- -- Footage taken by Tim Whitesell, Air Tactical Supervisor, and compiled by pilot Doug Burts, Alaska Division of Forestry --
This wildland fire footage was captured on August 16, 2013, on the southeast perimeter of the Tetlin Junction Ridge Fire (#414), burning east of Tok and Tetlin junctions, north of the Alaska Highway.
Fire behavior increased into the later part of the afternoon on August 16. At approximately 7:00 p.m., the Alaska Division of Forestry Aerial Supervision Module (consisting of Tim Whitesell and Doug Burts) reported the fire vortex to be about 3/4 of a mile wide; it lasted for about an hour. The extreme fire behavior uprooted trees, a scene that was captured by this footage- look for trees being blown around in the smoke column at the end of the clip.
Many long-term firefighters have witnessed rotating fire columns and are familiar with extreme fire behavior. As Tim Whitesell wrote, "a picture probably is worth a thousand words, but there are indeed times when a picture just doesn't do it [the trees being uprooted and blown around] justice. I've never seen anything like it until now."
The fire gained approximately 6,000 additional acres on August 16. No firefighters were on the ground near the fire, but Alaska Division of Forestry engines and firefighters were in place along the Alaska Highway (approximately 2 miles south of the fire). Safety of the public and safety of the firefighters remained a priority.
The fire was started by lightning on June 26, 2013. Current information about Alaska Division of Forestry fires is available at fire.ak.blm.gov.
They are not liking this video for what is happening, they are liking it as an appreciation to the user for recording this footage and sharing it with us.
After the Redding fire much more recently it seems people are much more aware of fire whirls and fire tornados.
Wow, thats crazy that the fire and smoke moves like that, almost like a fire tornado.
My heart races to see this from the air with you. Beautiful and horrifying. (I was taking GIF shots from the Tok Airport while you were flying this plume) A BIG THANKS to you and all the pilots and support personnel, all the boots on the ground, we owe you a debt that can never be repaid.
Its so sad to think about what happens to all of the animals in that forrest.
Ok..so what WAS that object in the sky? Was that a tree?? I know trees can "explode" during really hot fires but i've never heard of any forces that could make a whole tree fly through the sky. Any insight on this?
Great video..thankyou for posting!!
These are the most intense winds I've ever seen in any fire-wind driven video. When you realize the scale of what you are looking at, these winds are insane. Tim or Doug, was there any post fire investigation into the highest winds that were produced by this fire? I couldn't imagine being on the ground next to those pines(?) that were bent over 90 degrees and being uprooted with a massive flame front screaming across the surface at tornadic speeds. I've pretty much seen all the forest fire videos out there and this is one of the best if not the best.
Hhh
Never seen footage like this, fascinating
Very obviously some people have never seen a fire like this. Fighting it is about like trying to put out a well advanced house fire with a teaspoon full of water. Fires fires can also move really fast. Fastest I've personally seen was the Binta fire (it started near Binta Lake) in central BC several years ago. Travelled 17 km (11 miles) in one night. Good luck fighting that. Thanks for the great footage!
amazing how it generated the updraft and then the huge vortex..too bad they couldn't get a little closer in the clear intake to see the complete funnel...
I wonder how many people started assuming itwas the apocalypse lie in 2012. This is an intense fire but to be fair this stuff happens all of the time.
And what is man in the realm of such wonderment and an awesome display of Mother Nature? This film is terrifying at the primal gut level...
Wow, cant believe this went viral. There is a lot of continuous black spruce in Ak, which is fairly short, so a lot of fires turn into running crown fires that get out of control fast
We're did it happen?
Is this fire still burning?
A simple wind shift then pushes the rotating core of the firestorm back into the area it had just burned, and it all but goes out.
Geez Denise, I understand your thinking but what if it's just Nature's way of replenishing the landscape? It takes a wildfire now and then to keep things fresh. I was at the Yellowstone fire years ago and as tough to see the destruction it's even better now.
Could this be third documented fire tornado? Only two I know off are the Canberra, Australian 2003 and Carr fire tornado of 2018. Both had pyrocumulonimbus supercell thunderstorms from the resultant fire that spawned the true fire tornadoes. I highly suspect that this could be candidate No 3 having searched on the Internet there indeed was pyrocumulonimbus cloud activity perhaps related to this fire in 2013?
Wheres that??
Fire started in June? Holy wow!
Well said!
This fire has been going on for over a month? Holy shit. I've been a part of some big wild fires but they last about a week
The Incident Commander (IC) will meet with his senior staff and look at topo maps, fuel maps, the next 5 day weather forecasts, and values at risk, ie. towns, timber, improvements, etc. They will look for a place ahead of the fire where a fireline will tie in to something solid and figure out if they can cut fireline before the main fire gets there. If so, they'll send crews in to cut fireline and have a couple of crews light backfires along the new fireline.
Beautiful.
This is Pure Beauty.
Always gets me super stoked to see this. Miss slaying the Dragon.
yeah, its been picking up a lot recently.
Just wow!
In Alot of ways,... It is tragic. Poor trees and earthlings living there,...At least for now...(
Oh My God!!! I'm so sorry...
It is simply fabulous and awesome.
There’s nothing fabulous and awesome about a wildfire unless you’re an arsonist!
Freaking crazy! It actually was acting like a tornado! Scary stuff.
OK, should of watched it all!
At 2:00 is a Monster Fire Tornado/Tsunami/Pyroclastic Flow!
~
Wicked footage!
At 0:55 you can clearly see a spinning ring of fire.
At 1:17 and 1:43 there are trees flying around.
Damn that's a pretty intense fire.
Just looks like another day on earth to me...
Scary, yet beautiful... in a surreal sort of way.
Love the vortex at 2:00
so true
If lucky, this tactic will stop the fire by burning out fuel that would otherwise carry fire. At the point we see this fire, aircraft couldn't do anything but scout. There is too much turbulence for aircraft to be effective. It is actually more complicated than this but I hope I've been clear. Another thing to remember is that ultimately fires are put out by the hand crews on the line.
Well said. It is those hairy legged men & women of the labor crew trying to scrape up a cup full of dirt from near the top of some steep mountain side or other to throw at the flames. Time and again..
Actually all ground crews were pulled back as well due to the extreme fire behavior. You can’t fight this fire....have to wait for weather conditions to change. That vortex has whole trees in it.
When its this size you can either attack it by air at night when its not so intense, or you just have to wait till either the fuel comes to an end/ break, or weather puts it out. Thats about all you can do when its this big.
You can’t fight this fire, there are entire trees in that vortex.
That's nuts.
It's weird to think that this whole thing might have spawned from just a little tiny bush fire or something
Damn that's crazy
Geez. Problem!
well when ppl step in to try and put the fire out its mostly helicopters carrying huge bags of water that they dump on it and of course firefighters on the ground can spray the fire and sometimes huge trenches and dirt mounds are dug in the fires path to stop the spread
but if humans didn't step in it would just burn till it rained enough or till the fire runs out of a fuel source (trees)
Water wouldn’t have made a difference when a fire is exhibiting extreme fire behavior like this. You can’t fight this fire....only wait until weather conditions change. There are whole trees flying in that vortex.
It looks this thing is spinning off tornadoes.
Wow!!!!!!!
Damn nature, you scary!
Alaska used fire spin! It was super effective!
is this a preview for the sequel to Sharknado... Bearnado?
Good vid' just needs audio.
A fight with in the smoke
Wasn't thinkin a UFO..I was thinkin it looked like a whole tree, but then I realized it's hard to tell the distance. ;)
Mother of GOD!!!
Damn! That is one wild fire, natural deforestation is awesome crazy.
looks like a giant twister, They cant put it out?
how in the hell do you even start to fight a fire like this? I commend all the fire fighters in the air and on the ground fighting this monster.
You fight fire with fire. Sometimes firefighters create fire lines but I'm not to sure how to explain
No fire line in the world would have any effect on this. Absolutely nothing in this galaxy would do anything to this fire
Firestorm
are you serieus this is a huge fire thats not just 1 rain storm
The earth is on fire.
All the lumber
He's come back to destroy the World Tree!
wow we need to plant more tree's
Holy sh*t
Almost as good as sharknado
100years of fire fighting has left large amounts of forest untouched by fire. As dead wood accumulates the available fuel for a fire is increased. This abundant fuel, high winds and lack of moisture create the conditions for a fire storm that produces enough heat to creat it's own wind patterns and high enough temperatures that the fire will burn anything no mater what water or foam is dumped on it. If your going to blame anyone, start w/smoky the bear!
Oh Lord Jesus its a fire.... Tornado!!!!!
Is that... Ragnaros?
You don't most of the time you just evacuate and let it burn.
TOO SOON.
"Volcanic" fire behavior?
You had one job Josh...
I like yt very and very much.
Sure it wasn't started by the army like the one last month near fairbanks was.
How are you,,,?_?
So sad
I think prince zuko did that trying to fight azula
Where there's lighting there's a storm coming. I hope.
@MultiMicelle has been for weeks
dam I think this may have sharknado beat :/
1:18 and especially at 1:22
Looks as if trees are being spun in the air due to a fire tornado!
~
Hmm
Better finish watching
;)
Damn nature, you scary
fire tornado
GREAT AWESOME LET IT BURN FOREVER NICE WORK

There you go! Its only too late if someone dies, which hasn't happened....... yet.
I think I see Ragnaros creeping about BY FIRE BE PURGED!!!
Can someone tell me how fires like this are put out? Legit answers only please no rain dance bs.
