Juilliard certainly helped her with her range and technique...her voice and ability is just from another world. Singers like her come along once in a lifetime. That's why they say be very careful trying to replicate a Mariah song. People think oh I can sing high or do really good runs, so I can sing Mariah. No darling, the intricacy and nuances and the way her voice moves and her fluidity and agility and that she can do runs in her whistle register and sing in her whistle register...It's all just too much. You better know what you're doing and you better be really good to even try and attempt to match her.
Best female singer of all time, I don't care what anyone says. Call her a diva or whatever, she's this she's that... the girl can sing.

This is possibly my favorite live version she does of this song.... She did do a version years before this at Saint Josephs Cathedral, but i can't find it anywhere...

Fun fact, mariah actually modeled a lot of her singing style after her godmother patti labelle, her tone and arrangements are different but when she performs and records she goes as hard as old school singers while also utilizing her very soft palate to add emotion and softness but uses her excellent control to change pitches and hit high notes that are unbelievable and adds so much soul, that's why she will always be a legend. In my opinion I also feel that because she arranged songs to be nearly impossible to cover. It caused her a lot of vocal stress as she aged she lips syncs her highnotes and lowered her key when she sings live personally, I'm grateful for all of mariahs songs and performances because she was one of the last singers that used thyre whole voice and the only singer can whistle in multiple octaves even to this day, and can make me cry at the drop of a hat. I see her as similar to patti labelle but instead of shock and awe performances she delivers smoother voice but oozes talent and soul that she literally created by herself

I think that when she belts and starts to going flat, she puts her hand on her ear(piece) and goes to the whistle so she can get in tune again, because next she needs to belt one more time (and also that's the original arrangement of her version)
What makes her great is not just her voice, but her musicality, the way she arranged a song is out of this world. So some new singers probably have the voice but not her musicality. Thats why she is the Greatest

Some of the things you refer to as struggling could very be be artistic choices. She uses many colors of her voice. Including those that wouldn’t be classical choices to her songs. The recording of this song has all those whistles in it…. So the whistle wasn’t to compensate for a hard time belting.

Amazing analysis and also Mariah is a legend and underrated genius who is I full control of her vocals, lyrica and musicianship. She has unique ear for her art and the entire backing vocalists and how everything should sound
I think when you talked about the "adjustments", she wasn't adjusting. I believe this arrangement was planned entirely. At this point of time, her vocals were superb.
The song was almost haunting and I don't remember the original giving me that, like that chill down to my bones.
She really just has such a unique sound that I really felt like I wasn't really ready for her. I am sure during the song some of you probably noticed that my mouth was hanging open and I had to remind myself to actually close my mouth so I don't look like a big dummy.
I am not really sure why shes not better known here in the US, because honestly, before people were telling me in the comments to listen to her, I had never even heard of her. But somethings telling me that's probably not going to be the case for too much longer because she has a lot of talent and she is super unique. I feel like that's going to take her really far. Thank you guys for recommending this. She was awesome.

Just my opinion but everything u said was a mistake was done purposely. She's played with notes, and breath control her whole career. She's the most successful background singer of all time lol. She's has a special gift where she can be the lead vocalist, and jump from any key on the scale, while jumping from blending with the instruments, and harmonizing with the choir all at the same time. While going from belts to whistles. Maybe all in one phrase. Her arrangement, and vocal skills is so slept on. I love your reactions.

I don't think the aspirate has anything to do with her nodules....she has always said she has to rest/sleep for eons before singing.....to do that breathy stuff, I believe, according to my experience , is MAJOR muscle holdback control,,,,if she has nodes,,,its on a certain part and with rest is minimized, I think...but I'm not a teacher like you!
She has a split vocal chord which makes the breathy sound effortless

I'm curious are you not acknowledging the fact that her high notes are pre recorded to avoid conflict or are you unable to tell, I see her move the mic away from her face but her volume stays the same and mid range and build up sounds labored and difficult as if her key was a bit too high or her vocal chords were needing rest but her high notes and runs are squeaky clean and sounded like a younger version of her, she lipsyncs most of her older songs and her songs from the 2000s started having lower keys and more basic mainstream arrangement so she could tour and not blow her vocals out when she toured, I always loved her hand movements, when she does runs and high notes, it displays her vocal control and the fact that her style of singing is literally impossible if you weren't born with it, she always has been a prodigy and if I could make a request if you could react to her singing if it's over or I will be there where she consistently performed at her highest level and proved that she could write arrange and perform a song in a way that No one ever heard before and since. Arianna grande is amazing I love her voice but she doesnt compare to mariah n.

I think knowing the technical terms are just one element of being a musician. She produces her harmonies, she makes supremely sophisticated musical choices when it comes to dynamics, articulation, voicing, riffs, arrangement, rhythm etc. If she makes music she's a musician. It's as simple as that.
Even if she didn't know the names of music terms in her masterclass, she still managed to produce and direct another singer (Brandi) and other musicians. She was the musician who made that song.
she is an Elite musician in how she uses her instrument; it would be like saying, how well someone plays the guitar would make them an elite musician; musicianship is not all about knowing technical terms or even knowing how to read sheet music however it is about how well the instrument is being played and, in this case, used - and not all singers use their voice as an instrument, some singers simply just sing but do not have the skills to use their voice like an instrument

Nowadays ppl put labels on certain singing styles and techniques that arent necessary for you to understand them. Mariah knows what she does when she sings, but she doesnt know how to explain it in a 'profesional' way bc thats not what she focuses on. She labels things in a way that works for her and in a way where she can explain to ppl who dont know much abt singing.
I think you are just jealous she’s mostly self taught and natural talent.
