STOP puppy BITING clothes

  • This training game teaches puppies not to bite at your clothes, accessories, shoes, shoelaces and hair. This is one of the first games to play with your new puppy. My puppy in the video is 8 weeks old and I had just gotten him a few days prior to the filming. The first few days I had my puppy I first worked on teaching him how to take treats nicely as well as how to do a calm settle around food.
    Here are two video tutorials on those topics:
    Calm settle - • Capturing Calmness- ho...
    Take treats nicely - • Take Treats NICELY and...
    It's important to use management and prevention between training sessions so your puppy doesn't rehearse the behavior. And if a mistake happens and the puppy starts to bite at something or someone quickly redirect the puppy to doing another behavior, such as playing with his toys or going to his bed. Here is a video on interrupting undesirable behaviors: • STOP unwanted behavior...
    In the video I demonstrate how to work with a dangling sweater, shoes and shoe laces but you can use this same method to work with your puppy on anything that your puppy shows interest in moving toward and biting... for example if you have long hair and the puppy wants to bite at it, bracelets, dresses, skirts, long jackets, or kids playing with their own toys you don't want the puppy to play with.
    Here is a list of the steps:
    Step 1 Mark as the distraction happens
    Step 2 Mark after the distraction begins
    Step 3 Add more time before you mark
    Step 4 Add difficulty and variety to the training

      This all looks great, a well-behaved puppy to work with makes it look easy. Does not show what one is to do when they do bite and not ignore the dangling clothes. When one gets up in the morning and cannot walk to make their breakfast. When they jump up at end tables, your socks, pants, sweaters and house coats. One does not always have a clicker in hand. Vet says treats are only suppose to be 10% of their diet. The puppies I see here are nothing like my beagle….lol.

    I have a 9 week old hound mix. He is 9 weeks old today and I got him Oct 31 so I’ve had him a little over a week. He has been doing really well with a lot of his training. He will make good eye contact when I say his name. He is going pretty good with potty training and crate training. He is good with sit, lay out, touch, we are working on leave it and drop it. So all in all he has done very well for his first week. The main problem he has is he will get over stimulated when we play and he will start aggressively biting at our feet/pant legs. I’ve worked on trying to desensitize him. When he is in training mode he listens very well and I can rub my feet all over him or hope around him and he just sits there making eye contact and being calm. And we will play well and then all the sudden it’s like a switch goes off and he decides to go for the feet and turns aggressive. I play with him calmly and try to keep his attention on the toys and not on me but the same cycle keeps happening everyday. He will wake up from a nap, I take him outside, maybe do some training outside/inside, we will play and then feet attack and I have to put him in his play pen. I also have different puzzles games for mental stimulation and he has like 3 kongs. I feel like I’m trying everything to make sure he is a well rounded dog but he keeps aggressive attacking our feet and I don’t know how to desensitize him cause like I said when he is in training mode he will listen. He is only 9 weeks old so maybe I’m expecting too much from him and hopefully he will grow out of this?... but it makes me sad cause I feel like I can’t play with my puppy and I have to keep putting him in his play pen. :( any advice?...

    I love watching how different trainers tackle this subject. Some popular trainers like to train in the moment for this, but I love how you tackle this before it becomes a habit. I see it everywhere puppy biting hands and clothes. Personally I trained my pup this same way, we never had a biting problem or chewing problem thank goodness! I got very lucky in that aspect.

      @@kikopup I say lucky because in every other aspect I feel as if I failed with him. Reactive (even though he was socialized) whines and barks constantly (although he gets plenty of exercise and training daily) and he has bad seperation anxiety, he even broke out of his crate and threw his body into my window and cracked it. (And that was when he was on anxiety medicine) But as for biting I got very lucky with that.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Před 4 lety +6

      Sorry to hear this. Honestly, when you have owned lots of dogs from a puppy you see that some dogs just have the genetics to be a certain way... Wish was always a very fearful reactive and anxious and guardy type of puppy and she still easily worried about things and anxious in new situations... But all my other dogs are amazing... but nothing bad happened to wish and sadly two of my other dogs were actually attacked by dogs... so... well.. sometimes its just genetics and the dogs personality. Sometimes even with friendly parents the puppy inherits the personality of the past relatives that might have been reactive or aggressive. The thing is one behavior issue can affect the others and things go in a downward spiral when things are going bad, but the good thing, is when you start to work on 1 behavior issue it can actually start to change things for the better with other behavioral issues and things start to go in an upward spiral. This is also another thing to keep in mind when training a dog like the one you have - dogmantics.com/too-much-of-a-good-thing-are-the-activities-your-dog-loves-doing-making-him-sick/

    We have a 3 month old golden retriever mix from the shelter. Generally he is doing well, but one problem we are having is him biting our clothes and backs of our legs and ankles. If I am holding treats he doesn't always do it. It is difficult for us to walk around the house! If we say, No, and try to redirect with a toy, sometimes he will take it but usually he will begin to growl and bark at us, chasing as we walk away. He sits, speaks, lays down, and shakes on command so he is doing well with other training commands. Any suggestions for this specific problem?

    I wish my puppy would pay attention to distractions. Sometimes I can call him, give food, toys or literally put whatever in his mouth and he just insists on chewing my armchair. Then I have no choice but to pick him up and put him in a play pen. Or sometimes when we play, he'll just start biting me and jumping on me, and the only thing I've been able to do is stand up and start ignoring him. But I don't know if this will work in the long run...He's a corgi, and I know some of these behaviors are natural to him, but I still feel like I could do more. I am just not sure what.

      @kikopup  Před 4 lety +1

      If you are worried your dog is distracted by the food you can teach eye contact first to make sure your puppy is looking at your face instead of just starring at the treat. You can also work on games to teach your puppy to not be obsessed with the food czcams.com/video/DR831Q2fv-U/video.html Honestly. My puppy never bit at my clothes or shoe laces again after this lesson. I know Im a professional trainer but I literally spent 10 minutes all together teaching him not to bite my clothes leash harness and my hands. The key to training is setting up the environment so that the puppy doesnt think to rehearse the behaviors. Building interest in playing with toys and not doing the movements right in front of the puppy that would initiate biting.

      This was my thinking, my 12 week old pup is an angel when I have a tub of treats in my hand, but when I don't, she chases the kids and bites their ankles. I'm guessing if I always have treats on me, she can "rehearse" good, calm behaviour enough that it becomes normal as she grows up and I won't need to treat as much. She is only young and still needs to play and bite, so I make sure she has toys and chews and control the environment. It's all about learning good habits and not setting them up to fail, right? Also, we're not all perfect and the frustration is real for both dog and owner - learn to walk away!

      @kikopup  Před 4 lety +1

      I know. Some puppies are more mouthy than others. They literally have spent their life just biting at all the things and other puppies. They use their mouths like toddlers use hands. So it feels overwhelming at first. Some puppies it takes them at least 3 weeks to reliably get down not biting at every moving object and human parts. Its like trying to train a baby human or toddler not to grasp at things held out in front of him. So it does take patience. But it is extremely important to prevent the behaviors from being practiced and reinforced. When going to let the puppy out of the pen use a high value treat and change the motivation from wanting to hang off your pants and hands to expecting sitting to get a treat. You can sit on the other side of the pen and wait for the puppy to calm down before letting the puppy out as well. And these games of watching the movement of something can be done while the puppy is in a pen and you can feed the treat over the pen then move the object in front of the pen at first to prevent the puppy doing an ambush attack on you. There is also this video on teaching handling czcams.com/video/3dMKR5i9iNQ/video.html where I also explain to really build the reinforcement value of things you want your puppy to bite at, so all his toys and chews.

Do I have to do this training session frequently?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Před 4 lety +1

      I suggest taping down the pee pads, and perhaps taking them away for a few days and just taking her out to the toilet more frequently. The most important thing to do is to get her invested in chewing the things that are appropriate. That behavior has to be more reinforcing than the pee pads, which I suppose are on the top of her list at the moment of fun things to chew on. Dont let her see you changing the pee pads either, because they can watch you moving them about and that can peak their interest in them. Where if they just get let back into the pen and the pee pads are taped down they are less interesting.

    How frequent should we do this training to make it a reliable behavior? My puppy does well during training. However, sometimes he's able to grab clothes from the rack or slippers and run away with them. When he's able to get them, it's quite difficult to get them back from him in spite of offering him treats or toys or asking him to drop. He even growls or whines when we try to take the stuff from him. When I catch him just about to grab clothes or shoes, I stop him by calling him to me and this works most of the time. But there are times when I'm not able to see him just before he does it and that's when it gets hard. Any advice? :)

      Sometimes its easier to just put away shoes and clothes and "stuff" in teh first few weeks as you build reinforcement of the toys you want them to play with, Let them play keep away games with the toys. You can pretend that the toys are super exciting yourself. Smart puppies are good at reading what we find valuable and can see we dont think the toys are valuable but our clothes.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Před 4 lety

      Are you sure you mean 6 weeks or 6 months? 6 weeks here in most states its illegal to take the puppy from the mom. If the pup is 6 weeks Id ask if there are still pups with the mom and if so return the puppy until 8 weeks, because if separated too early they can start to show very abnormal behavior when they grow up. This video goes over how long to train czcams.com/video/Wn9qtqlZguY/video.html And yes you will have to spread the training over sessions, as the puppy picks up the skills. I suggest working on the recall in training set ups like this _ czcams.com/video/iIR3MtTSyIw/video.html and using lots of different distractions. If your puppy is 6 weeks old though, and not 6 months, then work on just the basics of a recall and eye contact first.

      keep working on the calm settle and handling games, inbetween use management and prevention, have a large pen to put him in when hes excited. If he starts biting immediately redirect to a toy or put him in the pen. That way he wont rehearse the biting behavior. Its pretty normal. Its like a toddler wanting to grab things with their hands, so it will take a few weeks to train them not to try and bite everything in your house and your hands and clothes.

      If the puppy has spent his whole life mouthing his littermates, the behavior is going to take some time to change. The brain works similarly to fitness. If you do exercise in 1-3 days you wont see change but if you did exercises for 2 weeks you would see change. So for any problem behavior I suggest 12 short training sessions each day or 2 weeks of focusing on the issue. Inbetween training you can use management and prevention, reinforce the puppy for playing with toys with you and chewing on chew bones. If your puppy is in a really bity mood, have him play in his pen with his toys until he calms down and sit next to it out of reach so hes having to choose the toys over grabbing at you.

    This sounds great - but what do you do with a pup who just simply will *not* let go of whatever the item is, even for the highest possible value treat you have?
    I’ve got a *very* persistent biter, and unfortunately that includes grabbing my body parts and hanging on.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Před 3 lety +2

      First you could rule out medical issues, a check up with a vet to make sure the puppy is not acting like this because of illness. Is this a terrier? Or a puppy from a litter with other puppies with hair that could be grabbed? Or a singleton? Sometimes this can also happen if the puppies are allowed to just bite and hang on clothes when people are interacting with the puppies or that the puppies bite and hang on each other. If the puppy has been doing it their whole life with the litter it will take some time to change the behavior. Sometimes confinement can make this behavior worse, so I suggest not crating a puppy like this, but having the puppy in a pen with a bed area and toys so the puppy can make choices when not being watched. If your puppy grabs onto you quickly open the jaws as soon as you can and then carefully put the puppy into the pen. You can sit next to the pen with the pup out of reach. What you need to do is make sure to use management and prevention in between training sessions- if your puppy bites you when you let them out in the morning, have treats and lure the pup out of the pen in the morning with a treat. If the puppy starts to bite when there is a lot of movement, put the puppy in the pen before the movement happens. And I suggest focus specifically on this problem as being the number one problem to focus on, doing training sessions on this exercise and the handling and grooming exercises in this video in short training sessions daily for at least 12 days. czcams.com/video/AoM9tis3t2c/video.html You might need to get a professional trainer who doesnt use any forms of physical or psychological intimidation to help you with this training. I suggest not playing "hand games" where you let the puppy bite at your hands. Instead teach the puppy to take treats softly from hands czcams.com/video/KXDWbtx44b8/video.html Its important to prevent the puppy doing this behavior and reinforce appropriate interactions or it could get worse or never go away.

      @@kikopup Thank you so much for these suggestions and your quick reply! I’ll watch these other videos in the next day or so.
      He is actually a Standard Poodle, believe it or not, from a litter of 9, who were often commingled with another same-size litter the breeder had that was only a week or two older, so I would have thought for sure he would have had at least *some* bite inhibition, even though he was only 9 weeks old when he came home, but nope, not one iota, and none of the traditional wisdom about yipping, etc. has worked most of the time. Videos she posted showed them all getting along great, but he has also been afraid of both people and other dogs, plus has had terrible separation anxiety. Of course she swore he never had an issue there and sounded like she was blaming me for it. He is my third spoo, though, and neither of the other two had anywhere near these kinds of issues.
      He’s apparently perfectly healthy, but the behaviorist I consulted said I need to take him to a veterinary behaviorist, so I’m researching that now. Our puppy kindergarten instructor said she would consult with the school’s owner about which of them, or another trainer, might be best for us to work with. We will see her tomorrow.
      He *is* making progress on all of these, and I’m getting better at coordinating luring him away from biting me at least when we are leaving the elevator and coming down the hall to our apartment, but boy are my arms sore! And he’s destroyed three coats. At least they have somewhat protected my arms.
      Today has been his best day overall by far, amazingly with only one or two light nips - but once he gets hold of something loose he’s not supposed to have, there is a long and exhausting chase to try to catch him and get it from him because he is fast and cagey as the dickens, and once he does start the biting, it’s a heck of a battle, too.

      Yes, I suggest teaching go to the bed and lay down and get treats for laying there while you add distractions like a stay. If possible when introducing a new dog bed, you just work on the settle or go to the bed exercise then put it away. Choose things that the dog is least likely to want to chew. Have chews out for the dog to chew on and get the dog into seeking those to chew on when they need to chew. For chewing on furniture you can put something on the corners of the furniture that makes them less appealing to chew on such as bitter apple or wintergreen oil.

Do a training session a day, and then use management and prevention inbetween, redirecting the puppy to appropriate toys out and about to play with, And really build the reinforcement value of those toys by playing with your puppy with the toys when your puppy is not thinking about biting you- go and initiate a game with the toys

      Sometimes puppies have been biting on each other like this at the breeders and so continue doing it in the new home. It's important to use management and prevention outside of training and I would really put this as the number one issue to work on- play training games where you teach your dog to ignore moving shoes moving towels sweater sleeves hair etc, and also do these handling games czcams.com/video/3dMKR5i9iNQ/video.html and try to manage and prevent between training sessions, keep the puppy in a large pen he can play with toys and get reinforced for playing with the toys when you are unable to watch him 100%. If he does go for you when out and about I suggest picking him up immediately so he cannot rehearse playing tug on the clothing as this is extremely reinforcing for a lot of puppies and it will mean they will want to do it more in the future.

If the dog is left where someone can poison him, and the criminal sees the dog doesn't eat the poison, they might then shoot the dog. The safest place for a dog is inside the house when left alone, that way, the burglar is less likely to enter the home with the dog inside. Jeez. People are so rude with dogs! I mean no one would come up and touch your kids, your purse, your car... but they think they can come up and do stuff with your dog. I honestly tell some people from a distance "Sorry this is not my dog" and that makes them go away - either they think Im weird or they think if its someone elses dog its not ok to mess with it while the owner is gone. I suggest the video Iinked so your dog ignores food unless you said get it.

    See,i respect,what you do. And you do well. But a puppy of an australian shepheard bites you sweetly and you laugh about the small pain like
    getting tattooed. But an adult german shepheard bites you unbelieveable painful,even in the forearms,believe me,i made these experience.
    A grown up american Pitbull is too proud and has his own independend way to behave. You must accept a Pitbull as a friend or you die someday,because
    the nature of this best friend,he gives his life for you,is also a protection dog as wants to to tell"Let my friend go,or we both have a problem".
    You cannot make a grown up Pitbull to a clown.IMPOSSIBLE: It's your best friend and wants to go in the wood without human and dogs and make sport.
    THIS IS,WHAT PEOPLE NOT ACCEPT.THE PITBULL WANTS SPORT AND PEOPLE GIVE THE ONLY CHANCE TO MAKE SPORT BY FIGHTING.
    WRONG,WRONG,WRONG,WRONG,THE PITBULL WANTS TO RUN,RUN ON TREES,MAKE SPORT IN THE NATURE:.INSTEAD OF TRYING TO CONTROL THE PITBULL,
    SHOW,THAT'S YOUR BEST FRIEND:WHEN THE PITBULL KNOWS,BLAMING YOU AND THE DOG,THE PITBULL DON'T CARE ABOUT KIDS AND EVERYTHING,
    THE PITBULL IS THE BEST FRIEND AND STAYS COOL TO BE AND STAY YOUR BEST FRIEND: BELIEVE ME:EXPERIENCE: SPORT,NOT FIGHTING,OK?
