- This video is outdated!! Watch my installation guide on the Comma EON (The next gen NEO!) • openpilot Installation...
Today I build a modification to my car created by Comma.ai called the Comma Neo. This device augments the existing lane keep assist and radar adaptive cruise control systems to make them into a level 2 autonomous system. Come with me as I fail and succeed building this device piece by piece.

“I don’t even know how to solder.....let’s make a self driving car !!!”
LOL
The moment you realize that the connectors don't match at 5:00 ... when in doubt just go to Wallymart he-he
The guy has got some guts to do this. But it's totally worth the risk.
well to be fair thats exactly what comma ai's plan is
"Once you're done, you're done." Truer words have never been spoken...
What an awesome thing, I had no idea this kind of stuff existed. Really looking forward to the next episode and seeing how it looks with the printed housing.
That's really nice Chris! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Man, that was a great vid! Looking forward to the next ones.
Way cool. Thanks for sharing Chris!
"Always keep hands on wheel. Be ready to take over at any time."
It's a legal requirement
5:02 when you realized the cables was gay
Shouldn't it be were instead of was? I'm a foreigner myself, so I am not a grammar nazi:)
@@dieabsolutegluckskuche5174 cable was, or cables were
nicely put together
can't wait for the next episode
That's an awesome project!I want to try this!
Nice project....not sure i would have recommended the first test to be at nighttime, but I guess....YOLO?
What a great video! So interesting, looking forward for ep.2! When does it expected?
Later this week ;D
Excited af
Really glad to see him using a OnePlus 3/T
Awesome video.
Excellent Series!
Thanks Chris.
BTW, I got confused when you called the vehicle in front of yours the "follow car". Might want to call that car a "pace car." Should at least sound cooler.
Superb ... 👍
super cool
That's awesome!
Great video! I would heatshrink those connections if they aren't already fixed up
From Minecraft: I banned you! To the future of legal drunk driving! Kidding bro!! Keep up the good work!! Your work is the future man! The more you do....the better they can! 😍 I can tell you've worked REALLY hard on this! And I give you an A+!! Keep going Chris! You ain't done yet! 😊
Awesome 👍
Roads and highways need to have added WIFI or low power radio legal speed transmitters alongside them that throttle back legal speeds cars and other vehicles can drive on them during poor weather conditions and road crew work. Cars can read the currently legal speed limit from the devices with WiFi or low power radio receivers as they pass by to automatically control the vehicles' speeds. DMV crews can attach these transmitters for smart cars to their visible speed limit signs (but they need to be locked physically and software-wise so they aren't hacked! Even if such a system were hacked, the cars using the systems should be smart enough to disregard insanely high speed limits being output by a hacked, malfunctioning, or defective speed transmitter device) Jim Blier (Waldoboro, Maine).
James Blier ...what? That's a terrible idea. Why require that sort of infrastructure?
1. Smart cars can use the average speed of traffic to infer the proper speed.
2. Computer vision can read speed komiy signs easily.
3. GPS can be used in conjunction with a database of speed vs location
You should never *physically* restrict a driver from doing anything.
I'm surprised they don't have a proprietary serial (or whatever that is) to ethernet cable they sell on the forum too. It's kind of an important piece of the device that you have to strip and solder yourself? Definitely a cool concept. I would love to get behind it.
Mate, your video is really awesome and impressive. Looking forward your next project.
hey chris, i am very exciting to see all these. could u possible to show how to install neo on oneplus3?
Great Job Chris ..... Please Let me know where to get the Main Board , as i tried to make one and failed . Eagerly waiting , thanks in Advance .
good job kiddo!!
Hi! Awesome video! Where could i get the complete instructions to make a thing like that?
1:05 "We've got the Ethernet", technically it's RJ45. It's meant to connect to a CAN bus which you are accessing by unhooking the lane keep assist camera module.
APEXstudios: RJ45 is the connector. Ethernet is the protocol. Ethernet can also be used over older coax connectors. Important not to confuse the two, even if 99.999% of everyone out there does.
(Cisco also uses RJ45 connectors for something that's not Ethernet. They have serial console cables that use RJ45.)
The protocol and the physical connector are two separate things. (And with DIY RJ45 connector stuff, NEVER assume the pinout.)
linagee I just learned that. From now on, I'll continue to say ethernet cable because otherwise, people wouldn't understand me or think I'm a pompous ass.
Yeah true but I see nothing wrong calling it ethernet :P
AHCKTUALLY
You are the best one
This is going to beat driverless vehicles to market. Car companies are too chickens***.
love it
Can't you use the existing camera in the car with this system?
Do you have to use the mobile camera.?
Like having the system somwhere else so that you can use your back mirror?
Sivert Andre Lund You'd need to be able to modify the software in the car.. Easier to just use your own HW, which you can use your own sw.
I have been following comma.ai for over a year now and ant wait until i can afford a civic
so this is rather interesting. I can see this coming in handy say if your doing an EV conversion on a car, at least from my understanding. weather it be with the Comma Neo or using Auto Pi for that self driving DIY Tesla.
hey dude , awesome video!
i wanna try this but do you know where i can find a list of car's this will work on?
thanks
github.com/commaai/openpilot
Got an update video? Interested to see how you are getting on with it.
It should be up later this week :)
is there now?
I love this!! I wish i. Could do it
can you do this in an old car? Such as a 99 or do es your car have to have self driving features already integrated?
It is theoretically possible, especially if you wanted to use external motors. github.com/openmechanics/openmechanics/blob/master/README.md But for now, the easiest thing to do is have a car with lane keep assist and radar adaptive cruise control built in.
From what I understand this needs to have stock car lane sensing equipment for this to work?
Otherwise there would be no way for this to manipulate the steering.
What song is that at 2:50. Great work btw man!
Which sensors we need to have for this autopilot get working??
How did you flash your OnePlus 3?
can u tell me where u got that neo motherboard at? plz respond ASAP!!!
I am still waiting for new vids!
Guys does this only works on vehicles with electrical steering system or hydrolic systems too? My car has LDA but it only gives a warning it doesn't correct it self.
jesus taking the wheel
Did this throw a light on the dash for the self driving? Like a error message because the front camera was unplugged?
AUTO PILOT JUST KICKED IN YO!
Looks like that first printer needs taking care of, it's pretty wobbly
Your awesome
all videos are vague about which cars and year models are compatible with Open Pilot do you know
reminds me of mail order computers from back in the early 80s. just a collection of circuit boards and wires with random connectors and nothing to house them in....lol
how the car can move the steering wheel, there is no motor?
Or happens this with the steering servo asisst?
Cool.
I'm a bit confused....your car seems to already have a lane departure camera, and would also then have radar cruise control....so, your car basically has level 1-2 self driving when the cars lane departure and radar adaptive cruise is engaged....unless I'm missing something, you basically took away the cars features it already posses, and in turn replaced it with an open source system that just replicated what the car already has the capability to do. Does this do something that the factory software is not capable of doing? I dont see many differences from what the factory honda software does....elaborate if I am incorrect. Cool stuff though, thanks for sharing!
Factory LKAS is really bad on Honda Civic IMO.
Still subbed and interested bro! I even hit the bell to see when you'd upload! 😊
Thanks so much! :)
I would recommend mounting your fan on top of the heat sinks rather than the phone itself.
Hi there,
Could you guide me to install NEOS Os i on android !
Thanks
6:17 When the Neo said "Take Control", what did that little popup under the spedometer say?
looks like it says "Steering Required"
Which car models is this system compatible with ?
does anyone know where i can find that app with the road lines on it?
How do you flash the Android to install NEOS?
Looks like you need some LIQUID METAL
Hi bro.... whether this can turn right and left??? Whether it find the obstacles and slow down??? Please reply me bro...!!!!
Did you code this urswelf?
Cool, Unlucky I don't drive a Honda.
Why can’t the system use the camera in the phone and contact through the obdII
Hey man I live in Jamaica. I own a one plus and have no case. Can I have that model you use to make the case?
can you tell me how to get the main board? i am chinese, pls give me the message.thanks
IN HIS PAGE comma.ai/
Broooo my FC has no Honda Sensing. Can it work too? :-(
I like the shiii* out of this great !
Is it compatible with other vehicles?
This only works for hond's with honda sensing feature...right?
Where i can get rear camera online
Does it only use a OnePlus 3?
The cooling design is absolutely terrible.
Is this possible with an oneplus 3t
so who dares to nap in a self drive car
Why is that otg cable so expensive? You could buy one for less than $1 here...
M Isa convenience. If you want something right away chances are you're going to pay more for it than waiting for it to come in the mail
Joshua Collins don't buy it online...
Joshua Collins I'm not talking about buying it online, im saying that I can buy an otg cable from stores near me for less than $1
Does this work on RC car?
looking for an update
Wow
can you please share the custom ROM files to flash on my android phone
Where do I find one? I wanna make my own!
Check out comma.ai you can buy all the hardware there for under 1000 bucks and it's so much nicer than this old stuff!
why has google not scout this guy?
Noseefood Because he didn’t make this. George Hottz did this guy is just using his open source product.
Wtf I didn't know you were Minecraft4Meh lmfao
No todas las carreteras estan marcadas y tienen asfalto el sistema debería tomar otros puntos de referencias
Well done on your efforts so far, but as an electronics engineer, may I suggest that you really DO make the effort to bring your soldering technique up to a much higher level of competence? Looking at the results of the work you have done on the existing cabling I have to say that it is shockingly bad, and at serious risk of failing - particularly with the inevitable vibrations the components will encounter during use. You need to make sure that the wiring is adequately insulated right up to the pins, and that the finished plug(s) are complete with their covers, and with edequate strain relief on the cable in situ. After all, we are not talking about a trivial piece of kit here; your life, and the lives of others could potentially be in danger if catastrofic failure of the system occurred. Take care, and the best of luck with your endeavours.
How could i try this on a 2012 civic without lane assist?
Shariq Mohammad - it's easy, all you need to do is take control of your vehicle and pay attention.
SYRACUSE!!!
lol they ship a motherboard that is ultimately be the cause of you being alive or dead in a box just bouncing around lol. IDK if ill trust that board, ill be too worried one day on a free way it shorts or a solder breaks off and I go flying ito the divider.
can you plz text me back of who you got the motherboard from. we are trying to do this too. plz text back asap!!!
i imagine getting caught with this in germany. you would get in real trouble if a cop would see that in your car.
5:10 LOL
"It's in this bag for safety. ofcourse" Sigh.. That's an anti-static bag.. -_-
All I have to say is damn.
But can it run Crysis?
