    Holy shit zinka is spectacular here! I've never been terribly drawn to her voice for reasons I cannot explain - perhaps because mister opera liked her so much - but she is truly magnificent.

      I really understand and agree with what you say about Milanov. I've never really cared much for her voice either. BUT, that being said I fully acknowledge she was an amazing artist, singer and musician! For me, I have to concede that it is ONLY a matter of personal preference for me, that I'm not really drawn much to her voice, and NOT because of ANY bad singing! (I would still much rather listen to Milanov than either Telbadi or Gencer at any time, as theirs was just poor singing so much of the time, and grossly over-rated. Milano was a truly great singer, that I'm just not partial to, so it's my own loss!)

      @georget.7348 Před 3 měsíci +2

      Correct, she recorded it a little later with von Karajan, a recording she and Simionato hated because they said that in order to get the perfect orchestra sound, he made the repeat certain passages again and again, the last take was orchestrally perfect but vocally a mess, they were exhausted. With all his fame, he knew nothing about voices, Ricciarelli was ruined by him.

    I don't care what you say...Gencer and Tebaldi is one of the greatest sopranos in the history of opera since I've seen their performances. Her stage presence were Stupendous. You are rude...judging one person by a very small documents of their whole career...like newspaper has done to Callas in 1958 Rome Norma. Btw Did you know her mother had passed away while she was preparing this performance?. Performances in Verona in 1966 were emotionally very tough for Gencer. Her mother was very ill and her brother called her to come to İstanbul. She couldn't as she could only get a day off for deaths. Her mother died during this period and she flew to İstanbul for her funeral. During the funeral her brother came and said "Stop with your crocodile tears. You were not here when mother needed you most." They didn't speak for years and after only one day Gencer flew back to Verona and dedicated her Aida to her late mother. MIND YOUR MANNERS.

    Callas in the Mexico performances of Aida was legendary! Not only was she at the zenith of her vocal powers but the cast was also INCREDIBLE ! I consider it to be the best all around casting that could keep up the prime Callas voice.

    You can see why Gencer was the "queen of the pirates" but never recorded anything, erratic singing and those little throaty sounds, I was never a fan. Callas had some amazing moments in her early years with Aida, no doubt, by the time she recorded it was past her prime. If I remember correctly her Aida from Rome, only the third act exists, has a fabulous high C and the London one is good too. Milanov was my girl, that whole recording is still the best ever of Aida, my favorite opera btw.
