bring your soldering technique up to a much higher level of competence? Looking at the results of the work you have done on the existing cabling I have to say that it is shockingly bad, and at serious risk of failing - particularly with the inevitable vibrations the components will encounter during use. You need to make sure that the wiring is adequately insulated right up to the pins, and that the finished plug(s) are complete with their covers, and with edequate strain relief on the cable in situ. After all, we are not talking about a trivial piece of kit here; your life, and the lives of others could potentially be in danger if catastrofic failure of the system occurred. Take care, and the best of luck with your endeavours.
